Harry Bennett (1892–1979), a former boxer and ex-Navy sailor, was an executive at Ford Motor Company during the 1930s and 1940s. He was best known as the head of Ford’s Service Department, or Internal Security. While working for Ford, his union busting tactics, of which The Battle of the Overpass was a prime example, made him a foe of the United Auto Workers. He was fired in 1945 by Henry Ford II, and died in Los Gatos, CA on Jan. 4, 1979 of an undisclosed cause. He had various residences in Michigan, including Bennett's Lodge near Farwell, a log cabin style house in East Tawas, and Bennett's Castle located on the Huron River in Ypsilanti.
Background
In the early days of Ford Motor Company there existed a security department of sorts called the Ford Service Department. The job of the Service Department was to deal with the growing labor unrest and the labor unions that were starting to form. Ford had instituted a policy called "speed up" by which the speed of the assembly lines was increased slightly every week and employees were feeling the strain.
Harry Scott Bennett (1 June 1877 – 24 May 1959), originally Henry Gilbert Scott Bennett, was an Australian socialist speaker and organiser. He was born in Chilwell, Victoria and died in Sydney.

As Henry Ford neared his 70th birthday in 1930, he decided that his only son Edsel wasn't tough enough to take over the Ford Motor Company so he brought in some muscle to help do battle with the company's workers , competitors, Communists. unionists
The muscle was a man named Harry Bennett.
Bennett was put in charge of the Service Department which really meant he was in charge of plant security. In short order, Bennett -- with Ford's backing -- began to wield great power
At one time, the Ford Motor Company had 100,000 workers at its River Rouge assembly plant. The economy of the city of Dearborn Michigan was dependent on the company, and this gave Bennett tremendous clout with political leaders and police officials.
The Boss of the Detroit Family, Gaspar Milazzo had been gunned down as part of the Castellamarese War.
Ford told Bennett to contact the Cosa Nostra powers in Detroit to try to bring this problem to a close.
Bennett met the new Detroit boss, Chet La Mare, who impressed Bennett as the man to deal with
Bennett awarded La Mare a Ford dealership and the valuable fruit concession at the River Rouge plant.
Whatever promise La Mare made, he never delivered. He was murdered in 1931. Bennett was still eager to have tough mobsters on his side so he got the Dearborn police chief to introduce him to Detroit mobster Tony D'Anna. Bennett granted D'Anna a Ford dealership and the lucrative exclusive contracts to haul Ford cars from the River Rouge and Highland Park plants. D'Anna would keep these contracts for at least 20 years.
In 1932, Bennett blessed another gangster powerful New York mobster Giuseppe (Joe Adonis) Doto, who controlled the The Automotive Conveying Company. The company was awarded exclusive rights to haul transport cars from the Edgewater, NJ plant.
Bennett also hired gangster Peter Licavoli men to work as security guards for the Ford Company. Once in the door, Licavoli wanted more and demanded that the men receive raises of $9 an hour. Bennett made a serious mistake and fired the whole lot of them. A short while later, Bennett was run off the road and nearly killed.
He turned to Joe Adonis for protection, and got it. A few years later Edsel Ford died and was replaced by his son, Henry Ford II. He promptly fired the controversial Bennett but both Doto and D'Anna kept their lucrative hauling contracts. In 1951, Doto was hauled before the Kefauver Senate Committee which was investigating organized crime. He "sold" his business to another gangster, Charlie Chiri. By 1956, Doto had been deported to Italy and it is not clear if he kept a piece of the car hauling business.

Henry Ford's SECRET Hatchet Man Harry Bennett | A Classic Car Documentary
In 1916, Henry Ford was in New York City for a meeting, when he was introduced to a man who had been involved in a street fight. It was a naval officer who had easily beat some local street thugs. Standing before the great Henry Ford, the naval officer worried about how poorly his actions reflected on his military ranking, concerned he’d be dishonorably discharged, however Henry Ford did just the opposite. He offered this naval officer a job. His name was Harry Bennett, and for the next 30 years, he was Henry Ford’s muscleman, living in the shadows as Ford’s ‘fixer’. When there was a scuffle on the assembly line, Bennett made the problem go away. When there was a potential union labor organization with united auto workers, Bennett ‘solved’ the problem.
Bennett reported personally and only to Henry Ford every day, meeting regularly in the Ford family home. Henry Ford trusted Bennett so much, that when the time came to step down at Ford Motors, Henry Ford wanted Bennett to be his replacement, causing Henry Ford’s wife Clara to threaten him with divorce. This is the true, and unbelievable story, of Harry Bennett, Henry Ford’s right-hand man.

Step into history with a discussion on Harry Bennett, one of the most infamous employees in Ford Motor Company history and Henry Ford’s best friend. Harry Bennett rose through the ranks of the Ford Motor Company from an artist to head of employment by winning over Henry Ford with his rough attitude and criminal dealings. Learn about Bennett’s reign of terror in Ford Motor and battles with the Ford family over control of the company. Watch to learn about this career criminal and his rise and fall in the Ford Motor Company from our Lead Historian Chase Galewski.
PM Magazine hosted Todd Hissong featured a story on Harry Bennett's Castle just outside Ypsilanti, MI in 1984. For the first time a camera takes us inside the walls of the Castle.

In this video, we take a look at the life and career of Harry Bennett. Bennett was fired from Ford Motors after he was caught taking bribes to winconstruction contracts. After his scandal, Bennett went on to write a memoir and documentary about his life and career.

He then retired to an 800 acre estate in Wilderness Area he owned near Desert Springs California, but then his past came back to haunt him. In 1951 the contracts to haul cars across state line that he had given to the crime family fell under federal investigation and Harry was called to testify on his knowledge on charges of racketeering this was the last time he was ever seen publicly he later published his Memoirs on his life at four Motors and then retreated to a private life of obscurity out of the spotlight for many years until he turned 80 when he suffered a stroke the last six years of his life were spent at a nursing home in Los Gatos California and on January 4th 1979 he died his death went unreported for a week and the coroner refused to release information about his death
