Harrison Dillard
William Harrison "Bones" Dillard (born July 8, 1923) is an American former track and field athlete, the only male so far to win Olympic titles in both sprinting and hurdling events.
Early career
Dillard was born in Cleveland, Ohio, attended East Technical High School. He entered Baldwin-Wallace College in 1941 and joined Pi Lambda Phi International Fraternity, and two years later was drafted into the Army serving in the all-black 92nd Infantry Division known as the Buffalo Soldiers. He returned to college in 1946 and resumed athletics, to which he had been inspired by Jesse Owens, who was also from Cleveland and had attended East Technical High School as well. He won the NCAA and AAU 120-yard and 220-yard hurdles in both 1946 and 1947 and he tied world records in both events with a 22.3 in the 220 in 1946 and a 13.6 in the 120.

At the trials for the 1948 Summer Olympics, however, Dillard failed to qualify for the 110 m hurdles event, though he qualified as third (and last) for the 100 m, not his specialty.

1948 Summer Olympics
The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event which was held in London, England, United Kingdom. After a 12-year hiatus because of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics since the 1936 Games in Berlin. The 1940 Games had been scheduled for Tokyo, and then for Helsinki; the 1944 Games had been provisionally planned for London. This was the second occasion that London had hosted the Olympic Games, having previously been the venue in 1908. The Olympics again returned to London in 2012, making it the only city to host the games three times.
The event came to be known as the Austerity Games, because of the economic climate and post-war rationing. No new venues were built for the games, and athletes were housed in existing accommodation instead of an Olympic Village as were the 1936 Games and the subsequent 1952 Games. A record 59 nations were represented by 4,104 athletes, 3,714 men and 390 women, in 19 sport disciplines. Germany and Japan were refused permission to participate; the USSR was invited but chose not to send any athletes. The United States team won the most total medals, 84, and the most gold medals, 38. The host nation won 23 medals, three of them gold.

Banks (singer)
Jillian Rose Banks (born June 16, 1988), known simply as Banks (often stylized as BANKS), is an American singer and songwriter from Orange County, California. She releases music under Harvest Records, Good Years Recordings and IAMSOUND Records imprints of the major label Universal Music Group.
She has toured internationally with The Weeknd and was also nominated for the Sound of 2014 award by the BBC and an MTV Brand New Nominee in 2014. On May 3, 2014, Banks was dubbed as an "Artist to Watch" by FoxWeekly.
Early life
Jillian Rose Banks was born in Orange County, California. Banks started writing songs at the age of fifteen. She taught herself piano when she received a keyboard from a friend to help her through her parents' divorce. She says she "felt very alone and helpless. I didn't know how to express what I was feeling or who to talk to."
Career
2013–present: Breakthrough and Goddess
Banks used the audio distribution website SoundCloud to put out her music before securing a record deal. Her friend Lily Collins used her contacts to pass along her music to people in the industry; specifically Katy Perry's DJ Yung Skeeter, and she began working with the label Good Years Recordings. Her first official single, called "Before I Ever Met You" was released in February 2013. The song which had been on a private SoundCloud page ended up being played by BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe. Banks released her first EP Fall Over by IAMSOUND Records and Good Years Recordings.Billboard called her a "magnetic writer with songs to obsess over." Banks released her second EP called London by Harvest Records and Good Years Recordings in 2013 to positive reviews from music critics, receiving a 78 from Metacritic. Her song "Waiting Game" from the EP was featured in the 2013 Victoria's Secret holiday commercial.

London, Ontario
London is a Canadian city located in Southwestern Ontario along the Quebec City–Windsor Corridor. The city has a population of 366,151 according to the 2011 Canadian census. London is at the confluence of the non-navigable Thames River, approximately halfway between Toronto, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan. The City of London is a separated municipality, politically separate from Middlesex County, though it remains the county seat.
London and the Thames were named in 1793 by Lord Simcoe, who proposed the site for the capital of Upper Canada. The first European settlement was between 1801 and 1804 by Peter Hagerman. The village was founded in 1826 and incorporated in 1855. Since then, London has grown to be the largest Southwestern Ontario municipality and Canada's 11th largest municipality, having annexed many of the smaller communities that surrounded it.
London is a regional centre of health care and education, being home to the University of Western Ontario, Fanshawe College, and several hospitals. The city hosts a number of musical and artistic exhibits and festivals, which contribute to its tourism industry, but its economic activity is centred on education, medical research, insurance, and information technology. London's university and hospitals are among its top ten employers. London lies at the junction of Highway 401 and 402, connecting it to Toronto, Windsor, and Sarnia. Dickens' London
Charles Dickens' works are especially associated with London which is the setting for many of his novels. These works do not just use London as a backdrop but are about the city and its character.
Dickens described London as a Magic lantern, a popular entertainment of the Victorian era, which projected images from slides. Of all Dickens' characters 'none played as important a role in his work as that of London itself', it fired his imagination and made him write. In a letter to John Forster, in 1846, Dickens wrote 'a day in London sets me up and starts me', but outside of the city, 'the toil and labour of writing, day after day, without that magic lantern is IMMENSE!!'
However, of the identifiable London locations that Dickens used in his work, scholar Clare Pettitt notes that many no longer exist, and, while 'you can track Dickens' London, and see where things were, but they aren't necessarily still there'.
In addition to his later novels and short stories, Dickens' descriptions of London, published in various newspapers in the 1830s, were released as a collected edition Sketches by Boz in 1836.

Harrison Dillard, Mel Patton, Barney Ewell and Lorenzo Wright lead the USA 4x100m relay team to gold in these classic highlights from the London 1948 Olympic Games.
The 4x100 metres relay is one of the most expected team events in the Athletics competition at the Olympic Games. At the London 1948 Games it was no different.
The American team was the strong favourite with three athletes had won (or would win) medals in other events in London. Gold medallists Harrison Dillard and Mel Patton - on the 100 and 200 metres respectively - and Barney Ewell silver medallists in both sprint events. Lorenzo Wright, who competed in the long jump event, completed the team.
In an exciting race, the British team could not keep up to the strong American team, but still managed to take second place followed closely by the Italian team.
Initially there was dispute over a possible disqualification of the USA for an alleged faulty change-over, but the disqualification did not stand and the Americans were officially proclaimed Olympic champions.

In the race, Dillard won gold in an incredibly tight photo-finish at the line. Harrison Dillard began hurdling at the age of eight, running in an alley and using the springs from abandoned car seats as barriers. During 1947 and 1948, Dillard won 82 straight races. However, in the final of the 110m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials, he lost his stride and failed to finish. Fortunately, he had already qualified in the 100m dash. The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was held in London, United Kingdom from 29 July to 14 August 1948.
Following a twelve-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 Games in Berlin. The 1940 Olympic Games had been scheduled for Tokyo, and then for Helsinki; the 1944 Olympic Games had been provisionally planned for London. This was the second occasion that London had hosted the Olympic Games, having previously hosted them in 1908, forty years earlier. The Olympics would again return to London 64 years later in 2012, making London the first city to have hosted the games three times, and the only such city until Paris and Los Angeles host their third games in 2024 and 2028, respectively. The 1948 Olympic Games were the first of two summer Olympic Games held under the IOC presidency of Sigfrid Edström.
The event came to be known as the Austerity Games, because of the difficult economic climate and rationing imposed in the aftermath of World War II. No new venues were built for the games (with events taking place mainly at Empire Stadium and the Empire Pool at Wembley Park), and athletes were housed in existing accommodation at the Wembley area instead of an Olympic Village, as were the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and the subsequent 1952 Games in Helsinki. A record 59 nations were represented by 4,104 athletes, 3,714 men and 390 women, in 19 sport disciplines. Germany and Japan were not invited to participate in the games; the Soviet Union was invited but chose not to send any athletes, sending observers instead to prepare for the 1952 Olympics.
One of the star performers at the Games was Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen. Dubbed "The Flying Housewife", the thirty-year-old mother of two won four gold medals in athletics. In the decathlon, American Bob Mathias became the youngest male ever to win an Olympic gold medal at the age of seventeen. The most individual medals were won by Veikko Huhtanen of Finland who took three golds, a silver and a bronze in men's gymnastics. The United States won the most gold and overall medals, having 300 athletes compared to Britain's 404. France fielded the second largest team, with 316 athletes and finished third in the medal standings. The host nation ended up twelfth.

Tiny Desk Concerts often require creative and logistical transformations, from electric bands going acoustic to big bands squashing into a tiny space to many players gathering around a single microphone. But the setting is particularly challenging for vocalists, especially those accustomed to heavy production, effects or — in the case of recent guest T-Pain — generous dollops of Auto-Tune.
T-Pain's effects-less set grabbed more attention at the time, given the extent to which digital alterations are expected of him, but this performance by Banks is, in its own way, an even greater high-wire act. Banks' terrific full-length debut, Goddess, is constructed out of layer upon layer of electronics, beats, samples and other means of submerging the singer's voice in swirling accoutrements. With assistance from keyboardist/guitarist John Anderson and percussionist Derek Taylor, she's not all alone behind the Tiny Desk, but her expressive voice is fully exposed here.
Kicking off her three-song set with "Beggin For Thread," Banks sets the scene in vulnerable, breathily seething fashion before opening the throttle in her choruses. On record, she's placed at the center of lavish productions, each suitable for throbbing remixes and banks of swirling lights. Although failing to qualify for the 110m hurdles Harrison Dillard had done enough already to compete in the men's 100m sprint at the London 1948 Olympic Games.
In the race, Dillard won gold in an incredibly tight photo-finish at the line.
Harrison Dillard began hurdling at the age of eight, running in an alley and using the springs from abandoned car seats as barriers. During 1947 and 1948, Dillard won 82 straight races. However, in the final of the 110m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials, he lost his stride and failed to finish.
Fortunately, he had already qualified in the 100m dash. At the Olympic Games in London in 1948, Dillard edged teammate Barney Ewell for the gold medal. He won a second gold medal in the 4x100m relay.

Classic highlights from the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games as the USA's Harrison Dillard wins the gold medal in the men's 110m hurdles event with his compatriots completing the medalists.
Harrison Dillard won two Olympic medals at the London 1948 Olympic Games in the men's 100m and the 4x100m men's relay. But Dillard still wanted to win an Olympic hurdles championship.
Four years later, the 29-year-old Dillard got his chance in Helsinki. He was hard-pressed by fellow American Jack Davis, but he surged ahead at the end and crossed the finish line first.
The usually calm Dillard leaped for joy and exclaimed, "Good things come to those who wait." Dillard won another gold medal in the relay to bring his career total to four.

Known affectionately as “Bones” due to his slight build, Harrison Dillard joined a fellow high school alum in being a legend in track & field. Stories tell that Dillard was encouraged by Jesse Owens – another graduate of Cleveland’s East Technical High school – with returning to college following serving in World War II.
Dillard indeed returned to Baldwin Wallace – in a way rarely seen, winning NCAA titles in the 120-yard and 220-yard hurdles in 1946 and 1947, becoming the last athlete with such a double-double.
A potential triple-triple for Dillard was cut short when he was ruled ineligible on the eve of the 1948 NCAA meet. His entire 1948 season seemed similarly doomed, when he failed to qualify in the 110 hurdles. Dillard, however, made the team in the 100 meters and won his first individual Olympic gold medal.

In 1948, [Harrison Dillard] had been a huge favorite until he faltered in the US Olympic Trials, hitting a hurdle and not finishing the final. He had then entered the 100 metres, made the team in that event and won the gold medal. He continued hurdling and was still considered the best in the world. The world record holder was Dick Attlesey (USA), but he hurt his foot in the heats of the US Olympic Trials, and did not make the team. But led by Dillard, the Americans again swept the medals, as they had in 1948. The finish was close between Dillard and [Jack Davis], Davis having been slowed by a poor start, likely due to being charged with a false start.

Harrison Dillard, Mel Patton, Barney Ewell and Lorenzo Wright lead the USA 4x100m relay team to gold in these classic highlights from the London 1948 Olympic Games.
The 4x100 metres relay is one of the most expected team events in the Athletics competition at the Olympic Games. At the London 1948 Games it was no different.
The American team was the strong favourite with three athletes had won (or would win) medals in other events in London. Gold medallists Harrison Dillard and Mel Patton - on the 100 and 200 metres respectively - and Barney Ewell silver medallists in both sprint events. Lorenzo Wright, who competed in the long jump event, completed the team.
In an exciting race, the British team could not keep up to the strong American team, but still managed to take second place followed closely by the Italian team.
Initially there was dispute over a possible disqualification of the USA for an alleged faulty change-over, but the disqualification did not stand and the Americans were officially proclaimed Olympic champions.

Harrison Dillard
William Harrison "Bones" Dillard (born July 8, 1923) is an American former track and field athlete, the only male so far to win Olympic titles in both sprinting and hurdling events.
Early career
Dillard was born in Cleveland, Ohio, attended East Technical High School. He entered Baldwin-Wallace College in 1941 and joined Pi Lambda Phi International Fraternity, and two years later was drafted into the Army serving in the all-black 92nd Infantry Division known as the Buffalo Soldiers. He returned to college in 1946 and resumed athletics, to which he had been inspired by Jesse Owens, who was also from Cleveland and had attended East Technical High School as well. He won the NCAA and AAU 120-yard and 220-yard hurdles in both 1946 and 1947 and he tied world records in both events with a 22.3 in the 220 in 1946 and a 13.6 in the 120.
Olympic Games
At the trials for the 1948 Summer Olympics, however, Dillard failed to qualify for the 110 m hurdles event, though he qualified as third (and last) for the 100 m, not his specialty.

Games of the XIV Olympiad
The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was held in London, United Kingdom from 29 July to 14 August 1948.
Following a twelve-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 Games in Berlin. The 1940 Olympic Games had been scheduled for Tokyo, and then for Helsinki; the 1944 Olympic Games had been provisionally planned for London. This was the second occasion that London had hosted the Olympic Games, having previously hosted them in 1908, forty years earlier. The Olympics would again return to London 64 years later in 2012, making London the first city to have hosted the games three times, and the only such city until Paris and Los Angeles host their third games in 2024 and 2028, respectively. The 1948 Olympic Games were the first of two summer Olympic Games held under the IOC presidency of Sigfrid Edström.
The event came to be known as the Austerity Games, because of the difficult economic climate and rationing imposed in the aftermath of World War II. No new venues were built for the games (with events taking place mainly at Empire Stadium and the Empire Pool at Wembley Park), and athletes were housed in existing accommodation at the Wembley area instead of an Olympic Village, as were the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and the subsequent 1952 Games in Helsinki. A record 59 nations were represented by 4,104 athletes, 3,714 men and 390 women, in 19 sport disciplines. Germany and Japan were not invited to participate in the games; the Soviet Union was invited but chose not to send any athletes, sending observers instead to prepare for the 1952 Olympics.
One of the star performers at the Games was Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen. Dubbed "The Flying Housewife", the thirty-year-old mother of two won four gold medals in athletics. In the decathlon, American Bob Mathias became the youngest male ever to win an Olympic gold medal at the age of seventeen. The most individual medals were won by Veikko Huhtanen of Finland who took three golds, a silver and a bronze in men's gymnastics. The United States won the most gold and overall medals, having 300 athletes compared to Britain's 404. France fielded the second largest team, with 316 athletes and finished third in the medal standings. The host nation ended up twelfth.

Tiny Desk Concerts often require creative and logistical transformations, from electric bands going acoustic to big bands squashing into a tiny space to many players gathering around a single microphone. But the setting is particularly challenging for vocalists, especially those accustomed to heavy production, effects or — in the case of recent guest T-Pain — generous dollops of Auto-Tune.
T-Pain's effects-less set grabbed more attention at the time, given the extent to which digital alterations are expected of him, but this performance by Banks is, in its own way, an even greater high-wire act. Banks' terrific full-length debut, Goddess, is constructed out of layer upon layer of electronics, beats, samples and other means of submerging the singer's voice in swirling accoutrements. With assistance from keyboardist/guitarist John Anderson and percussionist Derek Taylor, she's not all alone behind the Tiny Desk, but her expressive voice is fully exposed here.
Kicking off her three-song set with "Beggin For Thread," Banks sets the scene in vulnerable, breathily seething fashion before opening the throttle in her choruses. On record, she's placed at the center of lavish productions, each suitable for throbbing remixes and banks of swirling lights. At the Tiny Desk, though, she serves notice that she's a powerful singer in her own right — and that heavy production needn't be the product of necessity. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Well here I am in Sheridan and it's 9 o'clock in the morning
and times a going fast
I just pulled 'er over had some coffee and a doughnut and I bought the
car a brand new tank of gas.
Well I don't know if I'm gonna make it's 9: 15, I'll be lucky if I ever get there
By God now what's that I hear is it a siren
Sure enough he got me on his radar
He pulled up behind me and turned on those flashing lights a sign that
I knew meant to pull her over
So I stomped on my brakes and as skidded to a halt I wiped out three
reflector posts along the shoulder.
He got out of his car and was a walkin' real slow, so I jumped out and
met him half way, He jerked out his gun and said "Mister are you crazy?
I ain't never seen nobody drive that way."
I told him take it easy and he could put up that cannon the way he's
shakin' it just might go off. He put up the gun as I explained my situation
he listened to my story and he coughed.
He wrote me out a ticket that seemed to take forever, I took it as I headed
for my car.
That cop he hollered out at me and said "Hey cowboy you better slow down
cause you can't outrun this radar"
As I rolled on down the road I was a cursin' and a swearin' about the
ticket that I had just acquired, I wondered if I oughtta pay it or throw
it out the window, hell I might just set the damn thing afire.
So I gunned it once again and was traveling down the highway
with the gas pedal mashed to the floor
When I came around a curve and right there in the highway there's
more damn sheep than I've ever seen before.
I'm going to fast to ever stop so I just close my eyes as the car rolls on through
the herd.
When I open up my eyes again there's a sheep on the fender, and
that herder's saying some mighty awful words.
The sweats a drippin' off my brow as I barrell through ole Wheatland
I'm a nervous wreck and I must be a sight, the flies inside this ole car
are buzzing all around me, guess my 24 hour deodorant quit last night.
60 50 40 30 20 miles more the rodeo starts in another 18 minutes
I pull in through the main gates I hear the anthem playin'
I can't believeit, thank God I finally made it.
There's only one more obstacle that's standing in my way, it's a
nit wit with a weekend badge. He's standing by the gate and as I
slide her to a halt he says "Where in the hell you going so doggone fast?"
I tell him that I'm entered and I ain't got time to talk, my horse is in the
chute and I'm late. He says I need to get a pass from the secretary
my eyes get red my heart fills up with hate.
I yell you dirty so and so you better let me through, he asked if I'd repeat
that once again, so I whacked him in the mouth and I left him lying there
on his back kicking in the sand.
I got there just in time to see my bronc come runnin out his head and tail
held way up high I swear he looked right straight at me, grinned and
gave a horse laugh, and me I just stood there and cried.
I stood there feelin' helpless and purely dumbfounded, I looked and what did
I see three highway patrolmen and a gateman with a fat lip and they were
all a lookin' back at me
Sittin' in this cell now I've done a lot of thinkin' about that
wild ride I made a month ago, I'm sorry that I'm in this rotten situation
If I could do it again I wouldn't have drove so slow,
