The Harajuku Girls are four Japanese and Japanese Americanbackup dancers featured in stage shows and music videos for Gwen Stefani during her solo pop/dance-record career. The women also act as an entourage at Stefani's public appearances.
The Harajuku Girls are Maya Chino ("Love"), Jennifer Kita ("Angel"), Rino Nakasone-Razalan ("Music") and Mayuko Kitayama ("Baby"). The name of the group is a reference to Harajuku, a neighborhood of Tokyo. The stage names of the women are derived from Stefani's Love. Angel. Music. Baby., which was the name of her first album as well as her clothing brand.
In 2014 Gwen Stefani announced she would be producing an animated series that was based on the characters Love, Angel, Music and Baby. The series, Kuukuu Harajuku follows the girls, known together as HJ5, as they fight evil and try to pursue their music career.
Love. Angel. Music. Baby. is the debut solo studio album by American singer and songwriter Gwen Stefani, released on November 12, 2004 by Interscope Records. After making guest appearances on songs by other artists during her time with No Doubt, Stefani began recording solo material in early 2003. Originally planned as a small side project for Stefani, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. eventually grew into her first solo album, following No Doubt's hiatus. Stefani co-wrote every song on the album, while collaborating with numerous writers and producers, including Linda Perry, Dallas Austin, The Neptunes, André 3000, and Dr. Dre.
Gwen Renée Stefani (/stəˈfɑːni/; born October 3, 1969) is an American singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and actress. She is the co-founder and lead vocalist of the ska band No Doubt. During the band's hiatus, Stefani embarked on a solo career in 2004 by releasing her debut studio album Love. Angel. Music. Baby. Inspired by pop music of the 1980s, the album was met with both critical and commercial success. It spawned three major worldwide hit singles: "What You Waiting For?," "Rich Girl," and "Hollaback Girl," the latter becoming the first US digital download to sell one million copies. In 2006 Stefani released her second studio album The Sweet Escape. The album produced two successful singles: "Wind It Up" and the album's title track "The Sweet Escape." Including her work with No Doubt, Stefani has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.
As a solo artist, Stefani has won several music awards, including a Grammy Award, a World Music Award, an American Music Award, a Brit Award, and two Billboard Music Awards. In 2003, she debuted her clothing line L.A.M.B. and expanded her collection with the 2005 Harajuku Lovers line, drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and fashion. Stefani performs and makes public appearances with four back-up dancers known as the Harajuku Girls. She was married to British musician Gavin Rossdale from 2002 to 2015 and they have three sons. Billboard magazine ranked Stefani the 54th most successful artist and 37th most successful Hot 100 artist of the 2000–09 decade.VH1 ranked her 13th on their "100 Greatest Women in Music" list in 2012.

Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Era: Appropriation or Appreciation?
Where are Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Girls now? What is the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation? Did Gwen Stefani really say "My God, I’m Japanese and I didn’t know it” to a Filipina American woman? (The answer to that last question: yes)
On January 24th 2023, Michelle Yeoh made history as the first actress of Asian descent to be nominated for Best Actress at the 2023 Oscars (Merle Oberon, India-born actress, was nominated in the 1930s but purposefully hid her heritage). In a world where Hollywood's bamboo ceiling is slowly being dismantled and #StopAAPIHate, let’s look into the importance of Asian representation.
