Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) is an Indian consumer goods company based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is owned by Anglo-Dutch company Unilever which owns a 67% controlling share in HUL as of March 2015 and is the holding company of HUL. HUL's products include foods, beverages, cleaning agents, personal care products and water purifiers.
HUL was established in 1933 as Lever Brothers and, in 1956, became known as Hindustan Lever Limited, as a result of a merger between Lever Brothers, Hindustan Vanaspati Mfg. Co. Ltd. and United Traders Ltd. It is headquartered in Mumbai, India and employs over 16,000 workers, whilst also indirectly helping to facilitate the employment of over 65,000 people. The company was renamed in June 2007 as "Hindustan Unilever Limited".
Hindustan Unilever's distribution covers over 2 million retail outlets across India directly and its products are available in over 6.4 million outlets in the country. As per Nielsen market research data, two out of three Indians use HUL products.
Hindustan (Hindi:हिन्दुस्तान ; Urdu:ہندوستان ; IAST: Hindustān ; [ɦɪnd̪ʊˈst̪aːn]; pronunciation;) is a common geographic term for the northern/northwestern Indian subcontinent.
Etymology
Hindustan is derived from the Modern Persian word Hindū. In Old Persian, the region beyond the Indus River was referred to as Hinduš (the Iranic equivalent of SanskritSindhu), hence Modern Persian Hind, Hindū. This combined with the Persian suffix -stān (meaning literally "place", and having the same origin as the Sanskrit word sthān and the English word "stand") results in Hindustan, "land of Hind". By about the first century BC, the term "Hein-tu" was used by the Chinese to refer to North Indian people. The term came into common use under the rule of the Mughals, who referred to their dominion, centered on Delhi, as 'Hindustan'.
Current usage
Geographic area
The term "Hindustan" has been historically applied to the Gangetic Plain of North India, between the Himalayas and the Vindhyas and the Indus river basin in Pakistan.
Hindustan was the name of the northwestern subcontinent in medieval times as established by the Mughal Empire before the British Empire, and is used in some contexts to refer to the modern state.
Hindustan Motors was the producer of the Ambassador motorcar, which was once a mainstream car India, based on 1956 Morris Oxford series III and was in production from 1957 until 2014. Production of the Ambassador ceased on 24 May 2014.
One of the original three car manufacturers in India, founded in 1942 by Mr. B.M.Birla, it was a leader in car sales until the 1980s, when the industry was opened up from protection. All through its history, the company has depended on government patronage for its sales and for survival by eliminating competition. Manoj Jha was the Managing Director and R. Yeshwanth. Manoj Jha stepped down from the post on 21 February 2012. It began in Port Okha near Gujarat; in 1948, it moved to West Bengal. The place is now called Hindmotor.
