New Hindu #College at Cove & John #Ashram, East Coast Demerara #Guyana
I was allowed to visit the New Hindu College of Excellence at the Cove & John Ashram on August 24, 2022. It is still a work in progress. That was the upper flat only. This was an impromptu visit.
A brief history of the Ashram.
The Guyana Sevashram Sangha was started in 1956 by His Holiness Swami Purananandaji Maharaj, a direct discipline of Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj and incarnation of Lord Shiva, who started the Bharat Sevashram Sangha in India.
This twenty acres of swamp land was donated by the Resault Maharaj family.
Swami Purnananda work tirelessly to transfer this land with the help of selfless workers/devotees and Brahmacharies.
Bramcharie Secharran was the first Guyanese to be ordained as a Swami of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha, his name is Swami Vidyanandaji Maharaj.

HINDUS GATHER AT COVE AND JOHN ASHRAM FOR MAHA SHIVRATRI CELEBRATIONS
Each year, Hindus celebrate Maha Shivratri, an auspicious day revering Hindu God, Shiva. Many worshippers travel to the Cove and John Ashram on the East Coast of Demerara to offer prayers to the gigantic statue of Shiva that towers over the ashram, or to participate in many of the other devotional activities there. The News Room visited the ashram early Friday morning and spoke to Swami Shivashankar Ananda about the Maha Shivratri celebrations this year…

Cove & John #Ashram Part 2 (A part without my face in the video :-))
Please note that this is not how the compound looks regularly. The changing weather conditions have a negative impact on maintenance. As you can see the tractor tracks where some of the grass was cut and the other areas are unfinished. Unless the grass is cut and removed from the location then surrounding statues and temples cannot be clean. Since the compound is next to the Atlantic Ocean and when cleaning is done the dust and debris mess up the images because it is breezy as a result of the Atlantic Ocean being situated on the Eastern side of the compound.
The Guyana Sevashram Sangha was started in 1956 by His Holiness Swami Purananandaji Maharaj, a direct discipline of Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj and incarnation of Lord Shiva, who started the Bharat Sevashram Sangha in India.

2) Swami Bhajananda went to Canada to Head the Canadian Sevashram Sangha.
3) Swami Niliptanandaji went to London to head the London Sevashram Sangha.
In Guyana, Swami Purnananda saw the plight of society and thus he started the Hindu College. Children irrespective of their religion, ethnicity, and race attend Hindu College.
Discipline was and is the important factor that produces a lot of scholars in different fields of study. Today they are all over the globe performing service to Humanity in their special field of study. Over the years Hindu College has been producing individuals not only with academics but with values and principles. Over time, the structure of Hindu College was deteriorating and the alumni of the college bonded together and raise funds to build a state-of-the-art facility now the New Hindu College of Excellence.
The present building that accommodates students of Hindu College has a capacity of 300. There are a lot of unfinished projects at the Hindu College for example the tarmac, science laboratory, etc.
Because of the pandemic and economic situation, everything has been at a standstill and the new college is a work in progress.

Heroic Act By Hindu College Students And Bystanders Saves Man's Life
In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, three students from Hindu College at Cove and John, ECD, along with other individuals, came together to save a man's life following a harrowing incident this afternoon.
At approximately 16:00hr, a vehicle plunged overboard at Unity, Mahaica, ECD, leaving the driver in a life-threatening situation. The swift and courageous response from the students and onlookers proved to be instrumental in preventing a tragedy.
The individuals involved, despite the inherent risks, demonstrated exceptional teamwork and resourcefulness to extricate the man from the submerged vehicle. Their rapid response, calm under pressure, and effective coordination highlight the importance of community solidarity in emergency situations.
The administration of Hindu College commends the students for their courageous actions and extends gratitude to all those who assisted in this rescue effort. The College emphasizes the values of compassion, responsibility, and community engagement that are instilled in its students.

Rising amid a failing education system in the Caribbean is an unassuming, yet extraordinary high school/college in Guyana. It is the Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN) established by Swami Aksharananda, Ph.D., in 2003, on a solid academic and religious foundation. In 2015, SVN produced the Caribbean's top student for Business Studies, and Guyana's top two performers in the CSEC exams. The school has an almost 100% pass rate with some students attaining Grade Ones in up to 19 or 20 subjects. At one of the school’s graduation ceremonies, President David Granger of Guyana said: “I always tell others that if they wish to know what a school should be like, they should visit SVN.”
Based on interviews, site visits, and library and internet research, this paper seeks to address the following questions: (a) How has Swami been able to successfully engage the Guyanese Diaspora to contribute tangibly to the success of this private Hindu college in Cornelia Ida, WCD, that the school has been able to be surpassed only by the long-established (1844), State-funded Queen’s College in Guyana? (b) What are the challenges that need to be addressed by the State before the full potential of the diaspora engagement can be unlocked? And (c) how can the success of SVN be used as an example to advance comparative and theoretical knowledge on diaspora engagement practices and policies in Guyana?
