Parks Canada Guided Tour Inside HMS Terror
Over seven days, under exceptional weather conditions, the interior spaces of the wreck of HMS Terror were scientifically and systematically explored for the first time. Parks Canada’s Underwater Archaeology Team conducted seven ROV dives and explored 20 cabins/compartments on the ship, in search of uncovering a better understanding of the fate of the Franklin expedition. The team obtained clear images of over 90 per cent of the lower deck of the ship, which includes the living quarters of the crew.

The Lost Franklin Expedition
In May of 1845, two vessels of the Royal Navy, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, set out from England. En route to the Canadian Arctic, their mission was to find the Northwest Passage, a trade route from the Atlantic to the Pacific over Canada. But the men were never seen again. This mystery last almost 170 years before the ships were once again found. But these ships were some of the most technologically advanced and well prepared ships for the job. So just what happened? Check it out and find out just what might have happened to the Doomed Franklin Expedition.

The Disturbing Disappearance of the Franklin Expedition
In 1845, two ships entered the dark waters of the frozen and barren Canadian Archipelago, in search of an elusive Northwest Passage. At the large mouth of channel, they were met by two whaling ships, who saw them off shortly afterward. These would be the last individuals to see the ships or the men on board ever again. For over a century, their whereabouts remained a mystery, but slowly over the past few decades, what happened to the ships and the men on board has been discovered, and it is far more horrifying than anyone could have imagined. This is Franklin’s Lost Expedition.

The Wrecks of HMS Erebus and Terror - A Doomed Expedition
Some shipwrecks are famous for their war service. Some are famous for their massive death toll. Yet others are famous as diving spots.
The wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror are none of those. These are famous for the expedition they carried, and its ultimately doomed fate. They are also famous for being some of the very best preserved wooden shipwrecks, especially for their shallow depth.
Erebus can be seen from the air, on a good day.
There is a relative lack of coverage of them, however, so here we are.

The Terror.....What Disaster Struck The Franklin Expedition?
In 1845, two British warships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, with 129 officers and men on board, sailed under the command of Captain Sir John Franklin into the Canadian Arctic. It was generally assumed they were attempting to complete the fabled North-West Passage, connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific, but in actuality their mission was to reach the magnetic north pole and conduct an overwinter series of magnetic observations as part of a global research project.Story told in the Ridley Scott The Terror.

HMS Terror: New video from inside Arctic wreck reveals artifacts frozen in time
Parks Canada has released the first pictures from inside the HMS Terror, one of the two ships in the doomed Franklin Expedition.
The pictures show a vessel amazingly shipshape despite more than 170 years beneath the Arctic seas.
Parks Canada archaeologist Ryan Harris says a robotic camera showed everything from neatly stacked plates to chamberpots to scientific instruments still in their cases.
He says the camera was able to peer into the private quarters of the ships officers.
He says everything is in such good order that he suspects the ship may have been abandoned suddenly with little warning.
The Terror and its sister ship the Erebus set out from England in 1845 in search of the Northwest Passage.
Neither Sir John Franklin nor his 129 were ever heard from again and little trace ...

Neither Sir John Franklin nor his 129 were ever heard from again and little trace of them was found, despite more than 30 expeditions to find them.
But with a blend of Inuit oral history and systematic, high-tech surveys, the Erebus was found in 2014 and the Terror two years later.
