In 2001 a land attack cruise missile variant known as the HF-2E was announced, mass production of the HF-2E began in 2005.
Versions
There are three major versions of HF-2 in service. The first to enter service is the ship-based HF-2, with 2 twin box launcher on destroyer DD-915 first as trial vessel. Later all major surface combatant in RoCN, except the Knox, were equipped with 2 quad-launchers, plus the 7 WWII era Gearing DDGs that was upgraded to WC3 standard, from late 1980s to mid 1990s, had added a 1 quad-launcher by mid 1990s to give those air defense ships an anti-surface ability.
The CSIST is believed to have started a ramjet test vehicle program in 1990s, and this project was later merged with the Hsiung Feng (anti-ship missile systems) program. Flight testing of the definitive HF-3 prototype started in 7/2001. Operational testing and evaluation was started in late-2004 and was completed by 7/2005, on board the PFG-1101. According to Taiwan Defense Review, the supersonic HF-3 missile will dramatically reduce the reaction time available to the target. The typical reaction time against a high-subsonic anti-ship (Mach 0.85) missile like the Harpoon or HF-2, when it is detected by the target vessel's onboard radar, is about 2 minutes. An HF-3 missile, flying at just above Mach 2 at comparable sea-skimming altitude during the attack phase could cover the same distance in less than 35 seconds.
Hsiung-Feng II, Sky Bow III: Taiwan flaunts missile firepower as Beijing flexes military muscle
In a strong message to China, Taiwan conducted military exercises and displayed its missile power. Taiwan's air, sea and land forces, including the coast guard, held a joint missile firing exercise. Taiwan's exercises come close on heels of Beijing conducting military drills near the island. Taiwan flaunted several missiles during the drill including MBDA MICA, Hsiung-Feng II & Sky Bow III. The navy fired the RIM-66 standard missile from the Cheng Kung class frigate warship. The footage showed Taiwan’s air force firing a MBDA MICA missile from a mirage jet. Taiwan's main weapons research and development unit released a video and several photos of the test launch of its Hsiung Feng III missile for the first time on December 2nd. The HF-3 missile is seen launched from a land based test platform as well as from a ROC Navy (Republic of China - Taiwan) Cheng Kung-class frigate.
The Taiwan Hsiung Feng IIE surface-to-surface cruise missile, also known as "The Brave Wind". According to Taiwan Defense Review (TDR), the HF-2E land attack cruise missile is not a derivative of the Hsiung Feng 2 HF-2 anti-ship missile as it is often incorrectly reported.
The Taiwan Hsiung Feng IIE HF-2E land attack cruise missile is believed to be powered by a Taiwanese domestic turbofan engine. This engine is based on the technology and experience of the Microturbo 078 turbojet engine on the Hsiung Feng 2 anti-ship cruise missile.
