Mammoth Lakes is a town in Mono County, California, the county's only incorporated community. It is located 9 miles (14km) northwest of Mount Morrison, at an elevation of 7,880 feet (2,400m). The population was 8,234 at the 2010 census, up from 7,093 at the 2000 census.
History
The first people to inhabit the vicinity of Mammoth Lakes was the Mono people. Evidence declares that they have been living in the area for thousands of years. They settled in the valley but walked to other places when trading with different tribes.
The European history of Mammoth Lakes started in 1877, when four prospectors staked a claim on Mineral Hill, south of the current town, along Old Mammoth Road. In 1878, the Mammoth Mining Company was organized to mine Mineral Hill, which caused a gold rush. By the end of 1878, 1500 people settled in the mining camp called Mammoth City. By 1880, the company had shut down, and by 1888, the population declined to less than 10 people. By the early 1900s, the town of Mammoth was informally established near Mammoth Creek. The economics of the original town was based on logging and tourism. The first post office at Mammoth Lakes opened in 1923.
The Sierra runs 400 miles (640km) north-to-south, and is approximately 70 miles (110km) across east-to-west. Notable Sierra features include Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America; Mount Whitney at 14,505ft (4,421m), the highest point in the contiguous United States; and Yosemite Valley sculpted by glaciers out of one-hundred-million-year-old granite. The Sierra is home to three national parks, twenty wilderness areas, and two national monuments. These areas include Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks; and Devils Postpile National Monument. The Sierra Nevada range is the highest and longest mountain range in the contiguous United States.
The ecology of the Sierra Nevada, located in the U.S. state of California, is diverse and complex: the plants and animals are a significant part of the scenic beauty of the mountain range. The combination of climate, topography, moisture, and soils influences the distribution of ecological communities across an elevation gradient from 1,000 feet (300 m) to over 14,000 feet (4,300m). Biotic zones range from scrub and chaparral communities at lower elevations, to subalpine forests and alpine meadows at the higher elevations. Particular ecoregions that follow elevation contours are often described as a series of belts that follow the length of the Sierra Nevada. There are many hiking trails, paved and unpaved roads, and vast public lands in the Sierra Nevada for exploring the many different biomes and ecosystems.
The western and eastern Sierra Nevada have substantially different species of plants and animals, because the east lies in the rain shadow of the crest. The plants and animals in the east are thus adapted to much drier conditions.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains are located in eastern California and are part of the Rocky Mountains. The range runs 400 miles north-to-south and is 70 miles wide. The mountains are home to Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park. These parks are some of the most popular tourist destinations in California.
The mountains were created by the tectonic plates moving and colliding over millions of years. The mountains are made up of granite, making them some of North America's oldest rocks. The granite is resistant to weathering, which is why the mountains have been able to stay tall for so long.
The Sierra Nevada Mountains are a popular destination for hikers, climbers, and skiers. There are over 1,500 miles of hiking trails in the mountain range. Yosemite National Park has some of the most popular trails, including the Half Dome Trail and the John Muir Trail. The John Muir Trail goes for 211 miles from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States.
It is a popular destination for climbers. There are over 1,000 climbing routes in the range. Some of the most popular climbs are Half Dome in Yosemite National Park and El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Both climbs involve scrambling up a steep cliff using ropes and other climbing gear.
The Sierra Nevada Mountains are also a popular destination for skiers. There are over 2,000 miles of ski trails in the mountain range. The most popular ski resorts are located in Lake Tahoe, which is on the border of California and Nevada.

In those eighteen years and nine months I've been living here I always knew there'd come a day when I'd be leaving here Yes I know every crevice I've named them all There were none too big There were none too small If you came to my home you would find me alone with my old dog in the courtyard I'll buy a plot of land One full of trees Where I can practice taxonomy Me and my old dog we are the same We go to sleep and we dream of names It's not a bad life More like a game
