The Invincible-class ships were formally known as armoured cruisers until 1911 when they were redesignated as battlecruisers by an Admiralty order of 24 November 1911. Unofficially a number of designations were used until then, including cruiser-battleship, dreadnought cruiser and battle-cruiser.
Five ships of the Royal Navy have been called HMS Inflexible.
HMSInflexible(1776) was a 180-ton sloop-of-war launched in 1776. HMS Inflexible was disassembled at Quebec City and transported upriver in pieces and reassembled and commissioned 1776 at Saint-Jean on the upper Richelieu River upon a request of General Carleton. It carried 18 12-pounders. It fought at the battle of Battle of Valcour Island in 1776 under the command of John Schank. Her fate is unknown.
Because Inflexible served in the navy's Egyptian campaign (8 March to 8 September 1801), her officers and crew qualified for the clasp "Egypt" to the Naval General Service Medal that the Admiralty authorized in 1850 to all surviving claimants.
In 1807 she was present at the Battle of Copenhagen, joining on 7 August off Helsingor (Captain Joshua Rowley Watson).
Inflexible became a storeship in 1793, and was eventually broken up in 1820.
HMS Inflexible was a Victorian ironclad battleship carrying her main armament in centrally placed turrets. The ship was constructed in the 1870s for the Royal Navy to oppose the perceived growing threat from the Italian Regia Marina in the Mediterranean.
The Italian Navy had started constructing a pair of battleships, Duilio and Dandolo, equipped with four Armstrong 17.7-inch (450mm) guns weighing 100 tons each. These were superior to the armament of any ship in the British Mediterranean Squadron, and Inflexible was designed as a counter to them.
Inflexible mounted larger guns than those of any previous British warship and had the thickest armour ever to be fitted to a Royal Navy ship. Controversially, she was designed so that if her un-armoured ends should be seriously damaged in action and become water-logged, the buoyancy of the armoured centre section of the ship would keep her afloat and upright.
The ship was the first major warship to depend in part for the protection of her buoyancy by a horizontal armoured deck below the water-line rather than armoured sides along the waterline.
HMS Inflexible, a unique ironclad of the Royal Navy, is today's subject.

On display at the Deans Marine open day were two HMS Inflexible models.

On display at the Deans Marine open day were two HMS Inflexible models.
HMS Inflexible as built in 1881 by Ron Kingdon, and HMS Inflexible after refit 1885 built by Deans Marine.
HMS Inflexible 1881
HMS Inflexible is shown as originally commissioned in 1881. It's the usual glass fibre hull, plywood deck and plastic superstructure with resin and white metal fittings where available. It's based on the Deansmarine kit but with new masts and boats, plus crazy torpedo launching gear. The two torpedo boats have spar (outrigger) torpedoes which, I was amazed to find, the Royal Navy was still using long after the Whitehead torpedo was fully operational. Scale is 1:96.
The original ship was laid down in 1876 in response to two new Italian ships which outgunned anything the RN had in the Mediterranean. Her design was finalised after extensive model testing of hull forms. Her main armament was four 80 ton 16 inch rifled muzzle loaders backed up by 6 twenty pounders plus anti-personnel Maxim guns. She also had 2 submerged torpedo tubes for Whitehead torpedoes, an experimental bow mounted torpedo launcher and the inevitable ram. She was the first RN battleship to feature power operated auxilliaries (capstan, winches etc) and an electric lighting system. This ran at 800 volts and, surprisingly, it took a year before anyone was electrocuted. The central part of the ship, covering magazines and machinery spaces, was protected by a 42 inch belt of assorted iron and teak, the thickest armour ever carried in an RN ship. The deck over the top of this was also armoured as were the turrets. The guns were power loaded by rammers built under this deck with loading ports in the base of the superstructure.
She had a top speed of 15 knots under engine power. The sailing rig was provided purely for crew training (the RN still had many sail powered ships so the crew needed to keep their hand in) and played no part in propelling the ship (not enough sail area).
She spent most of her life in the Mediterranean and took part in the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882, receiving two shell hits which caused little damage although the muzzle blast of her own guns did significantly more!
She was sold for scrap in 1903
HMS Inflexible 1885
H.M.S. Inflexible was launched at the Royal Dockyard Portsmouth in 1876 and was armed with 4 x 16” MLR guns in two turrets set en-echelon. Plus 2 x t/tubes and 2 x torpedo carriages, a varied assortment of guns from 4.7” to 20pdrs and many lighter weapons, with 8407 IHP she could make 14.75 knots.
The importance of Inflexible, in design terms, is that she was the supreme example of the citadel ship, designed to take punishment. The central part of the ship is a huge cofferdam, protecting the engines, boilers and magazines, with up to 24 inches of armour making her the most heavily armoured ship even built.
It was universally agreed that she was the ugliest ship afloat, however her size and gun power caught the public's imagination, plus the wrangling between the designer N Barnaby and the chief constructor E Reed made this ship such a sensation as in the Dreadnought debate a quarter of a century later.
She served twice in the Med and as guard ship to Portsmouth in 1901, and was sold for breaking up in 1903.
