Breckinridge Elkins is the roughest, toughest, fastest-shootin', hardest-fightin' feller in the Bear Creek settlement, and probably in the entire Humbolt Mountains. As he travels further from home, he single-handedly takes on outlaws, settles (and starts) feuds and tries his hand at romancing the girls. He also discovers a lot of strange customs among other folks, such as building houses out of boards and wearing clothes that ain't buckskins. Set in Nevada during the late 1800′s, this collection of stories is a great rollicking romp through the American frontier as seen through the eyes of one of the most enjoyable characters created in the history of tall tales.

"April Morning" 1988 Lexington/Concord - American Revolution TV-Movie
April 19th 1775 - An excellent representation of the events on Lexington Green and the fighting during the retreat from Concord - based on the book “April Morning,” by Howard Fast which was originally published in 1961.
This novel was adapted for TV as a CBS Sunday Night movie (remember those?) as part of the Hallmark Hall of Fame in 1988. It was directed by Delbert Mann and starred Chad Lowe as Adam and Tommy Lee Jones as Moses, Susan Blakley, Rip Torn and 80s TV staple Robert Urich . Although it is set at the very beginning of the American Revolution it is more about Adam's journey to manhood and his relationship with his parents.
I remember watching this movie on a scratchy VHS dozens of times growing up. For education, entertainment, enlightenment and inspiration. We hope you enjoy....

We walked along, while bright and red
Uprose the morning sun;
And Matthew stopped, he looked, and said
'The will of God be done!'
A village schoolmaster was he,
With hair of glittering grey;
As blithe a man as you could see
On a spring holiday.
And on that morning, through the grass
And by the steaming rills
We travelled merrily, to pass
A day among the hills.
'Our work,' said I, 'was well begun;
Then, from thy breast what thought,
Beneath so beautiful a sun,
So sad a sigh has brought?'
A second time did Matthew stop;
And fixing still his eye
Upon the eastern mountain-top,
To me he made reply:

We hope you enjoy.

We walked along, while bright and red
Uprose the morning sun;
And Matthew stopped, he looked, and said
'The will of God be done!'
A village schoolmaster was he,
With hair of glittering grey;
As blithe a man as you could see
On a spring holiday.
And on that morning, through the grass
And by the steaming rills
We travelled merrily, to pass
A day among the hills.
'Our work,' said I, 'was well begun;
Then, from thy breast what thought,
Beneath so beautiful a sun,
So sad a sigh has brought?'
A second time did Matthew stop;
And fixing still his eye
Upon the eastern mountain-top,
To me he made reply:
'Yon cloud with that long purple cleft
Brings fresh into my mind
A day like this, which I have left
Full thirty years behind.
'And just above yon slope of corn
Such colours, and no other,
Were in the sky, that April morn,
Of this the very brother.
'With rod and line I sued the sport
Which that sweet season gave,
And, to the churchyard come, stopped short
Beside my daughter's grave.
'Nine summers had she scarcely seen,
The pride of all the vale;
And then she sang:—she would have been
A very nightingale.
'Six feet in earth my Emma lay;
And yet I loved her more—
For so it seemed,—than till that day
I e'er had loved before.
'And turning from her grave, I met
Beside the churchyard yew
A blooming girl, whose hair was wet
With points of morning dew.
'A basket on her head she bare;
Her brow was smooth and white:
To see a child so very fair,
It was a pure delight!
'No fountain from its rocky cave
E'er tripped with foot so free;
She seemed as happy as a wave
That dances on the sea.
'There came from me a sigh of pain
Which I could ill confine;
I looked at her, and looked again:
And did not wish her mine!'
—Matthew is in his grave, yet now
Methinks I see him stand
As that moment, with a bough
Of wilding in his hand.

"Howard had a tremendous interest in America—and a tremendous love for this country," says Mimi Fast, wife of the late novelist Howard Fast.
Fast (1914--2003) was one of the most prolific American writers of the twentieth century. He was a bestselling author of more than eighty works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenplays. In 1950, his refusal to provide the United States Congress with a list of possible Communist associates earned him a three-month prison sentence. During his incarceration, Fast wrote one of his best-known novels, Spartacus (1951).
Throughout his long career, Fast matched his commitment to championing social justice in his writing with a deft, lively storytelling style. For the first time, sixty-three of his works will be available as ebooks. Watch Mimi Fast, son and author Jonathan Fast, and author and daughter-in-law Erica Jong speak about his legacy.
