Howard Levy - HOHNER Masters of the Harmonica
Howard Levy is an acknowledged master of the diatonic harmonica, a superb pianist, innovative composer, recording artist, bandleader, teacher, producer, and Chicago area resident. In 1970 at the age of 19, he started playing the diatonic harmonica as a fully chromatic instrument, which opened new possibilities for an instrument that had been limited to playing Folk and Blues.
Equally at home in Jazz, Classical, Rock, Folk, Latin, and World Music, the two- time Grammy Award Winner is a favorite with audiences worldwide as well as a recording artist sought after by the likes of Kenny Loggins, Dolly Parton, Paquito D'Rivera, Styx, Donald Fagen, Paul Simon, etc.

I did a free-flowing, spontaneous mashup of my favorite old blues songs (ending with a surprise Irish lament) that just use one chord and have a very loose drone-like structure. They can put you into a trance! If you are a blues fan, you should know all 4 of them, at least 3! Leave your answer in the comments ✏️ (Anyone know that last Irish one?🎵)

Autumn in New York | Harmonica | Howard Levy
“Autumn in New York” is a beautiful ballad written in 1934 by Russian- born composer Vladimir Dukelsky, who, at the urging of his friend George Gershwin, changed his name to Vernon Duke. Some of the early electrified blues players (like Little Walter) were emulating the popular R&B riff- oriented sax players of the 40s & 50s- Louis Jordan, Sam “The Man” Taylor, Earl Bostic, etc. The handheld-mic-through-an-amp harp tone greatly resembled the sax, and these sax players played swinging, riff- oriented music designed for dancers. People used to dance to Blues, Swing, Jazz, and R&B, which back then meant “Rhythm and Blues”- a more rhythmic, jazzier style than Blues, and the precursor to early rock and roll.
5th Position can be very Bluesy if you take a step back and “see” it. All the in/out breathing patterns are different, but it’s full of juicy bends, and opportunities to use Overblows and Overdraws to sound like a guitar or a sax.
I chose the G harp because it's a low key harmonica closer to the range of a sax, plus- most harp players have one. Otherwise, I would have used an Ab harp to play in C, a standard key for Boogie Woogie and R&B.
