Piano pedagogy is the study of the teaching of piano playing. Whereas the professional field of music education pertains to the teaching of music in school classrooms or group settings, piano pedagogy focuses on the teaching of musical skills to individual piano students. This is often done via private or semiprivate instructions, commonly referred to as piano lessons. The practitioners of piano pedagogy are called piano pedagogues, or simply, piano teachers.
Professional training
The range of professionalism among teachers of piano is undoubtedly wide. "Competent instruction is not always assured by the number of years one has taken lessons", warned piano pedagogue and writer of numerous pedagogical books, James Bastien. The factors which affect the professional quality of a piano teacher include one's competence in musical performance, knowledge of musical genres, music history and theory, piano repertoire, experience in teaching, ability to adapt one's teaching method to students of different personalities and learning styles, education level, and so on.
The Piano Lesson is a 1990 play by American playwright August Wilson. It is the fourth play in Wilson's The Pittsburgh Cycle. Wilson began writing this play by playing with the various answers regarding the possibility of "acquir[ing] a sense of self-worth by denying one's past".The Piano Lesson received the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
A Romare Bearden painting, The Piano Lesson, inspired Wilson to write a play featuring a strong female character to confront African-American history, paralleling Troy in earlier Fences. However, on finishing his play, Wilson found the ending to stray from the empowered female character as well as from the question regarding self-worth. What The Piano Lesson finally seems to ask is: "What do you do with your legacy, and how do you best put it to use?"
Set in 1936 Pittsburgh during the aftermath of the Great Depression, The Piano Lesson follows the lives of the Charles family in the Doaker Charles household and an heirloom, the family piano. The play focuses on the arguments between a brother and a sister who have different ideas on what to do with the piano. The brother, Boy Willie, is a sharecropper who wants to sell the piano to buy the land (Sutter's land) where his ancestors toiled as slaves. The sister, Berniece, remains emphatic about keeping the piano, which shows the carved faces of their great-grandfather's wife and son during the days of their enslavement.
Piano Lesson was a British television series which aired on the BBC during 1950. It was hosted by Sidney Harrison, who gave piano lessons. The first series was aimed at beginners, while the second series intermediate students. Harrison also gave piano lessons on other programmes during the 1950s, including the BBC's children's sesson.
The series is likely lost, as very few telerecordings exist of BBC television from before 1953.

Prison Work Song from The Piano Lesson, August Wilson
In the play, this is "'Berta 'Berta," a prison work song the men learned while in Parchman Farm (Penitentiary) in Mississippi. You can hear its roots in the field songs of slaves and in gospel call-and-response, as well as the relation to its distant descendant, rock 'n' roll. Actors: Charles Dutton, Courtney Vance, Carl Gordon, Tommy Hollis. Dir. Lloyd Richards.
Afterwards, hear a short clip of a real prison work song.
Interesting fact: Dutton was a real convict (possession of a deadly weapon and assaulting a prison guard) before becoming an actor.
I LOVE listening to this song.

Don't get faster, Mrs. Paroo: If you don't mind my sayin' so, It wouldn't have hurt you To find out what the gentleman wanted. Marian: I know what the gentleman wanted. Mrs. Paroo: What, dear? Marian: You'll find it in Balzac. Mrs. Paroo: Excuse me fer livin' but I never read it. Marian: Neither has anyone else in this town. Mrs. Paroo: There you go again with the same old comment About the low mentality of River City people, And takin' it all to much to heart. Marian: Now, Mama, As long as the Madison Public Library was entrusted To me for the purpose of improving River City's cultural level, I can't help my concern that the Ladies of River City Keep ignoring all my council and advice. Mrs. Paroo: But, darlin'--when a woman has a husband And you've got none, Why should she take advice from you? Even if you can quote Balzac and Shakespeare And all them other highfalutin' Greeks.
