Is Little John Really Buried Here? Hathersage And Chatsworth Farm Shop
Thankyou for watching my video, it's been a busy week for me as we are nearing the end of the school year meaning I had to steal a little time to Vlog so I visited a the beautiful Hathersage a small village not too far away from my home. Hathersage is supposedly the resting place of Little John one of Robin Hoods Merry Men. Also a favourite of the novelist Charlotte Bronte who was inspired by the village for her novel Jane Eyre.
I thought I would also take you on a little shopping trip to Chatsworth Farm Shop but made a bit of a balls up trying to film the footage on my mobile, Yet another rookie error, will I ever learn.

Hathersage - Peak District Villages
http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk Village Guide - Hathersage is one of Derbyshire's most popular tourist villages, but it has far more to commend it than just ancient legend and literary fiction, for it is an attractive, prosperous and busy gritstone hill village of charm and character, perched rather picturesquely on a hillside between the soaring Stanage Edge which fills the horizon to the east, and the Derwent Valley far below to the south and west. It lies equidistant between Buxton and Sheffield on the main A625 within the Peak National Park and is part of the so-called Sheffield Commuter Belt which includes Grindleford, Calver, Froggat, and others along the Derwent Valley. At Domesday the Manor of "˜Hereseige', meaning "˜ridge settlement', was held by "˜Lavenot and Levric with two...

Fanny and Clara is next where you can nip in to get yourself done up and looking your best!
At the eastern end of the Hope Valley is Hathersage, a large busy village with rich historical, industrial and literary associations.
Hathersage has become a popular place to visit for those in search of legendary heroes and literary heroines. By the south door of the church of St Michael is the grave of Robin Hood's lieutenant, Little John, who was reputedly born in Hathersage. Near the village other associated sites with the outlaw are Robin Hood's Cave, Well and Stoop. Charlotte Bronte has closec onnections with the village and it is said to be featured it in her novels. North Lees Hall is thought to have been the model for Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre.
Hathersage was once an important centre for the manufacture of millstones, needles and pins. There are some outstanding areas of natural beauty surrounding the village, including Stanage and Burbage Edges, Offerton and Abney Moor and Bretton Clough. The river Derwent passes just south of the village at Leadmill, where there is a picturesque bridge an old country inn.
Things to do; A popular base for exploring the Hope Valley, either on foot or by vehicle, there is plenty to see and do here. Outdoor enthusiasts can walk, cycle, climb, ride and even fly nearby. Some fine old country houses like Offerton, Highlow, and Hazelford Halls are set in the spectacular countryside surrounding the village.
The Derwent Valley Heritage Trail runs close by the village. With a wealth of facilities including shops selling local crafts, foods, plants, clothing and outdoors equipment and good hotels, pubs, cafes and restaurants, it is a busy village.
Leisure facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, open during the summer, tennis courts, bowling green and a fitness and health centre. Just out of the village in the unusual Round Building is a small factory making specialist cutlery, where tours are often available and there is also a factory shop. There is a good selection of accommodation for visitors in hotels, inns, guesthouses, holiday cottages and campsites in and around the village, where there is also a popular Youth Hostel.
The village has an annual carnival in July and a Horticultural Show in August. There are regular performances, including a pantomime, by the local amateur dramatic society the Hathersage Players, and occasional concerts by the village choral society and silver band are held in the church.

Hathersage is a pretty place set in the peak district and we returned to film another walking tour around this beautiful countryside tourist destination.
Situated in the spectacular Hope Valley and surrounded on all sides by wooded hillsides and magnificent gritstone edges, the pretty village of Hathersage is an absolute gem! With beautiful old stone buildings lining the streets, and a collection of vibrant shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants, it’s no wonder that Hathersage is one of the most popular villages in this part of the Peak District National Park.
Particularly popular with lovers of outdoor activities. It’s a great base for exploring Stanage Edge, a gritstone escarpment just north of the village that stretches for almost 4 miles and is famous as a location for climbing. The many moorland and fell trails that start from the edge of the village also offer wonderful routes for running, cycling and hiking.
The village has a rich and interesting history. Evidence points to human occupation below Stanage Edge since the Mesolithic or Middle Stone Age, and Bronze Age field systems and a burial cairn can still be seen in the area around Dennis Knoll.
Hathersage was already an established settlement at the time of its recording in the Domesday Book of 1086. Parts of the beautiful village church of St Michael and All Angels date from the late 1300s.
Hathersage has a number of famous connections too. In the village churchyard visitors can see the reputed grave of Little John, one of Robin Hood’s Merry Men, and supposedly once a resident of Hathersage.
There are a number of other connections with Robin Hood in the surrounding area, including Robin Hood’s Cave on Stanage Edge, Robin Hood’s Stoop on Offerton Moor, Robin Hood’s Cross on Abney Moor, and Hood Brook running out of the village, suggesting that there have long been local links to this popular folk hero.
Hathersage also has strong connections with Charlotte Bronte, who stayed at the vicarage in the village in 1845. Many of the locations in her most famous novel ‘Jane Eyre’ were based on locations in and around Hathersage. Hathersage itself is mentioned in the book as the village of Morton, and The George Hotel in Hathersage was also referred to directly as ‘The George Inn’ in the novel. Mr Rochester’s ‘Thornfield Hall’ is widely accepted to be North Lees Hall, on the outskirts of the village.
Today, Hathersage is a busy, thriving community. Tourists visit from far and wide, not only for the outdoor adventures and beautiful scenery but also for the many shops, cafés, restaurants and pubs. There’s also an acclaimed outdoor swimming pool in Hathersage which has been open since 1936, where you can swim and look up at the hills all around you!
Hathersage, right in the heart of the Peak District National Park, was the only place in Derbyshire to make the list of best places to live, with the judges commenting on the "spectacular hills and valleys"
The Bronte family lived in Hathersage. At the time of Bronte's visits to the Hathersage area, the Eyre family were living at North Lees. They lived there from 1750 until 1882, as well as occupying the hall for two generations during the 15th Century.
Hathersage churchyard is most famous for the grave of Little John, Robin Hood's giant righthand man (above). Local legend claims Little John's bow, hat and mail shirt once hung inside the church. There's been a church here for at least 1,000 years.

http://www.peakdistrictonline.co.uk Village Guide - Hathersage is one of Derbyshire's most popular tourist villages, but it has far more to commend it than just ancient legend and literary fiction, for it is an attractive, prosperous and busy gritstone hill village of charm and character, perched rather picturesquely on a hillside between the soaring Stanage Edge which fills the horizon to the east, and the Derwent Valley far below to the south and west. It lies equidistant between Buxton and Sheffield on the main A625 within the Peak National Park and is part of the so-called Sheffield Commuter Belt which includes Grindleford, Calver, Froggat, and others along the Derwent Valley. At Domesday the Manor of "˜Hereseige', meaning "˜ridge settlement', was held by "˜Lavenot and Levric with two carucates of land' and was built around an ancient stronghold and sacred pagan site on the hill now occupied by St. Michael's Church.
