How Much Is Enough? is a game show that aired on Game Show Network from January 8, 2008 to March 28, 2008. The show was hosted by Corbin Bernsen, and four contestants competed with a "money clock".
Gameplay
The general objective was to avoid being the greediest player. For each money clock played, a dollar figure was shown that rapidly increased or decreased. Players held lock-out buzzers behind their backs and secretly locked-in at a point when they believe the money clock is high enough to be valuable to them, but low enough not to be the "greediest" player (the player who locked-in at the highest value). For each of the five money clocks ($1,000, $2,000, $3,000, $4,000, and $5,000), the greediest player banked no money for the just-played money clock. For the $5,000 clock, the most cautious (lowest value) player also banked nothing. The other players for each clock banked the value when they locked-in. The $1,000, $3,000, and $5,000 clocks counted upward from $0 to that amount, while the $2,000 and $4,000 clocks counted down to $0.
The book asks why Westerners work so many hours per week and lead lives that revolve around money, business and financial decisions in defiance of John Maynard Keynes' 1930 assertion that there would come a time (around 2015) when capitalism would be able to provide for all our needs and the work week would drop to 10 or even 5 hours.
The book and (Edward Skidelsky's writing generally) looks into the idea of The good life and how Capitalism may have been the key to it, but we have now lost sense of the good life as a priority.
The solutions offered to this problem are to "curb insatiability" and to consider a form of basic income for society.
