The Biggest Slag Explosion I Have EVER SEEN #shorts #science
A slag works is a type of industrial furnace where heating and melting are done to extract valuable metals from their ores. Hot flue gases produced by the burning of fuel are passed over a charged refractory hearth, from which metal oxides are converted into pure metals by a chemical reaction with the heated slag.
Slag is a by-product of smelting and refining metal. This video explores how slag formulates, what it's made of, how to contain it during a blast and precautions to take when using it in projects such as construction.

The First V- 8 engine EVER installed in a new Ford was designed and built in the Inland Empire.
If this little 110 year old shop building on Rialto in San Bernardino could talk, it has 1 story that is almost unbelievable.
.
Dale Gentry was the first Ford dealer in the Inland Empire. He hired a new mechanic who had a great idea, Since the 22 HP model T engine was pathetic at best, Martin suggested to Dale adding an extra 4 cylinders. Dale loved the idea, and in 1917 the built the first 2and installed 1 it in a new Model T as a $175 add on, and it sold immediately. The word got out so they decided to do a run of 20-30 of them and they were off to the races – they thought.
.
Apparently, Dale was the type of guy who went by the axiom that forgiveness was easier to obtain than permission. He was wrong. Ford soon found out about their renegade dealer in San Bernardino and sent out a...

Steel Manufacturing Process: Coal & Coke
Coal is a mineral consisting mainly of sedimentary fossilized carbon with smaller amounts of other elements, such as sulfur, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and more. Coal is found under the earth crust as lignite, or brown coal — the lowest ranking coal, bituminous coals and anthracite. It is extracted either from underground by shaft mining or at ground level by open-pit mining.
Coal is the largest source of energy for the generation of electricity worldwide and is also used in the production of metallurgical coke as blast furnace fuel. Some smaller blast furnaces can utilize charcoal as a carbon source, but the larger blast furnaces require the strength and durability of coke.
Coke is produced by igniting bituminous coal under reduced oxygen conditions in oven batteries specially designed ...

Additional information from email correspondence with Robert Magill on March 8, 2016:
The Thompson is a ‘sorts (individual piece of type)’ machine – i.e. it makes a long line of one character at a time of each character that is needed. The type is placed in type cases for later hand composition. The Thompson, in the twentieth century was manufactured by the Monotype Corporation.
Monotype also made a sorts caster called an Orphan Anne – much bigger and more complicated than the Thompson. It was developed from the same machine body as the Monotype Composition machine. I also have one of these in the barn, not yet working.
The Monotype Composition caster also casts individual letters, but they are casted in the order of the text that will be printed, so you get out of the machine lines of text ready to print – the type lines may be broken down after printing into a type case for hand composition, but this was not frequently done as the type was usually melted down for reuse in the machine. You are correct that the Monotype Composition Caster was coupled with a keyboard that made paper tapes, representing the text for printing, that were transferred to the caster to produce the type. This keyboard was very complicated as it represented the type and spacing for the lines and also calculated the line lengths to get fully justified lines as usually seen in books.
The Iron Hand Press is an Ostrander-Seymour Extra Heavy.
The large platen is a Golding Jobber 12 X 18,
And the smaller press is a Golding Pearl 7 X 11.

Apparently, Dale was the type of guy who went by the axiom that forgiveness was easier to obtain than permission. He was wrong. Ford soon found out about their renegade dealer in San Bernardino and sent out a group to investigate. I guess Henry Ford did not like people messing with his design, because they made him an offer he could not refuse. Quit making them or lose his dealership, and gain the wrath of the Ford Motor Company. So he gave up his flathead V-8 but the relationship was strained beyond repair. Dale started selling a better aftermarket battery and was installing them in the cars he was selling, so the Ford execs got their panties in a bunch and revoked his dealership. Ford did not even a V-8 for another 10 years.
.
Dale went on to do quite well. I will cover some of other ventures his ventures in later episodes.

Coke is produced by igniting bituminous coal under reduced oxygen conditions in oven batteries specially designed for this process. The coking process generates the following main volatiles as byproducts: coke oven gas, tar, ammonium sulfate, benzol, toluol and naphtha.
A coke battery is made up of multiple ovens. Coal is crushed and blended prior to being charged in a coke oven. A larry car charges the individual oven with the blended coal. In the coke oven, the coal is heated to 1,800°F for up to 18 hours. During that time, the volatiles of the coal are driven into the offgas and a pure carbon form called “coke” remains. The coke, when exposed to oxygen, will immediately ignite and begin to burn. When the coke is pushed from the oven into a railcar, it is quickly quenched to cool the coke and stop the burning process. The cooled coke is then dumped onto a coal wharf where it is taken to a facility to be screened and sized prior to being charged into the blast furnace.
