German interest in Iceland in the 1930s grew from nothing at all to proportions found by the British government to be alarming. The Third Reich's overtures began with friendly competition between German and Icelandic football teams. When war began, Denmark and Iceland declared neutrality and limited visits to the island by military vessels and aircraft of the belligerents.
Neutrality
During the Germanoccupation of Denmark, contact between the countries was disrupted. Initially, the Kingdom of Iceland declared itself to be neutral, and limited visits of belligerent warships and imposed a ban on belligerent aircraft within Icelandic territory.
Iceland (i/ˈaɪslænd/; Icelandic:Ísland[ˈistlant]), also called the Republic of Iceland, is a Nordicisland country between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. It has a population of 329,100 and an area of 103,000km2 (40,000sqmi), making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Iceland is volcanically and geologically active. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains and glaciers, while many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence still keeps summers chilly, with most of the archipelago having a tundra climate.
According to Landnámabók, the settlement of Iceland began in the year 874 when the Norwegian chieftain Ingólfr Arnarson became the first permanent settler on the island. In the following centuries, mainly Norwegians and to a smaller extent other Scandinavians settled Iceland, bringing with them thralls of Gaelic origin. From 1262 to 1814, Iceland was ruled by Norway and afterwards by Denmark. Until the 20th century, the country relied largely on fishing and agriculture. Iceland became independent in 1918 and a republic in 1944. Industrialisation of the fisheries and Marshall Plan aid following World War II brought prosperity and Iceland became one of the wealthiest and most developed nations in the world. In 1994, it became a part of the European Economic Area, which supported diversification into economic and financial services.
Iceland has extensive volcanic and geothermal activity. The rift associated with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which marks the division between the European and North Americantectonic plates, runs across Iceland from the southwest to the northeast. This geographic feature is prominent at the Þingvellir National Park, where the promontory creates an extraordinary natural amphitheatre. The site was the home of Iceland's parliament, the Alþing, which was first convened in 930. It is a common misconception that Þingvellir are located at the juncture between the North American and Eurasian continental plates. However, they are in fact at the juncture of the North American continental plate and a smaller plate (approx. 10,000 km2) called the Hreppar Microplate (Hreppaflekinn).
Iceland is an EP released by All About Eve in 2002. It was described mainly as a winter (rather than specifically Christmas) EP, although five out of seven of the songs do contain references to Christmas or are songs particularly connected with it.
This album was made (and the songs performed) by Julianne Regan and Andy Cousin only, and did not include Robin Guy or Toni Haimi, the other band members at the time.

WW2 Forgotten Fronts: Britain's Invasion of Iceland
Operation Fork in May 1940 was Britain's "top secret" plan to invade and occupy the island of Iceland to prevent it from falling into German hands. It was a very minor operation, but somewhat comedic nonetheless!

The first written report of settlement of Iceland was from the Norwegians during the mid 9th century,. Some Sagas do make mention of Papars that had met the Norwegians as they landed and these were reported to have lived on the land since the mid 8th century. Papars were a group of Irish or Scottish monks referred to as the “Holy men of the north” by other Gaelic peoples. Some other sources claim these people to be monks from the Hiberno-Scottish missions however, little archeological evidence exists for either of these claims. Some cabins have been found in the Southern sections of the island that would collateral with these times but many agree that they were used as outposts only. Iceland was a commonwealth and a vassal under the Norwegian crown from the 10th century until the 13th and it was pretty much completely autonomous for most of it's existence when it came under union with the Norwegian crown.
Iceland had been under the control of two main powers during it's settled existence. Norway had control of the island for years while still a sovereign nation, When Norway was listed as a Danish Province in 1536 then the lands that were under Norwegian control were shifted to Danish control. Once Sweden gained Norway in the Treaty of Kiel in 1814, the previous Norwegian possessions were kept under Danish control. Iceland was given home rule in the 1860's and in 1918 Iceland was given independence from Denmark but was kept under personal union with the King of Denmark. On 9 April 1940, German forces launched Operation Weserübung, invading both Norway and Denmark. Denmark was subdued within a day and occupied. On the same day, the British government sent a message to the Icelandic government (as they were a personal union at this time), stating that Britain was willing to assist Iceland in maintaining her independence but would require facilities in Iceland to do so. Iceland was invited to join Britain in the war as a belligerent and an ally. The Icelandic government rejected the offer opting to stay neutral. kidtrjkpdtkptgftgf9349054890

In this video I take a look at the unique experience of Iceland during the Second World War/World War 2, its initial neutrality as part of Denmark until the German Invasion of Denmark in 1940, through the Battle of the Atlantic and British Occupation of the island and its subsequent relations with the Allied Powers throughout the remainder of the conflict.
Why did the British Invade the Faroe Islands in 1940?

People often talk about D-Day, France, and the Eastern front of the Second World War, but people often forget about some other smaller - yet no less important - theaters of conflict. In this episode, we discuss the occupation of Iceland.
