POWER was an IBMoperating system enhancement package that provided spooling facilities for the IBM System/360 running DOS/360 or retrofitted with modified DOS/360. Upgrades, POWER/VS and POWER/VSE were available for and the IBM System/370 running DOS/VS and DOS/VSE respectively. POWER is an acronym for Priority Output Writers, Execution processors and input Readers.
The product
POWER was an operating system enhancement available for DOS/360, DOS/VS, and DOS/VSE, and came packaged with some third party DOS-based operating systems. International Business Machines released POWER in 1969 following a public introduction at the IBM Wall Street Data Center.
It 'spooled' (queued) printer and card data, freeing programs from being dependent upon the speed of printers or punched card equipment.
POWER competed with non-IBM products, namely DataCorp's The Spooler and SDI's GRASP. Unlike the other products, POWER required a dedicated partition.
It allowed a single printer (1403/2311), punch (2520, 2540) or reader (2540, 2501) to be shared by two or more processing partitions. Input data was asynchronously loaded and directed to the proper partition by Job class. Output was directed to disk and stored there - then directed to a printer or punch by the writer type, (PRT, PUN), Job Class, Priority and form code. This was provided in PRT and PUN control cards in the input stream. Once the operator put the proper form in the printer/punch and told power to start (G PUN or G PRT on the console) the device would continue until no more output of that type was available. When a new form was encountered it would alert the operator to change forms and wait for the next go command.
Instruction set architecture is distinguished from the microarchitecture, which is the set of processor design techniques used to implement the instruction set. Computers with different microarchitectures can share a common instruction set. For example, the IntelPentium and the AMDAthlon implement nearly identical versions of the x86 instruction set, but have radically different internal designs.
The concept of an architecture, distinct from the design of a specific machine, was developed by Fred Brooks at IBM during the design phase of System/360.
Some virtual machines that support bytecode as their ISA such as Smalltalk, the Java virtual machine, and Microsoft's Common Language Runtime, implement this by translating the bytecode for commonly used code paths into native machine code. In addition, these virtual machines execute less frequently used code paths by interpretation (see: Just-in-time compilation). Transmeta implemented the x86 instruction set atop VLIW processors in this fashion.
The ISA is used as base for high end microprocessors from IBM during the 1990s and were used in many of IBM's servers, minicomputers, workstations, and supercomputers. These processors are called POWER1 (RIOS-1, RIOS.9, RSC, RAD6000) and POWER2 (POWER2, POWER2+ and P2SC).
The ISA evolved into the PowerPC instruction set architecture and was deprecated in 1998 when IBM introduced the POWER3 processor that was mainly a 32/64 bit PowerPC processor but included the POWER ISA for backwards compatibility. The POWER ISA wasn't developed any further after that and wasn't used in any processors after that.
Introducing IBM Power Systems for Google Cloud (Cloud Next '19)
Large enterprises face many challenges when considering a public cloud solution as part of their hybrid cloud strategy. The lack of current on-prem infrastructure elements and related workload stacks in a public cloud can present a significant barrier to optimal exploitation of public cloud capabilities. Solutions that combine existing on-prem elements and public cloud resources can bridge the gap, however network latency, data transfer costs, and security can be challenges when resources are split between on and off prem. IBM and Google have partnered to enable Power-based Enterprise compute as a service for Google Cloud with high speed connectivity and direct integration into GCP project resources. This video is for serious Power Techies only. If you are not a serious Power Techie, please watch the other two YouTube Videos on the E1080 from me (Nigel Griffiths), which are both 14 minutes long.
Nigel shows you a Early Ship Program machine. ESP machines are for testing before IBM ships the servers out from the Generally Available (GA) date).
The Power10 Enterprise E1080 is installed and dismantled to take a 100 pictures showing you all the main parts. You will see many things that most computer people never get to see - even if you have many of these large servers in their computer room. Only the service engineers get to see these details.
I hope this demystifies the technology and explains may of the terms. This should help is you are architecting or designing solutions, configuring a E1080 or installing it.
It also includes HMC details and cabling up a four CEC Node machine.
Note: This is an Early Ship Program E1080 - a GA E1080 will be slightly different.
For example:
1) Missing - safe and other labels on the top of the server and inside.
2) Missing - servers did not include a front cover panel.
3) Different - The GA servers has up to four NVMe SSD drives at the back (this E1080 had 2 wider devices)
4) Missing - rack rails.

What Is Instruction Set Architecture ?
Instruction Set Architecture Explained With Example.
Definition Of Instruction Set Architecture ( ISA ) Explained.
https://www.learncomputerscienceonline.com/instruction-set-architecture/
The instruction set architecture, abbreviated as ISA and it is a part of the processor architecture.
The instruction set architecture basically works as an interface between the hardware and the software.
In simple words, the instruction set architecture is defined as the entire group of commands that the processor can perform to execute the program instructions.
Every processor design is based on one specific instruction set architecture.
The instruction set architecture, only defines, the operational capacity of the processor, in terms of set of commands th...

Design Your Own CPU Instruction Set
As part of my series about how a CPU works, it is time to try to design our own CPU instruction set. Starting from a blank sheet of paper, how would you design a new Instruction Set Architecture (ISA)? In this tutorial I design the first stages of a 16-bit CPU ISA.

Today we’re going to take our first baby steps from hardware into software! Using that CPU we built last episode we’re going to run some instructions and walk you through how a program operates on the machine level. We'll show you how different programs can be used to perform different tasks, and how software can unlock new capabilities that aren't built into the hardware. This episode, like the last is pretty complicated, but don’t worry - as we move forward into programming the idea of opcodes, addresses, and registers at this machine level will be abstracted away like many of the concepts in this series.

The instruction set architecture, only defines, the operational capacity of the processor, in terms of set of commands that the processor can decode and execute.
The processor architecture at the hardware level is also referred to as micro architecture. The term micro architecture is defined as the actual hardware implementation of the instruction set architecture.

This offer allows Power customers to exercise use cases and run Power based workloads closely integrated with Google Cloud services to create new solutions for their end customers and take advantage of cloud economics.

Note: I have retired from IBM but I am still interesting is supporting and helping nmon and njmon users. Please use [email protected] from now on.
It’s likely you have heard of IBM Power Systems, but if you are just getting started in data organization or are deploying the very first AI-based application in your company, there are some things you should know.

IBM Power Systems Power10 server with a HMC R10 software being used to create a virtual machine with CPU, RAM, network, storage and virtual DVD and then installing AIX 7.3.
This video is 18 minutes due to explaining what is happening.
But in practice it takes only 5 minutes plus a 10 minute gap in the middle to allow the AIX packages to install = just long enough for a cup of English breakfast tea and 2 donuts.

The instruction set architecture, only defines, the operational capacity of the processor, in terms of set of commands that the processor can decode and execute.
The processor architecture at the hardware level is also referred to as micro architecture. The term micro architecture is defined as the actual hardware implementation of the instruction set architecture.
