"Hot Fun in the Summertime" is a 1969 song recorded by Sly and the Family Stone. The single was released in the wake of the band's high-profile performance at Woodstock, which greatly expanded their fanbase. The song peaked at number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart and number 3 on the U.S. Billboard soul singles chart in autumn 1969. It is ranked as the seventh biggest U.S. hit of 1969, and the 65th in Canada.
Thematically, "Hot Fun in the Summertime" is a dedication to the fun and games to be had during the summer. "Hot Fun in the Summertime" was intended to be included on an in-progress album with "Everybody Is a Star" and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"; the LP was never completed, and the three tracks were instead included on the band's 1970 Greatest Hits LP. This song is known for its rare use of Strings, in a Sly and the Family Stone song, featuring violins being played in the upper register.
"In the Summertime" is the debut single by British rock band Mungo Jerry. Written by lead singer Ray Dorset, it celebrates the carefree days of summer. In 1970 it reached number one in charts around the world, including seven weeks in the UK Singles Chart, two weeks in one of the Canadian charts, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the US. It is considered one of the best-selling singles of all time with an estimated 30 million copies sold.
The song took Dorset only ten minutes to compose on a second-hand Fender Stratocaster while he was taking time off work from his regular job, working in a lab for Timex. The song's lyric "have a drink, have a drive, go out and see what you can find" led to the song's somewhat ironic use in a UK advert for the campaign Drinking and Driving Wrecks Lives.
Background
The initial UK release was on Dawn Records, a new label launched by Pye. It was unusual in that it was a maxi single, playing at 33 rpm, whereas singles generally played at 45 rpm. It included an additional song, "Mighty Man" (also written by Dorset) on the A-side, and a much longer track, the Woody Guthrie song "Dust Pneumonia Blues", on the B-side. As the record was sold in a picture sleeve, also not standard at the time, and only sold at a few pence more than the normal 45 rpm two-track single, it was considered value for money. The small quantities of 45 rpm discs on the Pye record label, with "Mighty Man" on the B-side, and without a picture sleeve, were pressed for use in jukeboxes. These are now rare collectors items.
Hot Fun is the third album from Dayton with the ever popular redention of Sly and the Family Stone's 1969 classic song Hot Fun in the Summertime. The album was moderate yet well received by Billboard critics for its cool skating and stepper’s groove and set amidst some jazzy riffing and ensemble vocals that are totally great as well as the rest of the album with its excellent bouncy and joyous mode, with mixed male and female vocals .The group moved from their previous label, Liberty to Capitol Records. The album also features "Krackity Krack" with another Dayton native, Bootsy Collins and the funk and jazzy "Movin' Up". Other major hits include the bouncy and funky “We Can’t Miss”, the danceable single “Meet The Man”, funky tune of "Gunch" and the slow jam "Patiently".
