In the Inner Hebrides on the west coast of Scotland
The Inner Hebrides surprise with green hills, fine sandy beaches and a mild climate, at least as far as Scottish conditions allow. This is ensured by the currents of the Gulf Stream, as well as the Scottish archipelago being protected by its sister islands, which belong to the Outer Hebrides. More than half of the almost 80 islands are uninhabited. Loneliness has made the people rather inventive.
On Tiree Island, mathematics, history and physics from the mainland arrive in the classroom per mouseclick. Dr Mauvis Gore and Prof. Rupert Ormond cast off from the island of Mull, after setting a course to encounter a basking shark. The cetohinus maximus is the world's second largest fish and the two scientists are absolutely convinced that the waters surrounding the Mull constitute the mating ...

The Hebrides: Land of Legends - Wildest Islands - Go Wild
Lying just off the coast of West Scotland, the Hebrides archipelago is made up of more than 500 islands and islets.
Isolation from the mainland has made it the perfect breeding ground for millions of creatures, making it home to some of the largest gatherings, and greatest spectacles on the planet.
Over 35,000 Grey seals choose one small beach to give birth and do battle for breeding rights. On other isles, some of the world’s largest gatherings of sea birds engulf precipitous cliffs in a bid to raise their young.
On the Isle of Rum, Britain’s largest land mammal, the red deer, prepares for the annual rut, while Golden eagles patrol the skies anticipating their next meal.
For thousands of years, people have battled with the Hebridean elements – even the Vikings struggled to survive. Th...

The Western Isles / The Outer Hebrides - 1941 British Council Film Collection - CharlieDeanArchives
The sinking of the 'Atlantic Queen' and the survival of its crew is supposedly based off a real series of events where the S.S. Richmond Castle was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean, and crewman Angus Murray led the survivors' return to the UK in a lifeboat. Curiously, however, the sinking of the S.S. Richmond Castle occurred in August 1942, after The Western Isles was released.
Severe bad weather hampered the initial filming of The Western Isles, and extra funding was required to account for this.
In December 1941, the Ministry of Information stated that The Western Isles should not be distributed abroad, as it was counteractive to war effort. The Minister of Information, Brendan Bracken, personally wrote to the British Council, claiming that the film was "living proof of Goebbels' statem...

On Tiree Island, mathematics, history and physics from the mainland arrive in the classroom per mouseclick. Dr Mauvis Gore and Prof. Rupert Ormond cast off from the island of Mull, after setting a course to encounter a basking shark. The cetohinus maximus is the world's second largest fish and the two scientists are absolutely convinced that the waters surrounding the Mull constitute the mating grounds for the basking sharks.
A logistical challenge takes place on the Isle of Easdale each September. Then, around 400 people populate the tiny slate island. Donals "Mellon" Melville organises the World Skimming Championships, a World Cup in jumping stones. This is all about the distance they are thrown and they must only hop above the water twice.

For thousands of years, people have battled with the Hebridean elements – even the Vikings struggled to survive. The surrounding seas are some of the most treacherous on the planet and the roar from the world’s third largest whirlpool can be heard up to 16 kilometres away.
Stories of mermaids, giants and troll-like creatures litter the island’s shores, and evidence of recently abandoned communities adds more myth and legend to these mysterious lands.

The sinking of the 'Atlantic Queen' and the survival of its crew is supposedly based off a real series of events where the S.S. Richmond Castle was torpedoed in the
Atlantic Ocean, and crewman Angus Murray led the survivors' return to the UK in a lifeboat.
The Minister of Information, Brendan Bracken, personally wrote to the British Council, claiming that the film was "living proof of Goebbels' statements that the British are frivolous, or that they are fighting the war to perpetuate a way of living long since outmoded, or that they have lost the intellectual, moral and industrial lead which they once held." The British Council distributed the film nonetheless.
The film also examines the story of Harris Tweed during World War Two.
This film has been made available by the British Council Film Collection for non-commercial research and educational purposes . . The British Council Film Collection consists of 120 short documentaries made by the British Council during the 1940s designed to show the world how Britain lived, worked and played.
