Classic highlights from the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games as the USA's Harrison Dillard wins the gold medal in the men's 110m hurdles event with his compatriots completing the medalists.
Harrison Dillard won two Olympic medals at the London 1948 Olympic Games in the men's 100m and the 4x100m men's relay. But Dillard still wanted to win an Olympic hurdles championship.
Four years later, the 29-year-old Dillard got his chance in Helsinki. He was hard-pressed by fellow American Jack Davis, but he surged ahead at the end and crossed the finish line first.
The usually calm Dillard leaped for joy and exclaimed, "Good things come to those who wait." Dillard won another gold medal in the relay to bring his career total to four.

Harrison Dillard - Collegiate Athlete Hall of Fame 2022 Inductee
Known affectionately as “Bones” due to his slight build, Harrison Dillard joined a fellow high school alum in being a legend in track & field. Stories tell that Dillard was encouraged by Jesse Owens – another graduate of Cleveland’s East Technical High school – with returning to college following serving in World War II.
Dillard indeed returned to Baldwin Wallace – in a way rarely seen, winning NCAA titles in the 120-yard and 220-yard hurdles in 1946 and 1947, becoming the last athlete with such a double-double.
A potential triple-triple for Dillard was cut short when he was ruled ineligible on the eve of the 1948 NCAA meet. His entire 1948 season seemed similarly doomed, when he failed to qualify in the 110 hurdles. Dillard, however, made the team in the 100 meters and won his first ind...

In an exciting race, the British team could not keep up to the strong American team, but still managed to take second place followed closely by the Italian team.
Initially there was dispute over a possible disqualification of the USA for an alleged faulty change-over, but the disqualification did not stand and the Americans were officially proclaimed Olympic champions.

Games of the XIV Olympiad
The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was held in London, United Kingdom from 29 July to 14 August 1948.

Although failing to qualify for the 110m hurdles Harrison Dillard had done enough already to compete in the men's 100m sprint at the London 1948 Olympic Games.
In the race, Dillard won gold in an incredibly tight photo-finish at the line.
Harrison Dillard began hurdling at the age of eight, running in an alley and using the springs from abandoned car seats as barriers. During 1947 and 1948, Dillard won 82 straight races. However, in the final of the 110m hurdles at the U.S. Olympic trials, he lost his stride and failed to finish.
Fortunately, he had already qualified in the 100m dash. At the Olympic Games in London in 1948, Dillard edged teammate Barney Ewell for the gold medal. He won a second gold medal in the 4x100m relay.

Games of the XIV Olympiad
The 1948 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XIV Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was held in London, United Kingdom from 29 July to 14 August 1948.
Following a twelve-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 Games in Berlin. The 1940 Olympic Games had been scheduled for Tokyo, and then for Helsinki; the 1944 Olympic Games had been provisionally planned for London. This was the second occasion that London had hosted the Olympic Games, having previously hosted them in 1908, forty years earlier. The Olympics would again return to London 64 years later in 2012, making London the first city to have hosted the games three times, and the only such city until Paris and Los Angeles host their third games in 2024 and 2028, respectively. The 1948 Olympic Games were the first of two summer Olympic Games held under the IOC presidency of Sigfrid Edström.
The event came to be known as the Austerity Games, because of the difficult economic climate and rationing imposed in the aftermath of World War II. No new venues were built for the games (with events taking place mainly at Empire Stadium and the Empire Pool at Wembley Park), and athletes were housed in existing accommodation at the Wembley area instead of an Olympic Village, as were the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and the subsequent 1952 Games in Helsinki. A record 59 nations were represented by 4,104 athletes, 3,714 men and 390 women, in 19 sport disciplines. Germany and Japan were not invited to participate in the games; the Soviet Union was invited but chose not to send any athletes, sending observers instead to prepare for the 1952 Olympics.
One of the star performers at the Games was Dutch sprinter Fanny Blankers-Koen. Dubbed "The Flying Housewife", the thirty-year-old mother of two won four gold medals in athletics. In the decathlon, American Bob Mathias became the youngest male ever to win an Olympic gold medal at the age of seventeen. The most individual medals were won by Veikko Huhtanen of Finland who took three golds, a silver and a bronze in men's gymnastics. The United States won the most gold and overall medals, having 300 athletes compared to Britain's 404. France fielded the second largest team, with 316 athletes and finished third in the medal standings. The host nation ended up twelfth.

Banks: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Tiny Desk Concerts often require creative and logistical transformations, from electric bands going acoustic to big bands squashing into a tiny space to many players gathering around a single microphone. But the setting is particularly challenging for vocalists, especially those accustomed to heavy production, effects or — in the case of recent guest T-Pain — generous dollops of Auto-Tune.
T-Pain's effects-less set grabbed more attention at the time, given the extent to which digital alterations are expected of him, but this performance by Banks is, in its own way, an even greater high-wire act. Banks' terrific full-length debut, Goddess, is constructed out of layer upon layer of electronics, beats, samples and other means of submerging the singer's voice in swirling accoutrements. With a...

And tell her that she’s holding on to nothing
I hate your ex-girlfriend
Obvious she ain’t found someone yet
Ima some flowers to her ego
Then at least she walks away with something
DOECHII
I hate you bitches I’m misoginistic
Mad at me but I am not his Mrs.
I hate you hate you right now
Karma Karma for the ex bitches
I’m an ex-hoe, x-rated
You want him but I made him
Don’t get put in a body bag
I get fucked up when I’m faded
Put a toe tag on her like a French tip
Wrap a bow around your coffin like it’s Christmas
You a sick hoe you should make a death wish
Scarlett letter then I seal it with a French kiss, muah
BANKS
Your ex-boyfriend can get it
I be with him 24/7
Heard you’re trying to say you’re over him until you let the alcohol set in
Your mouth still where his name lives
I know it’s so frustrating
I stay in his mouth and he can’t keep me out of it like ooh ahh!
I hate your ex-girlfriend
I don’t think that she’s appropriate
Someone help her little basic face

With assistance from keyboardist/guitarist John Anderson and percussionist Derek Taylor, she's not all alone behind the Tiny Desk, but her expressive voice is fully exposed here.
Kicking off her three-song set with "Beggin For Thread," Banks sets the scene in vulnerable, breathily seething fashion before opening the throttle in her choruses. On record, she's placed at the center of lavish productions, each suitable for throbbing remixes and banks of swirling lights. At the Tiny Desk, though, she serves notice that she's a powerful singer in her own right — and that heavy production needn't be the product of necessity. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

And loving is holding back
And I have been in mourning
Never told you that I seen the light
You know I push it cuz I go too far
Something bout what you said in the morning
Never gave me a warning
And while you walkin free
I stay in the middle unaccompanied
Missing you a little, wont you come and see?
I wrote you a melody, cant you see that?
Cuz ooh our loving babe
I know you wont admit it but we’re something babe
All I want to do is get you loved and laid
I wrote you a melody, cant you see that?
Love
Love is holding back
I know I’ve done you wrong
Did I say too much?
Love
Leave me I'm alright
I’ll see you in the morning
And loving is holding back
And I have been in mourning
I remember when you locked us out
We had to climb in through the window, how
Lifted me up, was on the second floor and
I always love that story
And while you talk to me
You don’t think I listen but I do you see
Words are never bitter cuz your voice so sweet
Your voice is like a melody, cant you see that?
Baby don’t be afraid
Not every conversation is a new grenade
All I want to do is get you loved and laid
I wrote you a melody, cant you see that?
Love
Love is holding back
I know I’ve done you wrong
Did I say too much?
Love
Leave me I’m alright
I’ll see you in the morning
And loving is holding back
And I have been in mourning
Anything
I want you more than all time
I want you more than moonlight
I want you more than sunshine
I want you more than water
I want you more than high tides
So don’t you say that our time is up
Our time aint up
Cuz I want you
I want you
I want you
I want you
I want you
Give me love
Give me love
Give me love
Give me love
Give me love, yeah
I want you
I want you
I want you
I want you
I want you
Give me love
Give me love
Give me love
Give me love
Give me love, yeah
(Give me love, yeah)
Love
Love is holding back
I know I’ve done you wrong
Love
Leave me I’m alright
I’ll see you in the morning
And loving is holding back
And I have been in mourning
Love is holding back
(Oh na na na na na na)
(Oh na na na na na na)

Lyrics:
Oh love
Love is holding back
I know I’ve done you wrong
Did I say too much?
Drown my sorrows, called you up
When the truth is tough
Honesty may not be enough
Cuz love is holding back
I know I’ve done you wrong
Love
Leave me I’m alright
I’ll see you in the morning
And loving is holding back
And I have been in mourning
Never told you that I seen the light

Lyrics:
You wanna get to know me,
You memorized the lines of my thighs,
I knew before you told me
You’d get it right.
And you took the dark for granted,
And you love me like you
promised your wife,
It’s almost like you planned it in the daylight.
Ooh I can attain it
Ooh I can attain it
Ooh I can attain it
Ooh I can attain it
Ooh I can attain it
Ooh I can attain it
I like the way you say it,
Tell me the words you told me
that day,
Maybe if I could believe it I could just stay.
Cuz I like the way you do it,
Yeah I like the way you move it baby show me the way,
I like the way you get it on the freeway.
And I wish I could change it,
And we’re always gonna be....
Contaminated.
And oh,
I know what we need,
You start letting me go,
Our love is tainted.
You said they’d be against us,
I say you care too much what they say,
You said “do me a favor gimme some faith.”
Cuz you promised me you’d do it,
You said “baby let me prove
it, look at me in the face...
This is the face of someone who loves you babe.”
And I wish I could change it,
And we’re always gonna be....
Contaminated.
And oh,
I know what we need,
You start letting me go,
Our love is tainted.
You start letting me go.
You start letting me go.
(Stay)
You start letting me go
You start letting me go
(Stay)
And I wish I could change it,
And we’re always gonna be....
Contaminated.
