HMS General Wolfe: A Tiny Ship With the LARGEST Gun in Royal Navy Service Ever
HMS General Wolfe was one of eight 12-inch gun monitors built for the Royal Navy in 1915. These ships were constructed using spare 12-inch guns from older pre-dreadnoughts, made possible by the influence of Winston Churchill, the First Lord of the Admiralty, and Admiral Jackie Fisher, the First Sea Lord. Churchill's campaigns, such as the bombardment of the Dardanelles, and Fisher's Baltic Project, necessitated the use of such specialized vessels. Upon completion in 1915, General Wolfe was assigned to various bombardment roles as part of the Dover Patrol, participating in raids on Ostend and Zeebrugge. However, she is best known for her significant modification: the addition of a single 18-inch gun, one of the largest ever fitted to a Royal Navy warship.

I used 1:350 Prinz Eugen and Bismarck(2020ver, second hand unfinished) from the Trumpeter Company. Due to the age of Eugen's production. So many details are missing and wrong. So the Bismarck kit can just make up for this shortcoming. This build also introduced a large number of etched pieces and brass gun barrels.
This re-release video. I optimize montage, text commentary, and music. So that it can have a better viewing experience. For the last almost three months. I have been under tremendous pressure. This has led to a recent decline in video quality. I sincerely hope viewers here will forgive me. In the meantime, I will ensure that all future videos are posted in high quality.

In this in-depth exploration, we delve into the captivating story of HMS Lord Clive, a remarkable warship born out of strategic necessity during World War I. Join us on a historical journey as we uncover the origins of the monitor concept, tracing it back to the Age of Sail and examining its evolution in the Iron and Steam Age.
The script unfolds the fascinating narrative of how Lord Clive, armed with a single 18-inch gun—one of the largest ever fitted to a Royal Navy warship—came into existence. A product of Winston Churchill and Jackie Fisher's ambitious naval initiatives, Lord Clive, alongside her sisters, played diverse roles in the Dover Patrol. From raids on Ostend and Zeebrugge to participating in coastal bombardments, these monitors left an indelible mark on naval warfare.
The video meticulously details the strategic thinking behind the creation of monitors, shedding light on the Admiralty's desire to break the naval stalemate. The script navigates through the construction phase, revealing the ingenious repurposing of older pre-dreadnoughts' 12-inch guns for monitors like Lord Clive. It highlights the adjustments made to gun elevation for enhanced range, showcasing the innovative spirit that characterized these vessels.
Lord Clive's historical significance is accentuated by her involvement in pivotal events, such as the bombardment of the Dardanelles and Fisher's Baltic Project. The video provides a comprehensive overview of Lord Clive's operations with the Dover Patrol, including the raid on Zeebrugge, where she played a crucial role in targeting the locks and industrial works of the German naval base.
The narrative doesn't shy away from the challenges faced by monitors, ranging from limited ammunition stocks to mechanical failures. As the script unfolds, viewers gain insights into the intricacies of naval warfare during World War I and the vital role monitors played in breaking the deadlock.
A unique aspect of Lord Clive's story is her late-war modification with the installation of the formidable 18-inch gun. The script vividly describes this significant alteration, which, unfortunately, occurred towards the war's end, limiting the opportunities for Lord Clive to wield this powerful weapon in action. Post-war, the video explores her participation in gunnery trials and eventual scrapping in 1927.
The overarching theme of the video emphasizes the concept of a small ship with a big gun and a shallow draft—a concept deeply rooted in naval history. The Age of Sail saw the use of bomb vessels for fort bombardments, a precursor to the monitor concept that gained prominence in the Crimean War and the American Civil War.
As viewers engage with the video, they'll gain a profound understanding of the historical context, the strategic thinking behind monitor construction, and the operational challenges faced by vessels like HMS Lord Clive. The script ensures a captivating narrative, weaving together historical facts, strategic insights, and the unique features that defined Lord Clive and her sister monitors.
Join us on this historical voyage as we uncover the untold stories of HMS Lord Clive and the monitors that played a crucial role in shaping naval warfare during World War I. Like and subscribe to our channel for more deep dives into history, and let's embark on this journey together.

The concept of a small ship with a large gun and shallow draft dates back to the age of sail, when bomb vessels were used to bombard forts. These vessels, called bomb ketches, were small, shallow-draft ships equipped with large-bore mortars. In the iron and steam age, similar concepts were revived during the Crimean War and the American Civil War. By November 1914, during the First World War, the Admiralty sought to break the stalemate on the Western Front by using monitors equipped with heavy guns to bombard German positions.
The idea for British monitors began when Charles Schwab, president of Bethlehem Steel Works, offered to sell 14-inch guns to Churchill. This led to the construction of the first British monitors, which were armed with these guns. Encouraged by their rapid construction, Churchill and Fisher planned further monitors using 12-inch guns from obsolete pre-dreadnoughts. Thus, the Lord Clive-class monitors, including General Wolfe, were conceived. The class was armed with modified 12-inch guns capable of firing over 21,000 yards.
These monitors had a draft of 10 feet and were powered by steam reciprocating engines, giving them a top speed of around 10 knots. The displacement was 5,600 tons, and they featured increased armor thickness. The ships were designed with an open upper deck to accommodate observation seaplanes, making them among the first to be designed to carry aircraft. They had a crew of about 200 men and were relatively sparsely equipped.
General Wolfe joined the Dover Patrol in November 1915, and after some initial operations, including attempts to intercept German airships, she participated in bombardments along the Belgian coast. These operations were quite effective, demonstrating the utility of air spotting procedures for correcting artillery fire. The monitors also engaged in anti-destroyer patrols, proving capable of deterring German naval forces.
In December 1917, General Wolfe underwent significant modifications to mount an 18-inch gun originally from the battlecruiser HMS Furious. This gun, weighing 149 tons, required extensive strengthening of the forecastle deck and resulted in increased draft and reduced freeboard. Despite these challenges, the modification was completed, and General Wolfe returned to service in August 1918, unlike her sister ships Lord Clive and Prince Eugene, which did not receive their 18-inch guns.
After the war, General Wolfe was laid up and eventually scrapped in 1923. The development and deployment of these monitors illustrate the Royal Navy's innovative approach to naval warfare, adapting older technologies to meet the strategic demands of World War I.

"1942: Crux of War"
1942 was truly the hinge point of all of WWII, in that during this one year, both the Axis and Allies had the ability to create the long-term conditions for ultimate victory. It represented the point of maximum danger for the Allied alliance. Jonathan Parshall describes the totality of the war situation in the first half of the year from both the Allied and Axis perspectives, so as to create a broader context for understanding the issues in the Pacific.
Speaker bio:
Jonathan Parshall is an independent WWII scholar. He is co-author of Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway, which is widely acclaimed as the definitive account of that crucial battle. He is also co-author of the shortly forthcoming In the Dark: Naval Combat at Night, 1904-1944. Parshall has been widely published in the Naval War College Review, Naval Institute Proceedings, Naval History magazine, WWII magazine, Wartime (the journal of the Australian War Memorial), and others. He established “The Imperial Japanese Navy Homepage” (www.combinedfleet.com) at the dawn of the internet in 1995 and has been its curator since. Parshall has also been a long-time lecturer for the U.S. Naval War College, and a frequent speaker at the National WWII Museum, the National Museum of the Pacific War, the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, the Pritzker Military Museum and Library, and others. He has appeared on the Discovery Channel, History Channel, Smithsonian, the BBC, and most recently on NetFlix’s “Road to Victory” series. He was a technical advisor to the remake of the movie “Midway,” as well as other TV shows. His research for the past twelve years has focused on a forthcoming new history of the year 1942.
