ITV West Country, formerly known as ITV Westcountry and ITV West was (until 31 December 2013) a non-franchise ITV regional station covering South West England and incorporating the ITV West ('East') and ITV Westcountry regions. With the formal split of the Wales and West Channel 3 licence in January 2014, a separate licence was created for Wales with the West licence merged with that of West Country. ITV West Country thus became a franchise region. Each company that makes up the new region still legally exists. ITV Wales & West Ltd, ITV Wales & West Group Ltd and Westcountry Television Ltd are each, along with most other regional companies owned by ITV plc, listed on www.companieshouse.gov.uk as a "Dormant company".
History
ITV West Country launched on 16 February 2009 (as ITV West & Westcountry), and merged the two regions of ITV West and ITV Westcountry into one amalgamated region. The idea was first proposed following a speech by Michael Grade about regional broadcasting post-switchover at the 2007 Nations and Regions conference in Cardiff. There was speculation that ITV West and ITV Westcountry could merge operations, as part of further streamlining of regional operations, and rumours suggested that, while a newsroom (and separate regional identity) would be retained in the south west, the main Westcountry Live programme would move to a studio alongside The West Tonight at ITV West in Bristol.
ITV West Country, formerly known as Westcountry Television and Carlton Westcountry, is the ITV franchise holder for the South West of England, covering Cornwall, Devon, Isles of Scilly, southern and western Somerset and western Dorset. The company replaced its predecessor, TSW (Television South West), from the 1 January 1993. The station is owned and operated by ITV plc under the licensee of ITV Broadcasting Limited (formerly Westcountry Television Limited).
ITV West Country incorporating the former ITV Westcountry and ITV West ('East') regions was (until 31 December 2013) a non-franchise ITV regional station covering South West England. This article however, covers the Westcountry Television part of the franchise.
ITV Wales and West, previously known as HTV, refers to the Independent Television franchise area until 31 December 2013, licensed to a broadcaster by the regulator Ofcom.
There is no channel, past or present, named "ITV Wales and West". The licence relates to a 'dual region', meaning that the franchise area was divided into two regions, each of which must be served by distinct and separate ITV programme services as more fully defined within the licence. Today, those services are known as ITV Cymru Wales and ITV West Country(since ITV West and ITV Westcountry merged into a single region). They are provided by ITV plc which owns and operates the two services through its subsidiary ITV Broadcasting Ltd.
From January 2014, the dual-region licence was split in two, with ITV Cymru Wales for Wales and ITV West Country covering the West of England. Both licences remain held by ITV Broadcasting Ltd and the legal names of the former HTV companies have not yet been changed again.
The West Country is a loosely defined area of south western England, often regarded as encompassing the historic counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, and the City and County of Bristol, while the counties of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, and the Isles of Scilly, are also often included. Some usages of the term include wider areas, while others are more specific, though with little consistency of definition.
Geography
The West Country is mostly rural, with only a few sizeable towns and cities. Tourism and agriculture, especially dairy farming, play a significant role in the economy. The landscape is principally granite moorland in the west, and chalk and limestone downland and clay vales in the east. Historically, tin mining and the fishery were sources of income and employment in the west of the area, but less so today, although the latter still contributes to the economy. The region is traditionally famous for its production of cider, clotted cream, and pasties, and in modern times has also become well-known for the Glastonbury Festival and other attractions.
Terrible news for all Westcountry viewers. The end of ITV Westcountry. On February 13, 2009, after 14 years, ITV Westcountry will be gone forever.
This was the sad update on ITV Westcountry from September 25th of 2008, and this is from TV-Ark. There's always the BBC, you know, so to heck with ITV plc!

The West Country Tonight power cut
A power cut knocks The West Country Tonight off-air. With none of the technical equipment working, the presenters Vanessa Cuddeford and Bob Cruwys read several stand-by items and have a studio chat with reporter Bob Constantine. With 15 minutes of the programme remaining they have no stand-bys left and the gallery equipment is still not working, so they are forced to hand over to Meridian Tonight.
Ironically, one of the straps in the opening headlines reads 'POWER OFF' :-)
If you don't want to watch the whole clip, the power cut occurs at 06:28.
