Fundamentals of Marx: Historical Materialism
What is historical materialism? How does it relate to the Marxist dialectic and what makes it "materialist"?
This installment in the Fundamentals of Marx series looks at the basics of historical materialism. The second half of the video also considers what historical materialism is *not*.

What is Historical Materialism? | Quick Bites
A cornerstone to understanding Marxist theory is the idea of historical materialism and in this video we take a quick look at what that means.

While Marx was morally against capitalism his opposition primarily stood on scientific grounds.
To begin understanding why we have to take a look at a fundamental concept he and his colleague Friedrich Engels developed called historical materialism.

10. Marx's Theory of Historical Materialism (1)
Foundations of Modern Social Thought (SOCY 151)
We review Marx's theory of alienation and pick up with the transition from the young Marx to the mature Marx who breaks with Hegelian thought and the Young Hegelians. Reflecting on the disappointed hopes of the French Revolution, Hegel wrote that the civil servants in France represent the universal class. In direct contrast, Marx writes that the state only appears to be the universal class. He then goes about writing his theory of exploitation to argue that the workers, as the only fully alienated class, represent the universal position. He responds to Feuerbach with his eleven theses arguing for his own brand of historical materialism. The Marxist view of history: Historical materialism
In this video from Socialist Appeal's "Marx in a Day" event earlier this year (which celebrated Karl Marx's 200th birthday), Josh Holroyd discusses the contribution made by the great revolutionary thinker towards our understanding of history.
With their ideas of "scientific socialism", Marx and Engels provided the first real materialist analysis of how history develops, explaining that the motor force behind society's evolution is the class struggle and the drive to increase the humankind's productive forces.
In his talk, Josh contrasts the Marxist view of history with that traditionally taught in textbooks: on the one side, the idea that history is the product of 'Great Men'; and on the other side, the postmodern position, that history is just a series of unconnected and unrelated event...

While Marx was morally against capitalism his opposition primarily stood on scientific grounds.
To begin understanding why we have to take a look at a fundamental concept he and his colleague Friedrich Engels developed called historical materialism.
Materialism is a fancy way of saying
That the tangible world, the things we see hear and touch are all things that create or influence the intangible world, the ideas and thoughts we come up with
That's in opposition to something called idealism
Which claims that there's a 'natural' essence of things in reality which is independent of any conditions. That thoughts craft the material world we see around us
Historical materialism's central theme can be summed up in this line found in the communist manifesto
"The History of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggle"
Which means that the material forces of society, how we produce things and who gets those things develops certain classes and the material conditions of those classes develop society.
Engels sums this concept up next when he writes
"The final causes of all social changes and political revolutions are to be sought, not in men’s brains, not in men’s better insights into eternal truth and justice, but in changes in the modes of production and exchange."

Materialism:
1. Matter develops before mind

3. Matter can be influenced by mind, but is prior and more important
4. Everything is potentially knowable.
Applied to history – quantitative changes in production produce qualitative changes leading to the altering of the mode of production.
Early communalism
Slavery
Feudalism
Capitalism
Socialism
This is not a complete list as it reflects a Eurocentric focus – the developments in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East share many aspects but also have specific characteristics.
Terms related to these modes of production:
Instruments of Production – the tools and machines used in the process of production. (A)
Means of Production – the instruments of production plus the land, buildings, raw materials and forms of transportation. (B)
Forces of Production – the instruments of production plus those who work in the process of production with their skills, knowledge and abilities. (C)
Relations of Production – those relations established in the process of production between each other and to the means of production. (D)
B + D = Mode of Production
C - D = primary contradiction of capitalism
Historical Materialism – is the philosophical approach which postulates a) that the material basis of all societies is the production and exchange of the means of existence, b) that the distribution of wealth and the division of society into classes is dependent on what is produced and how it is produced and exchanged, c) that changes in the forces of production necessitate – sooner or later – a corresponding change in the relations of production.
Class – a group of people sharing a similar relationship to the means of production
Five features of classes –
1. Classes are relational – (slaves/slave owners, serfs/landowners, capitalists/workers) there has to be two at least for there to be classes.
2. Classes are not static – the grow and change over time – in both composition and size, coming into being and going out of existence.
3. Classes are not monolithic – they are segmented: white collar workers, blue collar workers; public sector workers, private sector workers; manual workers, skilled workers; industrial capitalists, finance capitalists; self-employed professionals, small shop keepers, artisan producers and farmers all of whom are petite bourgeoisie.
4. Within class structured society there is always an element of structural conflict – that is conflict not based on ideas, or personality, or likes or dislikes but on one’s place in the process of production and the interests one has as a result of one’s place in production. E.g. – the interests of the slave and the slave owner are inherently in conflict regardless of how nice or not nice the slave owner is. And while there may be periods when that conflict is not apparent, it is there and will at some point manifest itself.
5. For a class structured society to continue to exist there must be an element of what we call false consciousness – that is for the dominated class not to be aware of itself as a class and not to be aware of the interests of itself as a class, to accept that the existing order of things is right and proper. The obverse is also true, in order to continue to rule, the ruling class must be aware of itself as a class and to be aware of the interests of itself as a class.

Many of his "Theses on Feuerbach" remain very famous and widely-associated with Marx's oeuvre, including the last thesis, thesis eleven: the point of philosophy is not only to understand the world, but to change it.
00:00 - Chapter 1. The Importance of Marx's Theory of Alienation
15:06 - Chapter 2. Intellectual Developments towards the Theory of Alienation
27:27 - Chapter 3. "On the Jewish Question": Universal Emancipation

In his talk, Josh contrasts the Marxist view of history with that traditionally taught in textbooks: on the one side, the idea that history is the product of 'Great Men'; and on the other side, the postmodern position, that history is just a series of unconnected and unrelated events.
Above all, Josh explains, it is only by understanding the forces and factors that drive history - and, ultimately, our lives - that we can hope to change the world around us and realise a revolutionary socialist alternative.
