Why does the U.S. Military still use the HMMWV 'Humvee' vehicle?
The United States military and many others around the world have extensively used the HMMWV or 'Humvee' for many years. It has been a staple of Cold War era type equipment and has been placed in many different enviroments, operational deployments and conflicts throughout its history.
With newer vehicles coming in to replace it, why do we keep seeing more and more Humvee's still in service and actuvely being upgraded? The vehicle does have some darker moments in its career but the vehicle still performs its duty well as it can for what it was originally designed for.
Let's take a look at the vehicle, its history and it's future.

How The U.S. Military Plans To Replace The Iconic Humvee On Future Frontlines
The U.S. military has a new ride.
Its old workhorse, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle — more commonly known as the Humvee— is showing its age. The Humvee was originally designed to ferry troops around the battlefield in Europe against the Soviet Union. But during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Humvee was pushed to the sidelines in favor of vehicles that could better survive roadside bombs.
The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV, has now taken on the mantle of being the new frontline tactical vehicle favored by the U.S. military.
“The JLTV family of vehicles was designed to restore payload and performance capabilities that were traded from previous light tactical vehicles for added protection in recent conflicts — giving commanders an improved protected mobility ...

But beginning in 2004, the vehicle that was designed for the European battlefield began to struggle when it faced a determined Iraqi insurgency that fought with improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. Soon, images of burnt-out, twisted Humvees became a symbol of America's struggle to cope with a new, horrific type of warfare.
The military eventually replaced many Humvees with heavy-duty vehicles called MRAPs, designed specifically to withstand roadside bombs. But they were slow, top-heavy and had limited capability off-road.
While many short-term efforts to protect troops were launched, the Pentagon was determined to develop a lasting solution. It first approved the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle ( JLTV ) as a program of record in 2006.
It took almost a decade for the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle ( JLTV ) to become a reality but, in August 2015, Oshkosh Corp. was selected over Lockheed Martin Corp. and AM General LLC to build the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle ( JLTV ) for the Army and the Marine Corps, a program that could exceed $30 billion to meet the current joint-service requirement.

Afghanistan, the Humvee was pushed to the sidelines in favor of vehicles that could better survive roadside bombs.
The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV, has now taken on the mantle of being the new frontline tactical vehicle favored by the U.S. military.
“The JLTV family of vehicles was designed to restore payload and performance capabilities that were traded from previous light tactical vehicles for added protection in recent conflicts — giving commanders an improved protected mobility solution and the first vehicle purpose-built for modern battlefield networks,” Michael Sprang, the program manager for the JLTV program at the U.S. Army, wrote in an email to CNBC.
The vehicle is manufactured by Oshkosh Defense.
“The JLTV combines the protection of the MRAP, which was so critical in Iraq and Afghanistan, with the agility of a Humvee,” Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wisc., said in an interview with CNBC. “I’ve driven it. With the suspension system, you could be drinking a cup of coffee, going over massive bumps and not spill. It’s a critical modernization priority both for the Army and the Marine Corps.”

How The U.S. Military Plans To Replace The Iconic Humvee On Future Frontlines
https://wn.com/How_The_U.S._Military_Plans_To_Replace_The_Iconic_Humvee_On_Future_Frontlines
The U.S. military has a new ride.
Its old workhorse, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle — more commonly known as the Humvee— is showing its age. The Humvee was originally designed to ferry troops around the battlefield in Europe against the Soviet Union. But during the wars in Iraq and
Afghanistan, the Humvee was pushed to the sidelines in favor of vehicles that could better survive roadside bombs.
The Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, or JLTV, has now taken on the mantle of being the new frontline tactical vehicle favored by the U.S. military.

Big special thanks to Sony and Sicario Day of of the Soldado for helping make this video possible!!!
About the Humvee:
The Humvee seats 4 with an available fully enclosed metal cabin with a vertical windshield. The vehicle also has disc brakes on all 4 wheels, and 4-wheel Portal axle double-wishbone suspension. The brake discs are not mounted at the wheels as on conventional automobiles, but are inboard, attached to the outside of each differential. The front and rear differentials are Torsen type, and the center differential is a regular, lockable type. Torque-biasing differentials allows forward movement as long as at least one wheel has traction. It runs on specialized 37 × 12.5 radial tires with low-profile runflat devices. Newer HMMWV versions can be equipped with an optional central tire inflation system (CTIS) kit in the field. While it is optimized for off-road mobility, it can drive at highway speeds of 55 mph.
HMMWVs are well suited for air mobile operations as they are transportable by C-130 or larger transports, droppable by parachute, and can be sling-loaded from helicopters, though there are smaller vehicles such as the Growler which were designed to fit into smaller craft such as the V-22. The HMMWV can be delivered by the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System which pulls the vehicle out of the open rear ramp just above the ground without the aircraft having to land.
There are at least 17 variants of the HMMWV in service with the U.S. military. HMMWVs serve as cargo/troop carriers, p ambulances (four litter patients or eight ambulatory patients), M220 TOW carriers, M119 howitzer prime movers, M1097 Avenger Pedestal Mounted Stinger platforms, MRQ-12 direct air support vehicles, S250 shelter carriers, and other roles. The HMMWV is capable of fording 2.5 ft (76 cm) normally, or 5 ft (1.5 m) with the deep-water fording kits installed.
Richard has been at the forefront of digital media and marketing since 2005, with over five billion affiliated views and millions of subscribers and followers to his brands. His shift in focus went from traditional media to digital when he started a software company to facilitate the needs of content creators with the development of an iOS. Since then, he has worked with Google, the YouTube Product Team, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Universal and other companies in the entertainment and video game industries. Richard also consulted for a multitude of advertising agencies with creative strategies, analytics, and the optimization of content and marketing initiatives. In 2016, he helped launch Verizon and Hearst Media Partners' digital media brand “Rated Red” as an Executive Producer. Verizon and Hearst Media Partners focused on various types of content and collaborations within it brands like Complex. VHMP worked with brands like Ford on product initiatives like the F150, Ford Focus, Ford Raptor, Ford GT, Dodge, Ram, SEMA, LA auto show, Nissan and other car, truck, automobile, side by side, atv and motorcycle manufacturers.
During that time Richard and his fellow co-founders at www.blackriflecoffee.com saw growth in the e-commerce coffee company to the point where it required their full time attention. He resigned from Complex Networks to focus on the coffee company in the fall of 2017. The coffee company’s social channels provide entertainment, inspiration and education. Everything from how to make cold brew, how to make coffee via a chemex, diy drink recipes, diy food recipes and more. There is a focus on humor, comedy and sketch comedy based content around the brand to compliment and contrast with the serious themes and types of content from their charity work to telling the stories of the coffee company’s employees to those who have or currently still do serve their country and community.
Richard still enjoys creating content in the outdoor and adventure world. He is an avid wingsuit pilot and skydiver. He enjoys getting up into the mountains hiking, snow skiing, riding snow machines, fishing or anything to get him out from in front of a computer in the office. It's the little things in life...
