Harrogate International Festivals (HIF) is Yorkshire's longest running arts festival and a registered charity that puts on festivals and events supported by a year-round programme of arts and cultural activities for young people and communities across the north of England. Festivals include the Harrogate Festival, Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, Harrogate International Spring Series, Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival, Harrogate History Festival and a programme of outreach and new programmes under the banner of HIF+ including the Spiegeltent and Children’s Festival programmes.
HIF also runs a broad programme of community outreach under the HIF+ programme including literacy, music and arts programmes for young people and communities with least access to the arts due to rural isolation, geographical location or social exclusion.
History
The Harrogate International Festival was set up in response to local demand to re-establish the quality of event that people had been used to between the wars in the town’s spa heyday. In 1966, with the help of composer Benjamin Britten and singer Peter Pears of Aldeburgh Festival fame, and financial support from Harrogate Borough Council and the Arts Council of England, Clive Wilson launched the Festival and became its first Director.
In artistic terms the Festival has changed radically from its origins in the late sixties.
The Festival dates (originally in mid-August) were chosen as they had to fit into the town’s conference & exhibition calendar (the summer gap after Gift Fair and before Carpet Fair).
In its early days the Festival featured music, literature, drama, visual arts and science. However, over the following decades music came to the fore, making up around 90% of the programme.
Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire, England. Historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the town is a tourist destination and its visitor attractions include its spa waters and RHS Harlow Carr gardens. Nearby is the Yorkshire Dalesnational park and the Nidderdale AONB. Harrogate grew out of two smaller settlements, High Harrogate and Low Harrogate, in the 17th century. Since 2013, polls have consistently voted the town as "the happiest place to live" in Britain. In 2013 Harrogate was declared to be the third most romantic destination in the world, beating off rivals including Paris, Rome and Vienna.
Harrogate spa water contains iron, sulphur and common salt. The town became known as 'The English Spa' in the Georgian Era, after its waters were discovered in the 16th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries its 'chalybeate' waters (containing iron) were a popular health treatment, and the influx of wealthy but sickly visitors contributed significantly to the wealth of the town.
1950-1983: The Municipal Borough of Harrogate, the Urban District of Knaresborough, and part of the Rural District of Nidderdale.
1983-1997: The Borough of Harrogate wards of Bilton, Claro, Duchy, East Central, Granby, Harlow, Knaresborough East, Knaresborough West, Marston Moor, Nether Poppleton, New Park, Ouseburn, Pannal, Spofforth, Starbeck, Upper Poppleton, Wedderburn, and West Central.

Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire. This elegant town showcases some Georgian style architecture and beautiful gardens.
A day trip to Harrogate would be incomplete without a visit to Betty's Cafe, which just marked its 100 year anniversary.
