How Linux Became King Of The UNIX World
Nowadays Linux is the defacto choice if you need a Unix like system on a server but there was a time where if you needed Unix that wasn't the optionthe only option was Unix and that got expensive.

Did you know that Microsoft made their own version of UNIX, all the way back as far as 1979, before MS-DOS and Windows was even a thing!? As usual, no story of computing folklore would be complete without a bit of controversy, and the story of Xenix is not short of a fair few crazy moments! Controversy aside, I bet you'll learn a good bit about a bit of history today, that could have changed the way we see and use computers a whole lot, if Xenix had won the day. The Making of Linux: The World's First Open-Source Operating System
GNU/Linux was the first complete open source and free operating system. The development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux OS is one that every tech enthusiast should know.
From a hobby project in 1991 to one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, the development of Linux is a remarkable story of collaboration, innovation, and open-source software. Linux, for those that don’t know, is a community of open-source operating systems developed on top of the Linux kernel - the core of the operating system, responsible for managing resources, providing access to hardware, and communicating with other software.
One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby ...

The Hidden Early History of Unix The Forgotten history of early Unix
by Warner Losh
At: FOSDEM 2020
https://video.fosdem.org/2020/Janson/early_unix.webm
The early history of Unix is much richer than is usually presented. There are many hidden gems that are little known and quite interesting to learn about. The dates of many of the "firsts" for Unix accomplishments is much earlier than people think. This well-researched talk explores those gems, firsts and shares many artifacts from the early days of Unix. Many of these artifacts have just come to light in recent years, and change how we view the early history of Unix. Even the oldest of grey beards will learn things they didn't know about Unix from this talk.
Most histories of Unix follow the same old boring plan: talk about Multics, Ken scrounging the pdp-7, moving to the pdp-11, rewriting in C and then ...

The Dark Years of UNIX (2003-2011) | A Decade Lost to Legal Battles | UNIX and Linux Legal Attacks
In this video, we spend 95 seconds of your valuable time to bring you a brief history of the dark years of UNIX in 1080 full HD (version 2).
This video starts in 2003 when SCO filed their first lawsuit against IBM and put the entire global Linux community on legal notice; and ends in 2011 when a US appeals court renders their final judgement against SCO and confirms a prior jury verdict that Novell was the owner of the UNIX licenses. SCO agrees to stop legal actions against UNIX in the future.
From the final scene, our conclusion in this short film:
"There were no winners in the historical protracted
legal battles over the UNIX operating system
except for other computer operating systems.
Arguably, Microsoft was the “winner” in this war."
The story for this brief timeline has been su...

Unix was developed in the mid 1960s by Bell Labs, and it was a single task system written in Assembly, before it moved to C.
It still exists today, mainly in Solaris, previously owned by Sun, but now by Oracle, and others less ran options. These systems were born out of the open source code that was published before Unix became commercial.
Apart from BSD, most other Unix systems are now proprietary and generally limited to industry, finance or health related activities. They're also generally sold with the hardware they run on.
You probably all know that Linux was developed by Linus Torvalds while he was a student in Helsinki. He enjoyed Unix but at that point, the system had become proprietary, and so couldn't be tailored to his needs. As a pet project, he created his own kernel that was basically a Minix clone, itself a Unix clone, which Torvalds wanted to modify to run on 32 bit systems.
Interestingly, while Linux doesnt share any code with Unix, the kernel absolutely behaves like Unix. Linux is also POSIX compliant. POSIX being a standard that was created because so many Unix variants were popping up, that is was necessary to ensure they all worked in a similar way and were compatible with each other.
And you might wonder how a hobby project developed as open source managed to replace a commercial, company backed, already installed system. And the reasons are many.
At first, Unix couldn't be commercialized as a product, because AT&T had entered an agreement with the US government stating they wouldn't try and sell computer software. That meant Unix was sold for the cost of shipping and printing the tapes
You received the source code as-is and patching options were limited, which meant most people who bought Unix bought it to maintain it and fix it themselves, which led to many companies creating their own versions of Unix and sharing the source code with one another.
The agreement ended, though, and this meant AT&T could start selling Unix as a product, as could other companies. With the ability to commercialize Unix came a huge competitive battle, with each company now realizing there was money to be made, and stopping the flow of source code. Every unix version started to diverge from each other and to behave differently, which killed one of the big advantages of Unix.
ALl these sytems and competition is referred to as the Unix wars.
Also at that point, personal computers were really starting to take off, and Microsoft dominated that space with Windows.
Unix also was really only a way to sell computers that ran on RISC chips. At the time, Intel's x86 was a very limited architecture, had poor performance compared to RISC CPUs, and was only suitable to be produced en masse cheaply for the end user.
But with these sales, Intel, and then AMD were able to fund the development of better chips, which in turn outgrew the RISC chips that Unix depended on to be sold.
But why Linux and not BSD? BSD had existed for longer, it was a known quantity, and it worked in the same way as what companies were used to.
The gist of it is legal battles. BSD was slowly moving away from code used in the original SYSTEM V, which AT&T held the rights to. AT&T then sued Berkeley Software Design, arguing they had breached Unix's license contract, that their code infringed on copyright, and that it diluted the UNIX trademark.
With this lawsuit, BSD was prevented from distributing the Net/2 release until the case was decided, which basically stopped them in their tracks.

Get ready for a compelling story!
Learn about: Legal battles! Product mergers! Acquisitions! UNIX on the original PC and Apple Lisa! Steve Ballmer on Cocaine!

One could say it all started in 1991 when Linus Torvalds, a computer science student at the University of Helsinki, started working on the operating system as a hobby project. He was frustrated with the proprietary nature of existing operating systems and wanted to create a free and open-source alternative that anyone could use and contribute to. A kernel that could be independent of any OS and be used on his hardware, the new Intel 80386 microprocessor. But it began 22 years earlier. This is the story of the development of the Linux kernel and the GNU/Linux operating system.
I hope you enjoyed it. Making these videos about computer science history is quickly becoming a passion of mine, with many more to come, so if you liked this one, subscribe to the channel as I’m sure you’ll like the ones to come, like when we dive into the GNU project. Any and all recommendations for future videos are welcome in the comments. Until next time, y’all have a good one.

Most histories of Unix follow the same old boring plan: talk about Multics, Ken scrounging the pdp-7, moving to the pdp-11, rewriting in C and then the explosion that happened with V6 and V7 before jumping into the Unix wars between AT&T and BSD followed by something about Linux (either pro or con depending on the speaker's politics). We've all seen it, and many can predict which "classic" pictures will be used, the points that will be made, and the arcs drawn.
This talk is nothing like that. It brings all the early years of Unix to life in a unique way. The early years of Unix were surprising rich. The author will use original sources to take you on a tour of many of the firsts in Unix and explore the community ties key to Unix's early success. Many of today's fads, like microkernels, hypervisors, multiprocessing and user mode execution actually happened early on in Unix's history, long they were today's fads. "What's old is new again" has never been so apt. You'll be surprised to learn how early each of these things happened. Come see the secret history of Unix as it played out both in obscure business units of AT&T and in the world wide users groups who banded together to support each other when AT&T wouldn't. You'll see footage of early machines as well as the first real Unix application: space travel (newly rediscovered and restored by the TUHS group). See first hand the machines, programs, newsletters and documentation that together weave a rich tale of innovation, community and working within constraints. Learn how today's open source movement owes a debt to these early communities and how they paved the way for Unix to become the open and ubiquitous system it is today and helped sow the seeds for the communities of today.

The story for this brief timeline has been summarized from articles on Wikipedia and Groklaw.
