Avoiding Hip Replacement for Patients with Dysplasia - Mayo Clinic
Courtney E. Sherman, M.D., orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic, discusses hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is the medical term for a hip socket that doesn't fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone. A condition more common in women, if left untreated, a hip replacement is usually necessary. But new treatment -- a periacetabular osteotomy- can help patients avoid a full hip replacement.

Hip Dysplasia (DDH) doesn't mean you MUST suffer with hip pain. Erica was told that DDH lead to a tiny hip labrum tear, and that she needed to go through PAO (periacetabular osteotomy) to fix her hips and prevent future hip problems. She wanted an alternative to PAO, and she found it with exercise. Exercise can improve hip stability when you have hyper mobile hips. Muscles control the movement of bones are the most obvious, least invasive solution for hip instability.

How dysplasia presentation compares to other conditions
The ‘red herring’ that often gets misdiagnosed in patients with dysplasia

Hip-preserving surgery, instead of hip replacement, is an option for young adults. Wudbhav N. Sankar, an orthopedic surgeon at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and one of his patients discuss the benefits in this video. https://www.chop.edu/hippres
Young adults with hip defects or injuries who go to some adult centers for this problem may be misdiagnosed or told they are too young for a total hip replacement, rather than being offered other options to address their pain/mobility issues.
The Young Adult Hip Preservation Program at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is the largest and most comprehensive program in the region and one of the few places in the country to offer treatment options for adolescents and young adults with hip pain stemming from pediatric hip conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement and acetabular dysplasia (hip dysplasia). Each year, we examine hundreds of teens and young adults with congenital, developmental and post-traumatic hip disorders. Some require periacetabular osteotomy or other complex, specialized surgeries — only available at CHOP and select facilities across the country — to preserve, adjust or restore their natural hip function.
