Forests play an enormous role throughout the invented history of Tolkien's Middle-earth and are inevitably an important episode on the heroic quests of his characters. The forest device is used as a mysterious transition from one part of the story to another.
Middle-earth narrative
Overview
The Old Forest lay near the centre of the Middle-earth region of Eriador. It was one of the few survivors of the primordial forests which had covered much of Eriador before the Second Age. Indeed, it had once been but the northern edge of one immense forest which reached all the way to Fangorn forest, hundreds of miles to the south-east.
The vicinity of the Old Forest was the domain of two nature-spirits: Tom Bombadil and Old Man Willow. The powers of these beings doubtless contributed to its survival when other forests were destroyed. The house of Tom Bombadil was located beside the eastern eaves of the forest, near where the Withywindle stream flowed over a waterfall into the woods. Old Man Willow stood in the centre of the forest, on the Withywindle's meandering banks.

Old-Growth Forests vs. Second-Growth Plantations
Old-Growth Forests versus Second-Growth Plantations: The Differences
"Trees grow back! As long as we replant the trees, why shouldn't we cut down the old-growth forests?"
This is a common contention, which is addressed in this latest video by filmmaker Darryl Augustine about some of the key differences between BC's old-growth forests and the ensuing second-growth tree plantations that they're being replaced with. Our old-growth forests - centuries or millennia-old - have far greater structural complexity than second-growth plantations, which are re-logged every 50-60 years, never to become old-growth again. Hence, old-growth logging under BC's forestry system is a non-renewable activity akin to fossil fuel extraction.

The distinctive features of old-growth forests (well-developed understories, multi-layered canopies, large amounts of woody debris, lots of canopy epiphytes of hanging mosses, ferns, lichens, etc.) support unique and endangered species that can't survive in second-growth plantations (spotted owls, mountain caribou, marbled murrelets, etc.); store twice the amount of accumulated carbon per hectare than ensuing second-growth plantations; are vital pillars of BC's multi-billion dollar tourism industry (tourists are not coming to see clearcuts and tree plantations!); conserve and filter clean drinking water for human communities and wild salmon; and are vital parts of many First Nations cultures: ancient cedars are used for carving canoes, totem poles, masks, etc. and old-growth ecosystems are used for food and medicines.

Extending nearly 1.2 million square miles across Belarus and Poland, the 7,000 year old Białowieża Forest is home to more than 12,000 distinct species of plants and animals. Comprising the largest, and one of the last holdouts of, primeval forest in Europe, the Białowieża has been designated a World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations.

IN TIMES FORGOTTEN, THE DEVIL CAME TO VIEW THE SUSSEX WEALD HE FOUND THAT CHUCHES HAD BEEN BUILT BEHIND THE OCEAN SHEILD. THE DEVIL, ANGERED AT THIS WORK, DID FORM A MIGHTY PLAN ; TO FLOOD THE QUIET VILLAGES AND KILL ALL CHRISTIAN MAN. THE BELLS PEALED, THE WITCHES BURNED BUT THE DEVIL DIDNT STRIKE. ONE DAY HE'LL RETURN TO COMPLETE THE MIGHTY DEVIL'S DYKE. THE DEVIL HE BEGAN TO DIG, A PATH UNTO THE SEA. BUT TOO LONG DID HE TARRY THERE, AT FIRST LIGHT, HAD TO FLEE. NEVER RETURNING TO HIS WORK, THE CHURCHES STAND IN PLACE. A MIGHTY CREVICE HE DID LEAVE, TO WARN OF OUR DISGRACE. THE BELLS PEALED, THE WITCHES BURNED BUT THE DEVIL DIDNT STRIKE. ONE DAY HE'LL RETURN TO COMPLETE
