In a ship name such as HMCSAlgonquin(DDG 283) the ship prefix HMCS for His or Her Majesty's Canadian Ship indicates the vessel is a warship in service to the Monarch of Canada, the proper name Algonquin may follow a naming convention for the class of vessel. The hull classification symbol in the example is the parenthetical suffix (DDG 283), where the hull classification type DDG indicates that the Algonquin is a guided missile destroyer and the hull classification number 283 is unique within that type. Listed below are various hull classification types with some currently in use and others that are retired and no longer in use.
Auxiliary Ships
AGOR: Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (retired)
The U.S. Navy began to assign unique Naval Registry Identification Numbers to its ships in the 1890s. The system was a simple one in which each ship received a number which was appended to its ship type, fully spelled out, and added parenthetically after the ship's name when deemed necessary to avoid confusion between ships. Under this system, for example, the battleshipIndiana was USS Indiana (Battleship No. 1), the cruiserOlympia was USS Olympia (Cruiser No. 6), and so on. Beginning in 1907, some ships also were referred to alternatively by single-letter or three-letter codes—for example, USS Indiana (Battleship No. 1) could be referred to as USS Indiana (B-1) and USS Olympia (Cruiser No. 6) could also be referred to as USS Olympia (C-6), while USS Pennsylvania (Armored Cruiser No. 4) could be referred to as USS Pennsylvania (ACR-4). However, rather than replacing it, these codes coexisted and were used interchangeably with the older system until the modern system was instituted on 17 July 1920.
Canada (i/ˈkænədə/; French: [ka.na.da]) is a country in the northern part of North America. Its ten provinces and three territories extend from the Atlantic to the Pacific and northward into the Arctic Ocean, covering 9.98million square kilometres (3.85million square miles), making it the world's second-largest country by total area and the fourth-largest country by land area. Canada's border with the United States is the world's longest land border. Canada is sparsely populated, the majority of its land territory being dominated by forest and tundra and the Rocky Mountains; about four-fifths of the country's population of 35 million people live near the southern border. The majority of Canada has a cold or severely cold winter climate, but southerly areas are warm in summer.
The land now called Canada has been inhabited for millennia by various Aboriginal peoples. Beginning in the 15th century, British and French colonies were established on the Atlantic coast, with the first establishment of a region called "Canada" occurring in 1537. As a consequence of various conflicts, the United Kingdom gained and lost territories within British North America until left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly geographically comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotiajoined to form the autonomous federal Dominion of Canada. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the self-governing Dominion to the present ten provinces and three territories forming modern Canada. In 1931, Canada achieved near total independence from the United Kingdom with the Statute of Westminster 1931, and full sovereignty was attained when the Canada Act 1982 removed the last remaining ties of legal dependence on the British parliament.
Provinces of the Anglican Church of Canada are headed by a Metropolitan, elected from among the province's diocesan bishops. This bishop then becomes Archbishop of his or her diocese and Metropolitan of the Province. The current Metropolitan of the Province of Canada is the Most Rev. Percy D. Coffin, Archbishop of Western Newfoundland.
The United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration use a hull classification symbol to identify their ships by type and by individual ship within a type. The system is analogous to the pennant number system that the Royal Navy and other European and Commonwealth navies use.

10 US Navy Ship Types
The United States Navy has a complex system for naming and classifying its commissioned and non-commissioned vessels. The names of ships are carefully chosen and typically reflect the ideals, values, and significant people or places associated with American history.
Additionally, the hull classification symbol is used to designate a vessel's type, ranging from aircraft carriers and submarines to cruisers, destroyers, and frigates.
While modern surface combatants serve primarily as escorts for other vessels, they have gained new capabilities over the years, including land attack and missile defense roles. The Navy's use of nuclear reactors for power has also revolutionized modern warfare and transformed naval capabilities.

Note: This series is not affiliated with any faculty or department at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
By the end of the tutorial, you should be able to:
- Describe the purpose and break down of the common marine vessel types
- Identify typical applications
- Differentiate between hydrostatic- and hydrodynamic-supported vessels
- Examine an image or drawing of a vessel and draw preliminary conclusions about its vessel family

A ship identifier refers to one of several types of identifiers used for maritime vessels. An identifier may be a proper noun (La Niña); a proper noun combined with a standardized prefix based on the type of ship (eg. RMS Titanic); a serial code; a unique, alphanumeric ID (eg. A123B456C7); or an alphanumeric ID displayed in international signal flags (eg. , representing U6CH). Some identifiers are permanent for a ship while others may be changed at the owners' discretion although regulatory agencies will need to approve the change. Modern ships will usually have several identifiers.
In addition to proper nouns, types of ship identifiers include:
Code letters – an identifier for a ship that is displayed on vessels by ICS flags representing the letters of the alphabet and numbers 0–9, eg. the flags (from top to bottom) represented the identifier "USMW"
Hull number or Hull Identification Number (HIN) – a number used as an identifier for civilian and naval vessels, national/regional subtypes include:
Craft Identification Number – a permanent unique fourteen-digit alphanumeric identifier issued to all marine vessels in Europe
ENI number (European Number of Identification or European Vessel Identification Number) – a unique, eight-digit identifier for ships capable of navigating on inland European waters that is attached to a hull for its entire lifetime, independent of the vessel's current name or flag
Naval Registry Identification Number – United States until 1920s, replaced by hull classification symbol system
IMO number – a unique identifier issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for ships
Maritime call sign – an identifier used during radio transmissions, used mainly during verbal transmissions and sometimes incorporating a vessel's MMSI
Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) – a unique, nine-digit identifier used over radio frequencies to identify a vessel, used mainly for automated, non-verbal transmissions
Official number – a ship identifier number assigned to merchant ships by their country of registration, this system has been superseded by the IMO number system
Ship name – a proper noun chosen at the shipowner's discretion; may change several times during the vessel's lifetime
Ship class – a common name for a group of ships with similar design, usually named for the first vessel of the class, e.g. "Nimitz-class aircraft carrier"
Ship prefix – a combination of letters, usually abbreviations, used in front of the name or hull number of a civilian or naval ship, e.g. "HMS", "MV", "RV", "SS", or "USS"; naval prefix systems include:
Hull classification symbol (List of U.S. hull classifications) – United States since 1920s, replaced the Naval Registry Identification Number system
Hull classification symbol (Canada)
Pennant number – United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries

Is the government telling the truth about Canada's debt? | About That
The federal government is defending the fact that it overshot last fiscal year's deficit target by roughly $20 billion by suggesting our economy is the envy of the G7. The federal government is defending the fact that it overshot last fiscal year's deficit target by roughly $20 billion by suggesting our economy is the envy of the G7. Andrew Chang explains why that argument is misleading, and what $1.2 trillion in federal debt actually means. Images gathered from Reuters, Getty Images, and The Canadian Press.

Covering business, finance and economics every week can be a little bit depressing.
In just the last 2 years personal savings have been evaporated, consumer debt has hit record highs, the job market has been defined by anti-worker trends such as ghost jobs, broad sector layoffs and gigification, all while asset prices have ballooned far faster than household incomes, or even their intrinsic fundamentals.
The results have been pretty simple, it’s getting much harder for people who work for a living to keep up with those who already have assets…
Even the most diligent and career focused people are finding it tough to make ends meet let alone accumulate assets so that they too can one day achieve financial security…
But if ever you are feeling like it’s all a bit hopeless, just remember, it could be worse… you could be from Canada…

The United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration use a hull classification symbol to identify their ships by type and by individual ship within a type. The system is analogous to the pennant number system that the Royal Navy and other European and Commonwealth navies use.

In today's video, we'll be discussing the growth of Hull Classification systems in the US Navy. In addition, we'll be showing some work we recently had done on USS The Sullivans, DD537, and a change to her hull configuration.

In this demonstration, we will analyze and validate the hull surface model before progressing through the basic design phase. Once surfaces have been created or imported into the ShipConstructor environment, it is important to ensure they are producible and production ready.

This is part of a tutorial created for students studying in the Ocean & Naval Architectural Engineering discipline at Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. The tutorial is primarily aimed at late intermediate and early-advanced Naval Architecture students looking to develop their familiarity with principles of ship design. Today’s tutorial covers the taxonomy of vessels and the decomposition of the realm of vessels into some representative classifications and families of vessels.
The objective of this tutorial is to introduce the classical vessel types and outline the nominal definition and purpose of some of the most common classes of vessels you may work with during your career.
For more information about vessel sub-categorization see:

In the United States Navy, light cruisers have the hull classification symbol CL. Both heavy cruisers (CA) and light cruisers were numbered in a single sequence after 1931, hence there are some missing hull numbers.

WHO OR WHAT IS USS LST-960
"USS LST-960 was an LST-542-class tank landing ship in the United States Navy. Like many of her class, she was not named and is properly referred to by her hull designation."
Source:

If you are looking for an amazing destination with beautiful scenery, lakes, lighthouses, mountains, and valleys, Canada won’t disappoint you. Visit a quiet town, a national park, or a wilderness area not far from a major city for a vacation filled with gorgeous views, Northern Lights, waterfalls, and fun outdoor adventures - Canada got all for you.
Let's take a look at the 10 best places to visit in Canada that should be on everyone's bucket list.
