What is historical revisionism? Or the rewriting of history? Let's find out.
History (derived from Ancient Greek ἱστορία (historía) 'inquiry; knowledge acquired by investigation') is the systematic study and documentation of human behavior.
The period of events before the invention of writing systems is considered prehistory. "History" is an umbrella term comprising past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of these events. Historians seek knowledge of the past using historical sources such as written documents, oral accounts, art and material artifacts, and ecological markers. History is incomplete and still ha...

Playing the Victim | Historical Revisionism and Japan
Nazi Germany always seems to be our go-to villain whenever we depict World War 2, despite the fact that Imperial Japan killed just as many people. Japan also seems to be portrayed as a victim of the war rather than one of the main aggressors. Why is that?

What is Historical Revisionism?
In August of 2019, the New York Times published a series of articles collectively known as the 1619 Project, which "aims to reframe the country's history..." The Project has served as a catalyst to re-write America’s past and indoctrinate public-school educated children with a false narrative that promotes Critical Race Theory. According to the Pulitzer Center, in 2020 already some 4500 schools were teaching curriculums based on the Project and in all 50 states. This video describes what this false narrative teaches to our children, and why tax paying parents of the public schools should resist it.

Why we need a New Term for "Revisionist Historians"
People get confused by the term 'Revisionist Historian', thinking that revising or rewriting the past could lead us down a dark and distorted path. The problem is that this confusing term actually means two things - revision of the wrong bits of the past (good), and the deliberate distortion of the past (bad). This is why we need a new term to describe the dark-side of historical revisionism. Let me explain in the video.

The Historical Revisionism of "Modern Standards"
A common refrain when analyzing old problematic media is that it was made "in a different time." This is a self-protective lie, as bigotry is equally unacceptable in all decades and all cultures. Furthermore it ignores or outright erases the opinions of marginalized people of that time, who were frequently speaking out against these works often to their own peril. "A different time" is historical revisionism propping up the opinions of straight/white/cis people as inherently "more important."

Hayley Ortwein in her speech "Historical Revisionism and its Effects on Student Comprehension", reveals the tactics used in schools to teach History.
History is incomplete and still has debatable mysteries.
History is an academic discipline which uses narrative to describe, examine, question, and analyze past events, and investigate their patterns of cause and effect. Historians debate which narrative best explains an event, as well as the significance of different causes and effects. Historians debate the nature of history as an end in itself, and its usefulness to give perspective on the problems of the present.
Stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the tales surrounding King Arthur), are usually classified as cultural heritage or legends. History differs from myth in that it is supported by verifiable evidence. However, ancient cultural influences have helped create variant interpretations of the nature of history, which have evolved over the centuries and continue to change today. The modern study of history is wide-ranging, and includes the study of specific regions and certain topical or thematic elements of historical investigation. History is taught as a part of primary and secondary education, and the academic study of history is a major discipline in universities.
Herodotus, a 5th-century BC Greek historian, is often considered the "father of history", as one of the first historians in the Western tradition, though he has been criticized as the "father of lies". Along with his contemporary Thucydides, he helped form the foundations for the modern study of past events and societies. Their works continue to be read today, and the gap between the culture-focused Herodotus and the military-focused Thucydides remains a point of contention or approach in modern historical writing. In East Asia, a state chronicle, the Spring and Autumn Annals, was reputed to date from as early as 722 BC, though only 2nd-century BC texts have survived.

She explains why such lessons are even being taught and if the desired outcomes are arising. Hi, my name is Hayley Ortwein and I’m an eleventh grade student at Jenks High School. I have been an active member of the Jenks Speech and Debate team since the beginning of high school and feel incredibly passionate towards American politics and what role history plays in influencing political trends. As someone who will have taken more history classes than anything else by the end of senior year, the quality of that type of education is important to me. Ambeth Ocampo is a public historian whose research covers the late nineteenth-century Philippines: its art, culture, and the heroes who figure in the birth of the nation. He writes a widely read Editorial Page column for the Philippine Daily Inquirer and moderates a growing Facebook Fan Page. Ambeth Ocampo, Michael D. Pante, and Meynardo P. Mendoza, Ph.D. — Historians on Historical Revisionism: Martial Law in the Philippines
In this episode of Talakayan, Ambeth Ocampo, Michael D. Pante, and Meynardo P. Mendoza discuss the issue of historical revisionism, and how it is facilitated by digital technology. They present how social media serve as tools for conveying alternative histories, using martial law in the Philippines as a jumping off point. They insist that historical accounts provide avenues for thinking about the present, so that we will not repeat the past.
Ocampo is a Professor and former Chairperson of the Department of History, School of Social Sciences in the Ateneo de Manila University.
