Henry Smith (May 20, 1788 – March 4, 1851) was first American-born Governor of the Mexican territory of Texas and briefly presided over the revolution there.
Early life
Smith was born the tenth and last child of James and Magdalen (Woods) Smith of Kentucky. At the age of 21, he became a merchant in Nashville, Tennessee, and married. Moving from place to place, he was ultimately attracted by land grants offered by the Mexican government and took his family to Brazoria County, Texas, in 1827. There he worked his lands, taught school, and did some surveying.
Becoming involved in politics, Smith was wounded in the 1832 Battle of Velasco. Elected alcalde of Brazoria in 1833, he was soon chosen a delegate to the Convention of 1833. In 1834, he was appointed by the Mexican governor as political chief of the department of the Brazos.
Texas Independence
Around 1835, Smith became a leader of party favoring independence for Texas, called the War, or Independence Party. This party met with the Peace Party at a convention in 1836 called the Consultation. There, these two parties debated whether to declare immediate independence from Mexico, or not. While urging an immediate declaration of independence, he helped prepare the organic law that served as the constitution of a provisional government. Smith was named governor of the provisional government but soon was locked in struggles with rivals both political and personal. He dissolved the provisional government's council which retaliated by impeaching him. Smith refused to relinquish the governorship to James W. Robinson but the matter was rendered moot by the Convention of 1836.
Smith was born in Baltimore, Maryland; moved with his parents to Massillon, Ohio, and later, in 1844, to Milwaukee. He attended the Milwaukee public schools, and from the age of 13 until he was 17 apprenticed as a bookbinder. His brother taught him the millwright trade in which he worked until he entered politics.
Political office
He served as a member of the Milwaukee Common Council from 1868–1872. In the 1877 election, Smith was elected to the State Assembly from Milwaukee County's Sixth District (sixth and thirteenth wards of Milwaukee) as a Socialist, with 618 votes to 381 for Democrat Charles Fashel and 381 for Greenback Jacob Olberman. He served only one term, being defeated in the 1878 election, in which he ran on the Greenback ticket, but received only 253 votes, to 488 for Democrat Alonzo H. Richards and 716 for RepublicanChristopher Raesser. In 1880 he ran for the Assembly from the Fifth Milwaukee County district on the Democratic ticket against incumbent Isaac Van Schaick, receiving 3778 votes to Van Schaick's 5678.
Henry Smith was a Bristol attorney-at-law and amateur artist who was forced to flee the country in 1809 after a duel in which he killed his opponent. His travels around Scotland and later Spain and Portugal during the Peninsula War (where he served in the army under Wellington) were recorded in a diary (1809–1810) which is today kept at the University of Kansas. He subsequently returned to the United Kingdom for trial, but was discharged without trial.
Early life
Henry Smith was born on 28 December 1774 at Queens Square Bristol, the son of Richard Smith, surgeon and Augusta, the daughter of Rev. Alexander Stopford Catcott and sister of Rev Alexander Catcott.

Houston is the largest city in Texas and the fourth-largest in the United States, while San Antonio is the second largest in the state and seventh largest in the United States. Dallas–Fort Worth and Greater Houston are the fourth and fifth largest United States metropolitan statistical areas, respectively. Other major cities include Austin (the state capital) and El Paso. Texas is nicknamed the Lone Star State to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state's struggle for independence from Mexico. The "Lone Star" can be found on the Texan state flag and on the Texan state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, "Tejas", which means 'friends' in the Caddo language.
The Texas was built in October 1856 for the Western & Atlantic Railroad by locomotive manufacturer Danforth, Cooke and Company in Paterson, New Jersey. It was subsequently shipped from Paterson to the Port of Savannah, traveled the Georgia Rail Road & Banking Company and Macon & Western Railroad, before finally being delivered to the W&A headquarters in Atlanta that same year.
Texas Homecare was a chain of DIY stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland, that operated from 1972 until 1999.
History
Texas Homecare was established in 1972, by Manny, Sydney and Gerald Fogel, who had previously founded the high street specialist paint and wallpaper chain Home Charm. Taking their lead from America, they revolutionised the United Kingdom DIY market, with the introduction of the 'DIY shed' style outlet. Mervyn Fogel, co-founder and managing director for over 25 years, had a vision of turning the small family business into a DIY retail empire.
Texas specialised in higher volume, lower margin DIY products. The company had been adversely affected, by a recession and depressed housing market.
Acquisition
With its acquisition, Homebase hoped to hold around 10% of the total DIY market in the United Kingdom. In May 1995, it was announced that only 26 Texas stores were to close, with limited redundancies. Sainsbury's found that full conversion to the Homebase format was an investment worth making, and allowed £50million for the task.

Why do we support trophy hunting?
Hunting tourism is at the forefront of wildlife conservation. People going abroad to hunt are what pays for conservation, the world over. Species that hunters have brought back from the brink of extinction include the bontebok and the markhor goat.
The modern problem for trophy hunting began with the Cecil The Lion story in 2015, when a US hunting tourist called Walter Palmer shot a lion in Zimbabwe. The animal rights lobby successfully presented it as an animal called 'Cecil', claiming it was popular with tourists. Most of the money they raised from the Cecil incident paid for lobbying, not conservation. Worldwide government actions following the incident led to some of the biggest and most tragic wildlife slaughters ever seen in Africa. As trophy bans fell into place, wildlife poaching boomed.
By the beginning of 2018, a kneejerk US trophy import ban on Tanzanian elephant and lion trophies was beginning to have real – and potentially devastating – consequences, including the loss of decades of successful nature conservation. Happily, the US reversed that decision.
When it comes to wildlife, there are two kinds of African countries: wildlife winners, which allow hunting and have healthy populations of wildlife; and wildlife losers, where hunting is banned. It is no coincidence that the last northern white rhino died in Kenya, an anti-hunting country.
