Indian Navy Sindhughosh kilo class submarines documentary 1/2
Sindhughosh class submarines are Indian variants of the Kilo class diesel-electric submarines in active service with the Indian Navy. Their names are in Sanskrit, but in their Roman-alphabet forms sometimes a final short -a is dropped.
The Kilo class is the NATO reporting name for a naval diesel-electric submarine that is made in Russia. The original version of the vessels were designated Project 877 Paltus (Turbot) in Russia. There is also a more advanced version, designated as Improved Kilo in the west, and Project 636 Varshavyanka in Russia. The Kilo will be succeeded by the Lada class submarine, which began sea trials in 2005.
The boats are mainly intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine operations in relatively shallow waters. Original Project 877 boats are equipped with Rubiko...

Original Project 877 boats are equipped with Rubikon MGK-400 sonar system (with NATO reporting name Shark Gill), which includes a mine detection and avoidance sonar MG-519 Arfa (with NATO reporting name Mouse Roar). Newer Project 636 boats are equipped with improved MGK-400EM, with MG-519 Afra also upgraded to MG-519EM. The improved sonar systems have reduced the number of operators needed by sharing the same console via automation.
Anechoic tiles are fitted on casings and fins to absorb the sonar sound waves of active sonar, which results in a reduction and distortion of the return signal. These tiles also help attenuate sounds that are emitted from the submarine, thus reducing the range by which the sub may be detected by passive sonar
The Sindhughosh submarines, designated 877EKM, were designed as part of Project 877, and built under a contract between Rosvooruzhenie and the Ministry of Defence (India).
The submarines have a displacement of 3,000 tonnes, a maximum diving depth of 300 meters, top speed of 18 knots, and are able to operate solo for 45 days with a crew of 53. The final unit was the first to be equipped with the 3M-54 Klub (SS-N-27) antiship cruise missiles with a range of 220 km.
INS Sindhughosh (S55) is the lead ship of her class of diesel-electric submarines of the Indian Navy.
The submarine was commissioned in April 1986 in Riga, Latvia. This submarine is diesel-powered and has totally six motors. INS Sindhughosh was the first submarine in Indian Navy to be equipped with the Klub ZM-54E SS-N-27 antiship cruise missiles with a range of 220 km. The submarine has a displacement of nearly 3,100 tons when dived, a maximum diving depth of 300 meters, speed of up to 17 knots (31 km/h), and are able to operate solo for 45 days with a crew of 52.

Indian Navy’s kilo Class Submarines and its challenges
Indian navy is currently operating 17 submarines which includes 1Arihant class SSBN, 4 Type 209 class, 8 Kilo class& 4 Scorpene class diesel attack submarine. The submarine which we are going to discuss today is the Kilo class submarine which is also know as Sindhughosh class submarine. These submarines are designed in Soviet era and first entered into service with Russian Navy in 1980. Indian navy commissioned the first vessel of this class in 1986, which almost 35 years from ago. The latest submarine of this class was commissioned by Indian Navy in the year 2000, 22 years from ago. These submarines are quite old, however all of them have undergone midlife refitment and one was decommissioned and another one given to Myanmar Navy in March 2020. While the construction of latest conventional diesel attack submarines under Project 75I is yet to kick off, Indian navy is looking to further upgrade the Kilo class submarines.
Upgrade 1: Lithium-ion battery
The first upgrade is related to the Lithium-ion battery. This upgrade is going to be game changer for a submarine, and navy won’t even need AIP if it has Lithium-ion battery. At present Japan is the only country have an operational submarine powered by Lithium ion and South Korea has also developed this technology and working on operationalizing them. Back in 2020, navy has released an RFI for indigenous development of 500Kwh Lithium ion battery for submarines which can also be scaled upto 5MWh. Navy is planning to replace the traditional Lead Acid batteries with this Lithium ion battery. As per the latest update Indian Navy has selected the vendor for the development of the Lithium-ion battery. It might 20 more months as per the RFI to get the working Lithium-ion in place. This is definitely good news as this will be first fitted in the Kilo class submarines and later can be retro-fitted with the Kalvari class submarine.
Upgrade 2: Fire Warning System
The second upgrade is related to Fire Warning System. The Project is for installation, commissioning, trials and maintenance of Fire Warning System onboard seven (07) Sindhughosh Class submarines. The submarine consists of six water tight compartments and two Battery pits. The compartment composition consists of Living spaces, Galley, Machinery spaces (Engine Room, Motor Room, Ammunition deck, Shafting Space). The Fire Warning will provide different sensors example, smoke sensor, temperature sensor, hot spot detection sensor, flash detector etc. The system's cabling will require to pass through compartments that are water tight and bifurcated using Bulkheads. The compartments are air pressure tested to 10 Kg/cm². The FWS will function under marine environment and higher atmospheric pressures.
Overall these two upgrades are aimed to improve the safety standards and endurance of the Kilo class submarines drastically.

Today we will talk about the Indian navy submarine fleet and will understand the Indian Navy in 2035 and 2040.
Indian Navy currently operates 4 Shishumar class or Type 209 class submarine, 7 Sindhughosh class or Kilo-class submarine, 4 Kalvari class or Scorpène-class submarine, and 2 Arihant-class submarines.
Indian Navy currently working on P75i diesel-powered attack submarine, P75Alpha nuclear-powered attack submarine, P76 indigenous diesel-powered attack submarine, and S5 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine.
Commissioning of P-75I class, P-76 class, and S5 class submarines will be completed by 2035. In 2035 Indian Navy will operate 6 Kalvari class or Scorpène-class sub-marines, 6 P-75I class, 6 P-76 class, 3 P75 Alpha, 4 Arihant-class, and 3 S5 class submarines.
Indian Navy requirement is 18 SSK and 6 SSN, these number predictions were done in the early 2000 century. After China increases its presence in the Indian ocean Indian Navy might change its requirement. If the Indian Navy acquired additional P76 class or P75 Alpha class submarine then the contract will be signed with the two shipyards to achieve a faster production rate.
In 2040 Indian Navy will have 4 options. Option 1, the Indian Navy may go with 24 submarine fleet. In 2040 Indian Navy will have 18 SSK, 6 SSN, and 10 SSBN.
Option 2, the Indian Navy may go with 3 additional P76 class and P75 Alpha class submarines. In 2040 Indian Navy will have 21 SSK, 9 SSN, and 10 SSBN.
Option 3, the Indian Navy may go with 6 additional P76 submarines. In 2040 Indian Navy will have 24 SSK, 6 SSN, and 10 SSBN.
Option 4, the Indian Navy may go with 6 additional P75 Alpha class submarines. In 2040 Indian Navy will have 18 SSK, 12 SSN, and 10 SSBN. In my opinion, the Indian Navy should go with Option 4.
