Headington Hill Hall stands on Headington Hill in the east of Oxford, England. It was built in 1824 for the Morrell family, local brewers, and was extended between 1856 and 1858, by James Morrell Jr. (1810–1863) who built an Italianate mansion, designed by architect John Thomas. The family remained in residence for 114 years.
Oscar Wilde attended an all-night fancy dress May Day Ball given by Mr and Mrs Herbert Morrell at the Hall on 1 May 1878 for around three hundred guests, gaudily dressed as Prince Rupert.Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873–1938), who owned the Hall for a period, was particularly associated as a hostess with the Bloomsbury Group.
Subsequently, the publisher Robert Maxwell (1923–1991), founder of Pergamon Press, leased the building from the Oxford City Council for 32 years. He described it as the "best council house in the country." During his time there, Maxwell commissioned a stained-glass window depicting Samson at the Gates of Gaza by Israeli sculptor Nehemia Azaz, which is a feature of the imperial staircase.

Hill Hall at Savannah State College, also known as Walter Bernard Hill Hall and built between 1900 and 1901 by students studying manual arts and blacksmithing, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. The building was named for Dr. Walter Barnard Hill.
History
Located on the campus of Savannah State University, the facility had a variety of uses since its initial construction including a bookstore, student center, male dormitory, and library. U.S. President William Howard Taft visited the building in 1912. Between 1914 and 1918, during World War I, the building served as a barracks facility for Black soldiers as they trained in Savannah.
Hill Hall was closed in 1996 following protests by students when the building, a dorm at the time, fell into disrepair. For nearly 20 years campus officials and community groups worked to raise money for restoration. The building was damaged by fire on May 8, 2000 as work crews were completing renovations. The building was reopened in 2008.

The house was originally built for Sir Thomas Smith during the reign of Elizabeth I to replace a 12th-century house on the same site. Construction was carried out over several intervals (1567-8, 1572-3) interspersed between Smith's stints as ambassador to France. The hall stands in 50 hectares (120 acres) of parkland designed by Humphrey Repton.
The Smith family remained in occupation until the mid 19th century. Hill Hall subsequently became a prisoner of war camp during World War 2 and later a women's prison until a fire in 1969. It has since become part of the Heritage Trust. Limited tours are available to see the internal period wall paintings described by Croft-Murray of the British Museum as the most important survival of Elizabethan decorative figure painting in England.

The site of Headington shows evidence of continued occupation from the Stone Age, as the 2001 field excavations in Barton Lane found, suggesting a date in the 11th century BC. Pottery was found on the Manor Ground, suggesting an Iron Age settlement there in the 7th century BC. Romankilns from about AD 300 have been found, including one now on display at the Museum of Oxford. Anglo-Saxon burial remains from about AD 500 have also been discovered.
