Hypomania (literally “under mania” or "less than mania") is a mood state characterized by persistent disinhibition and pervasive elevated (euphoric) with or without irritable mood but generally less severe than full mania. Characteristic behaviors are extremely energetic, talkative, and confident commonly exhibited with a flight of creative ideas. While hypomanic behavior often generates productivity and excitement, it can become troublesome if the subject engages in risky or otherwise inadvisable behaviors.
Presentation
Individuals in a hypomanic state have a decreased need for sleep, are extremely outgoing and competitive, have a great deal of energy and are otherwise often fully functioning (unlike full mania).
Distinctive markers
Specifically, hypomania is distinguished from mania by the absence of psychotic symptoms and grandiosity, and by its lesser degree of impact on functioning.
Hypomania is a feature of bipolar II disorder and cyclothymia, but can also occur in schizoaffective disorder. Hypomania is also a feature of bipolar I disorder as it arises in sequential procession as the mood disorder fluctuates between normal mood and mania. Some individuals with bipolar I disorder have hypomanic as well as manic episodes. Hypomania can also occur when moods progress downwards from a manic mood state to a normal mood. Hypomania is sometimes credited with increasing creativity and productive energy.
So, I’m in Hypomania | Hypomanic Episode Caught on Camera
As of this video going up, I’m in Washington DC at Katsucon, an anime convention that I go to every year or so. In the past, I usually get a teeny mood/bipolar episode/cycle and while I don’t normally realize it’s happening (weird I know, but bipolar symptoms are weird) I did this time. So the hypomania hit and I filmed a vlog for you guys where I talk about what I'm going through.
I describe what it’s like, and you can see firsthand what my brain is like when it’s hypomanic and what I am like when I’m feeling this way. Keep in mind this is not mania, it’s hypomania, which is a less intense form of mania that doesn’t last as long and doesn’t ruin my life.
And all of this is manageable. This does not mean my meds aren’t working. This does not mean I need different treatment. It is a myth...

Am I Hypomanic or Happy?
Am I hypomanic or happy? For those of us with bipolar 2 disorder, we often ask ourselves that question.
So what is the difference between hypomania and feeling happy? Recently, when I searched for the symptoms of hypomania, I came across descriptions that consisted of phrases such as, "too happy" or "too excited." These characteristics could describe anybody with or without bipolar depression and are not clues to abnormal behavior.
There is a significant difference between hypomania and being happy. In this video, I share my experience with impulsive behavior and not punishing myself for being enthusiastic about life. (This is a follow-up video to "Hypomanic Hannah: What Does Hypomania Feel Like?" https://youtu.be/gLa5-9XGQqM.)

And all of this is manageable. This does not mean my meds aren’t working. This does not mean I need different treatment. It is a myth that everyone who takes psych meds experiences a 100% reduction in symptoms. It might work for some, but not for me.
But back to the bigger picture: I know the risks of doing these cons means there is a big chance I’ll have a mini episode before, during, and after. My life with schizoaffective bipolar is that I experience ups and downs and I have to deal with them when they happen. Sure I could stay home and not have an episode, but I’m not going to quit doing cool things just because there’s a chance I get a--totally manageable--manic-depressive mini episode. So please, respect that. Everyone’s mental illness is their own and it is up to them how they treat it and deal with it.
This is mine. Thanks for your understanding.
