The Hellenic Police force was established in 1984 under Law 1481/1-10-1984 (Government Gazette 152 A) as the result of the fusion of the Gendarmerie (Χωροφυλακή, Chorofylaki) and the Cities Police (Αστυνομία Πόλεων, Astynomia Poleon) forces.
According to Law 2800/2000, the Hellenic Police is a security organ whose primary aims are:
Ensuring peace and order as well as citizens' unhindered social development, a mission that includes general policing duties and traffic safety.
Prevention and suppression of crime as well as protecting the state and its democratic form of government within the framework of the constitutional order, a mission which includes the implementation of public and state security policy.
Violence has flared in Athens for the second day running as a demonstration over alleged police brutality turned nasty.
Thursday's confrontation between a group of protesters and security forces came as four police officers were suspended amid a probe into ugly scenes at an earlier rally.
Those clashes occurred at an anti-austerity march, coinciding with a nationwide strike on Wednesday. One protester suffered serious head injuries and is in a critical but stable condition after brain surgery.

Another Wishing Stone to throw You try to protect me But just let me go And if you throw it out again You'll see my reflection come floating back in And I'm walking faster And losing my breath But it takes me farther than here Another stormy day I know The clouds turn to dust And the water to snow Another messenger is dead He falls with an arrow in his heart instead And I'm walking faster And losing my breath But it takes me farther than here I'm falling over And wasting my time But it takes me farther than here Another messenger is dead And I'm walking faster Losing my breath But it takes me farther than here And I'm falling over And wasting my time
in mid-January ... These measures are. Zero cost in paying bills ... The minister also presented the provision of a hazardous labor allowance to 150,000 uniformed men and women of the Hellenic Police, Fire Department, Coast Guard and Armed Forces ... .
... such a cushy post? And how did he manage to get away with so many crimes without punishment? Who was protecting him and why? Did the leadership of the Hellenic Police know about any of this or not?.
It was October 1994 when a group of 12 police officers, including two Greeks, surrounded a white villa in a suburb of Munich... At the time, Tsirogiannis had informed Interpol, Scotland Yard and the Hellenic Police about the funerary stele.
... police officer accused of raping his children ... The female police officer, who endured the terror in her home from 2016 until November, went to work at the Hellenic Police Headquarters (GADA) as usual.
... Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou, adding that the “relevant material – photos and videos – will simultaneously be sent to the Hellenic Police, where an officer will confirm the violation.”.
According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the 29-year-old man hanged himself using his shirt, despite the presence of 11 other detainees in the cell ...We can agree that it is possible to trust the police while also remaining skeptical at times.
“Authorities must ensure that police officers give protection to journalists while they cover protests, rather than harassing and detaining them.” ... CPJ’s email requesting comment from the Hellenic Police did not receive a response.
