Heimito von Doderer
Franz Carl Heimito, Ritter von Doderer; known as Heimito von Doderer (5 September 1896, Weidlingau (now part of Hadersdorf-Weidlingau, Penzing, the 14th District of Vienna) – 23 December 1966, Vienna) was an Austrian writer.
Family
Heimito von Doderer was born in Weidlingau, since 1938 a part of Vienna, in a forester's lodge where his family stayed while his father, the architect and engineer Wilhelm Carl (Gustav), Ritter von Doderer (1854, Klosterbruck (Czech: Loucký klášter), Znaim – 1932, Vienna) worked on the regulation of the Wien River. The lodge is not preserved, today a memorial marks the site. Wilhelm Carl Doderer also worked on the construction of the Tauern Railway, the Kiel Canal and the Wiener Stadtbahn public transport network. His brother Richard (1876–1955) and his father Carl Wilhelm (Christian) Ritter von Doderer (1825, Heilbronn –1900, Vienna; ennobled in 1877) too were noted architects and industrialists. Carl Wilhelm's wife Maria von Greisinger (1835–1914) by her mother was related to the Austrian poet Nikolaus Lenau.

Heimito von Doderer-Literaturpreis
The Heimito von Doderer-Literaturpreis (Heimito von Doderer Literature Prize, short also: Heimito von Doderer Prize) was established in 1996 to commemorate the 100th birthday of Heimito von Doderer. It was created as a memorial to "one of the most important writers of the 20th century", and to honor a single work or life work of a contemporary writer who excels in "language of high sensitivity and originality in the tradition of Doderer.
The award ceremony took place in 1996 in Vienna, in 1997 in Berlin, from 1998 the price has been awarded in Cologne.
"Narrative strong debuts" are awarded the Hauptpreis (main prize), an addition a Förderpreis (funding price) has been awarded regurlarly, a Sonderpreis (special award) irregularly. The Main prize is 20,000 Euros (from 2006), the funding and special awards are valued at 5,000 euros each.

He was awarded the Schlegel-Tieck Prize in 2013 for his translation of Veteranyi’s "Why the Child Is Cooking in the Polenta."
Daniel Kehlmann is a novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. His most recent novel, "Tyll," was shortlisted for the 2020 International Booker Prize. He lives in New York, NY.

“There is something deeply satisfying about physically filling a blank page with lines of your writing.” Though Kehlmann prefers the process of rewriting and reshaping, he still acknowledges the pleasure he derives from having overcome the blank page.
Daniel Kehlmann (b. 1975) is a German author, who was born in Munich, Germany and raised in Austria. He has written international bestsellers such as ’Me and Kaminski’ from 2003 (’Ich und Kaminski’) and ’Measuring the World’ from 2006 (‘Die Vermessung der Welt’) for which he was awarded the Heimito von Doderer Prize. The latter book furthermore sold around 3 million copies in Germany alone and roughly twice that worldwide, having been translated into more than 40 languages and made into a film in 2012. Moreover, Kehlmann’s novels are on the school syllabus in Germany.

About the book:
"The Strudlhof Steps" is an unsurpassed portrait of Vienna in the early twentieth century, a vast novel crowded with characters ranging from an elegant, alcoholic Prussian aristocrat to an innocent ingenue to “respectable” shopkeepers and tireless sexual adventurers, bohemians, grifters, and honest working-class folk. The greatest character in the book, however, is Vienna, which Heimito von Doderer renders as distinctly as James Joyce does Dublin or Alfred Döblin does Berlin. Interweaving two time periods, 1908 to 1911 and 1923 to 1925, the novel takes the monumental eponymous outdoor double staircase as a governing metaphor for its characters’ intersecting and diverging fates. "The Strudlhof Steps" is an experimental tour de force with the suspense and surprise of a soap opera. Here Doderer illuminates the darkness of passing years with the dazzling extravagance that is uniquely his.

Vincent Kling is a translator and scholar of German literature who teaches at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has translated fiction, poetry, and criticism by Heimito von Doderer, Heimrad Bäcker, Andreas Pittler, Gert Jonke, Gerhard Fritsch, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Aglaja Veteranyi. He was awarded the Schlegel-Tieck Prize in 2013 for his translation of Veteranyi’s "Why the Child Is Cooking in the Polenta."
Daniel Kehlmann is a novelist, playwright, and screenwriter. His most recent novel, "Tyll," was shortlisted for the 2020 International Booker Prize. He lives in New York, NY.
Tess Lewis has translated works from the French and German, including books by Peter Handke, Anselm Kiefer, Philippe Jaccottet, and Christine Angot, and for NYRB Classics, "The Storyteller Essays" by Walter Benjamin. Her awards include the 2017 PEN Translation Prize and a Guggenheim fellowship. She serves as the co-chair of the PEN Translation Committee and is an advisory editor for The Hudson Review.

Nach einer Jugend zwischen den Trümmern fand die Künstlerin Barbara Niggl Radloff (1936–2010) in der Fotografie ihr Medium, um Menschen und Geschehen im München der Nachkriegszeit festzuhalten. Barbara Niggl Radloffs frühe Karriere als Bildjournalistin und ihre intensive Auseinandersetzung mit dem Künstlerporträt haben zu einem beeindruckenden Œuvre geführt. Der Nachlass der Fotografin gelangte 2018 als Schenkung der Familie Radloff in die Sammlung Fotografie des Münchner Stadtmuseums und umfasst über 2.500 Abzüge sowie das Negativ-Archiv der Fotografin mit insgesamt mehr als 50.000 Aufnahmen. Obwohl ihr Werk in der deutschen Fotografie nach 1945 eine besondere Stellung einnimmt, ist es bis heute weitgehend unbekannt geblieben. Im Rahmen einer großen Retrospektive präsentiert das Münchner Stadtmuseum dieses Werk nun erstmals der Öffentlichkeit.

Franz Carl Heimito, Ritter von Doderer; known as Heimito von Doderer (5 September 1896, Weidlingau (now part of Hadersdorf-Weidlingau, Penzing, the 14th District of Vienna) – 23 December 1966, Vienna) was an Austrian writer.
Family
Heimito von Doderer was born in Weidlingau, since 1938 a part of Vienna, in a forester's lodge where his family stayed while his father, the architect and engineer Wilhelm Carl (Gustav), Ritter von Doderer (1854, Klosterbruck (Czech: Loucký klášter), Znaim – 1932, Vienna) worked on the regulation of the Wien River. The lodge is not preserved, today a memorial marks the site. Wilhelm Carl Doderer also worked on the construction of the Tauern Railway, the Kiel Canal and the Wiener Stadtbahn public transport network. His brother Richard (1876–1955) and his father Carl Wilhelm (Christian) Ritter von Doderer (1825, Heilbronn –1900, Vienna; ennobled in 1877) too were noted architects and industrialists. Carl Wilhelm's wife Maria von Greisinger (1835–1914) by her mother was related to the Austrian poet Nikolaus Lenau.
