Mauritius (i/məˈrɪʃəs/; French:Maurice), officially the Republic of Mauritius (French:République de Maurice), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean about 2,000 kilometres (1,200mi) off the southeast coast of the African continent. The country includes the island of Mauritius, Rodrigues (560 kilometres (350mi) east), and the outer islands (Agaléga, St. Brandon and two disputed territories). The islands of Mauritius and Rodrigues (172km (107mi) southwest) form part of the Mascarene Islands, along with nearby Réunion, a French overseas department. The area of the country is 2,040km2. The capital and largest city is Port Louis.
The island of Mauritius was visited during the medieval period by the Arabs and then by the Portuguese, who named it Dina Arobi and Cirne, respectively. The island was uninhabited until the Dutch Republic established a colony in 1638, with the Dutch naming the island after Prince Maurice van Nassau. The Dutch colony was abandoned in 1710, and, five years later, the island became a French colony and was named Isle de France. Due to its strategic position, Mauritius was known as the "star and key" of the Indian Ocean.
Maurice is a traditionally masculine given name. It originates as a French name derived from the Latin Mauritius or Mauricius and was subsequently used in other languages.
Its popularity is due to Mauritius, a saint of the Theban Legion (died 287).
Mauritius is otherwise attested as a given name of the Roman Empire period, in origin meaning "one from Mauritania", i.e. "the Moor".
Forms in other languages include:
Spanish Mauricio, Italian Maurizio, Dutch Maurits, Greek Μαυρίκιος (Mavrikios), Russian Маврикий (Mavrikiy), German Moritz, English Morris.

Saint Maurice also Moritz, Morris, or Mauritius (died 287), Roman legionnaire and Christian martyr
Maurice (emperor) or Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus (539–602), Byzantine emperor
Maurice (bishop) (died 1107), bishop of London, Lord Chancellor and Lord Keeper of England
On the 1618 voyage, the ship was commanded by SupercargoWillem Janszoon and captained by Lenaert Jacobszoon, when they sighted North West Cape in Western Australia on 31 July 1618. On that occasion they had believed that the mainland peninsular west of the Exmouth Gulf, was an island. They went ashore there and it is written that they discovered human footprints, as follows.
Letter Of supercargo WILLEM JANSZ(OON) to the Managers of the Amsterdam
Chamber, October 6, 1618.
A.
Worshipful Wise Provident Discreet Gentlemen,
(Sailed 1000 miles to eastward in in 38 degrees with notable success.)
The present serves only to inform you that on the 8th of June last with the ship Mauritius we passed Cape de bon esperence, with strong westerly winds, so that we deemed it inadvisable to call at any land, after which we ran a thousand miles to eastward in 38 degrees Southern Latitude, though we should have wished to go still further east.

BONZOUR from the beautiful African island nation of MAURITIUS!

But after getting in touch with some locals from Mauritius who have kindly introduced me to their culture and showed me around the island -- I have put together this video which highlights the most interesting things I've learned about Mauritius so far.

Mauritius - Tropical Paradise in the Indian Ocean | Free Nature Documentary
The important writer Mark Twain once wrote: "Mauritius was created first, then the paradise!" Sandy beaches border azure blue bays. The green sugar cane grass sways in the wind as if it were waves in the ocean.
Spacious tea plantations alternate with beautiful parks. Usually prosperous guests spend their vacation here. But Mauritius is more than just a dream island for the rich and famous. The colonial times are over.
However, the colourful culture is still marked by the former slaves and Indian immigrants. Dances like the "Sega" or the various Creole cuisine make a visit on this amazing island an unforgettable experience. The many species of animals also contribute to it.

If you are like I was a few days ago, then you don't know much about this hidden country of Mauritius, which lies off the southeastern coast of Africa.
But after getting in touch with some locals from Mauritius who have kindly introduced me to their culture and showed me around the island -- I have put together this video which highlights the most interesting things I've learned about Mauritius so far.

‼️This was Found in a 500,000,000 year old Dolostone ROCK?!‼️ More Rocks.. 😭 #shorts
Mining this huge old rock and to find nothing but more rock...once again!! Goes to show that even inside of these large dolostone boulders, you still may not find crystals or any crystal pockets. Sometimes hard work doesn't pay off!!
These are dolostone rocks from the herkimer County of new york. The crystals and rocks from this location are approximately 500 million years old.
The garbage crow bar action is due to having one free hand while trying to record lol.

Ian Burnet - The Tasman Map: The Biography of a Map
Recored live on 3 March 2021
Every visitor who passes through the vestibule of the Mitchell Library stops to admire the magnificent marble mosaic of the Tasman Map. Over a period of only forty years from 1606 to 1644 and based on sixteen separate discoveries, the first map of Australia took shape and was not to change for another 125 years until the British explorer James Cook charted the east coast in 1770. The story of these voyages of discovery and how the Mitchell Library managed to acquire this cartographic treasure will bring new recognition to an icon of both Dutch and Australian history.

Subsidiaries and divisions include Uniglory Marine Corp. (Taiwan), Evergreen UK Ltd. (UK), and shipping company Italia Marittima S.p.A. (Italy).
In 2007, Hatsu, Italia Maritima, and Evergreen were merged into the single "Evergreen Line."
The majority of Evergreen's shipping containers are painted green with the word "Evergreen" placed on the sides in white letters. Uniglory containers are similarly painted and marked, but those containers are bright orange. Evergreen's refrigerated "reefer" containers have a reverse color scheme (white containers with green lettering).

Welcome to paradise island! This is Mauritius, the green volcanic island off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. We fly our drone over the famous Le Morne mountain, visit the seven colored earth and Chamarel waterfall and drive through the Black River Gorge. Of course we also see the best hotels and lay down on the perfect beaches. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Mauritius!
In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. From Johannesburg we take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Reunion.

BONZOUR from the beautiful African island nation of MAURITIUS!
(I didn't misspell 'Bonzour,' it means 'Hello' in their language of Creole, which is very similar to French) ;)
Have you ever been to Mauritius or know anything about Mauritian culture? What is your favorite part about the country?

The Story Behind the name of Mauritius:
Mauritius has a name that refers to the Netherlands. While many African countries decided to change their colonial names, The island nation of Mauritius chose to keep the name given by its first colonizer, the Dutch.

Chapter: Introduction Part 1.2
Title: The History of Australian Exploration from 1788 to 1888
Year: 1888
Published: Sydney
Note: This Introduction contains descriptions of Aboriginal Australians which could be at best described as unkind. This is read to truthfully capture the words of the author. As an Australian, this channel's originator believes it is important for contemporary Australians to confront these uncomfortable truths of our past. It is hoped that challenging as it may be, the listener receives it in this spirit of honest reflection.
Ian Burnet has a B.Sc. degree in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Melbourne. He is the author of four books on Maritime History including Spice Islands and East Indies, which concerns the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and the history of the spice trade from Eastern Indonesia. In his latest book, The Tasman Map – The Biography of a Map, Ian uses his knowledge of this history to put the early Dutch exploration of Australia and the first European mapping of Australia into historical context.

Evergreen calls on 240 ports worldwide in about 80 countries, and is the fifth largest company of its type. The company's activities include: shipping, construction of containers and ships, management of ports, and engineering and real estate development.
