The Dardanelles (/dɑːrdəˈnɛlz/; Turkish:Çanakkale Boğazı, Greek:Δαρδανέλλια, Dardanellia), formerly known as Hellespont
(/ˈhɛlᵻspɒnt/; Greek: Ἑλλήσποντος, Hellespontos, literally "Sea of Helle"), is a narrow, natural strait and internationally-significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey, that forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and separates Asian Turkey from European Turkey. One of the world's narrowest straits used for international navigation, the Dardanelles connects the Sea of Marmara with the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas, while also allowing passage to the Black Sea by extension via the Bosphorus.
Most of the northern shores of the strait along the Gallipoli Peninsula (Turkish:Gelibolu) are sparsely settled, while the southern shores along the Troad (Turkish:Biga) Peninsula are inhabited by the city of Çanakkale's urban population of 110,000.

Hellespont | A Swim From Europe To Asia (Part One)
The Hellespont swim is familiar to many who make a pastime of pawing through open water. It's known as the Oldest Swim in the World – a 5km crossing from Europe to Asia through the strait of the Dardanelles.
This strait runs like a sinew between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean. It also connects the Aegean Sea to the inland sea of Marmara and is a boundary line between the continents of Europe and Asia.
It has become one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world.
For one day the great tankers and freighters plough to a halt, the whole shipping lane closes and up to 800 Turks take to the water to follow the heroic strokes of Leander and Lord Byron. A small band of foreigners also join in under the Swim Trek banner. This time the Wild Swimming Brothers were lucky enough to be among ...

This is what happened when we went out to join the 600 Turks who take part annually, and the small band of 70 Swim Trekkers who've started diving in with them...
