Non-Ideal Gases and the Van der Waals Equation
We learned about ideal gases, as well as kinetic molecular theory, which explains the laws that govern ideal gases. But some of the postulates of this theory won't always hold true. When a gas is highly pressurized and/or very cold, it will deviate from ideal gas behavior. Why might this be, and is there some other way we can do calculations on this sample of gas? There is! van der Waal's Equation for NON-Ideal Gases
If a gas isn't ideal, then PV=nRT won't cut it. In fact, the values you get from the ideal gas law can be 10-20% different from what you get in real life.
the Van der Waals equation for non-ideal gases fixes that - but you need the van der Waals constants a and b, which account for intermolecular interactions and non-zero volume of molecules.

Ionic and Covalent Bonds, Hydrogen Bonds, van der Waals - 4 types of Chemical Bonds in Biology
There are four types of chemical bonds essential for life to exist: Ionic Bonds, Covalent Bonds, Hydrogen Bonds, and van der Waals interactions. We need all of these different kinds of bonds to play various roles in biochemical interactions.
These bonds vary in their strengths. In Chemistry, we think of Ionic Bonds and Covalent bonds as having an overlapping range of strengths. But remember, in biochemistry, everything is happening in the context of water. This means Ionic bonds tend to dissociate in water. Thus, we will think of these bonds in the following order (strongest to weakest): Covalent, Ionic, Hydrogen, and van der Waals. Also note that in Chemistry, the weakest bonds are more commonly referred to as “dispersion forces.”

There are four types of chemical bonds essential for life to exist: Ionic Bonds, Covalent Bonds, Hydrogen Bonds, and van der Waals interactions. We need all of these different kinds of bonds to play various roles in biochemical interactions.
These bonds vary in their strengths. In Chemistry, we think of Ionic Bonds and Covalent bonds as having an overlapping range of strengths. But remember, in biochemistry, everything is happening in the context of water. This means Ionic bonds tend to dissociate in water. Thus, we will think of these bonds in the following order (strongest to weakest): Covalent, Ionic, Hydrogen, and van der Waals. Also note that in Chemistry, the weakest bonds are more commonly referred to as “dispersion forces.”

8 months after the incident, the meteorite, weighing in at 570 kg, was pulled out of Lake Chebarkul, making it one of the biggest meteorites ever recovered.

Optically Addressable Spin Qubits in 2D Materials
Tongcang Li from Purdue University presented the seminar on February 21, 2022.
Spin defects in solids such as diamond have been widely used for quantum sensing and quantum network applications. The recent discovery of spin qubits in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), a van der Waals layered material, provides new opportunities. Thanks to its layered structure, hBN can be easily exfoliated and integrated with other materials and nanostructures. For example, spin qubits in hBN will be particularly suitable for studying 2D magnetic materials. This talk will briefly review recent developments with spin defects in 2D materials. I will also report our recent work on femtosecond laser writing of spin defects in hBN and plasmon-enhanced high-contrast hBN spin defects for quantum sensing.

Exploring Martian Geology and Habitability through Mineralogy

Description: Mars has long been a source of curiosity and intrigue for humankind – we look out to our nearest cousin to better understand our own formation and evolution, the broader characteristics of our solar system and beyond, and whether or not we are alone in the universe. This desire to explore has led to many orbital and landed missions to Mars, with many striking and surprising discoveries made. One such mission is the NASA Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), with the Curiosity rover housing the most advanced and extensive payload of scientific instrumentation ever sent to another planetary object. Since 2012, Curiosity has performed in situ analyses of rocks and soil in Gale crater – providing great insight into Mars’ geologic past, particularly illuminating that there were, indeed, potentially habitable environments with periods of rich water regimes and geologic cycling. Among the instruments informing our understanding of the Martian past is the CheMin X-ray diffractometer, which performs X-ray diffraction on drilled rock and scooped sediment samples, providing quantitative mineralogical identification of major and minor phases, mineral phase abundance, unit-cell parameters, chemical composition of major phases, and, when coupled with bulk chemistry data derived from the MSL APXS (Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer) instrument, the chemical composition of the abundant amorphous material that we have discovered to be ubiquitous throughout Gale crater. Minerals, along with their chemical compositions, tell us the geologic history of a sample, a deposit, and a planet – they provide detailed insight and context for the complex evolutionary past of Mars.
In this seminar, Dr. Shauna Morrison will:
-Outline the MSL mission, with a brief mention of the newest NASA Mars mission: Mars2020
-Describe the MSL payload and detail the specifications and functions of CheMin
-Delve into the crystal chemical methods used to estimate mineral composition from X-ray diffraction data
-Briefly discuss the abundant amorphous material observed in all Gale crater samples and how we determine its chemical composition
-Provide an overview of the mineralogical results from CheMin in Gale crater
-Introduce some advanced analytics and machine learning techniques that are changing the way we use mineralogy to address questions in Earth and planetary science.

As our bodies are much more than the sum of organs and systems, our current biology is deeply flawed in its understanding of what organisms actually are. And if we don't correctly understand the ‘biological organism', how does this influence the quality of our ‘social organism’? With reference to the current coronavirus epidemic , he presents a new holistic view of the body with an orientation to the embryo by asking the question, “What keeps us together?”
