"I Wonder Why" is a doo-wopsong, written by Melvin Fair (lyrics) and Ricardo Weeks, and first recorded by Dion and the Belmonts (released as Laurie Records' first single, number 3013), becoming the group's first national pop chart hit, in 1958. It is sung from the point of view of a man telling his girlfriend that he loves her but does not know why. The song is noted for Carlo Mastrangelo singing the bass part in rhythm. The song was used in the film A Bronx Tale, in the pilot episode of the television series The Sopranos, and in John Carpenter's film adaption of Stephen King's "Christine". A cover was sung by Nicolas Cage in Peggy Sue Got Married. A cover was also sung by Showaddywaddy in 1977, reaching number 2 in the UK Single Chart.
John Edward Rogers (8 February 1858 – 8 July 1935) was an Australian cricketer who played two first-class matches for Victoria during the early 1890s. Rogers was born in Sydney, New South Wales, though little else is known of his early life, including how and when he came to reside in the neighbouring colony of Victoria. A right-arm fast bowler, he made his first-class debut against Tasmania in March 1891, at the end of the 1890–91 season. He took a single wicket in a low-scoring affair, with John Carlton (5/26 and 7/53) and Norman Rock (5/21) dominating for Victoria and Tasmania, respectively. Rogers' second and final match for Victoria came at the beginning of the following season, against South Australia at the Adelaide Oval. He took 2/96 in South Australia's only innings, in a match notable for George Giffen's all-round dominance—Giffen scored 271 runs out of a total of 562 all out, and then took 16 wickets (9/96 and 7/70) to allow South Australia to win by an innings and 164 runs. Rogers played no further matches at a high level, and died in Melbourne in July 1935, aged 77.
Rogers was born to Irish immigrant parents in Philadelphia on May 27, 1844. He earned his law degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and was admitted to the bar in 1865. Rogers was elected the city comptroller in 1880. As a member of the City Troop/(First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry), he participated in the quelling of the Pittsburgh riots during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877. Rogers was later appointed Judge Advocate General of the Philadelphia National Guard, with the rank of colonel.
A prominent attorney and politician in Philadelphia, Rogers came to the baseball business when former player and sporting goods magnate Al Reach consulted with him on a patent for a baseball. Rogers and Reach later teamed up to acquire the remnants of the Worcester Worcesters in 1883, winning the rights to the franchise via drawing of lots. Reach and Rogers relocated the franchise to Philadelphia, where they became known as the Quakers (they would later become the Phillies), entering the team as an expansion franchise in the National League in 1883. During these early days, Rogers was involved in creating baseball's reserve clause, which would remain in effect until the era of free agency. In 1899, Reach sold his interest to Rogers due to repeated disagreements about the direction of the club.
