Consider Supporting HoH: https://www.patreon.com/HouseofHistory During the closing decade of the 19th century, elements of old and new existed side by side in China. The years after the Sino-Japanese war saw a reform movement that emphasized the need to use Western learning for practical developments while Chinese learning was to remain the essence. The Guanxu Emperor was eventually convinced to issue radical reforms - much to the dismay of arch conservatives. These conservatives, among whom the Empress Dowager Cixi, immediately started planning ways to obstruct the emperor… even ways to get rid of him.

Hundred Days Reform 1898
The Hundred Days' Reform was a failed 103-day national, cultural, political, and educational reform movement that occurred from 11 June to 22 September 1898 in late Qing dynasty China. It was undertaken by the young Guangxu Emperor and his reform-minded supporters. Following the issuing of the reformative edicts, a coup d'état ("The Coup of 1898", Wuxu Coup) was perpetrated by powerful conservative opponents led by Empress Dowager Cixi.

Town Hall: Labor Shortages, Border Crisis, & Immigration Reform
Feb. 27, 2024
Across the nation, nearly 10 million jobs remain unfilled. Hundred Days Reform

Across the nation, nearly 10 million jobs remain unfilled. Without action by policy and business leaders to address the labor shortage crisis in the U.S., these gaps will continue to hinder the nation’s growth, productivity, and innovation. In concert with the ongoing border crisis, demand for comprehensive immigration reform increases.
Civil Dialogues, a joint initiative between the George & Barbara Bush Foundation, the LBJ Foundation, and the Clinton Presidential Center aims to facilitate dialogue on important issues facing our country today. At the launch of this initiative, we presented a town hall discussion with a panel of experts who explored the complex topic of immigration from multiple perspectives, focusing on labor shortages, the border crisis, and potential solutions. Conceived by Jean Becker, former chief of staff to President George H. W. Bush, and Linda Lorelle, business owner and former KPRC-TV news anchor, each Civil Dialogues town hall is a safe space for community conversations. Each attendee should have walked away with a better understanding of the topic’s nuances while feeling seen, heard, and empowered to continue dialogue.
