Pre-war
Badger served with the First Destroyer Flotilla from 1911 and, with her flotilla, joined the British Grand Fleet in 1914 on the outbreak of the First World War.
The Battle of Heligoland Bight
She was present on 28 August 1914 at the Battle of Heligoland Bight, detached from the First Destroyer Flotilla along with Jackal, Beaver and Sandfly. She shared in the prize money for the engagement.
The Ramming of U-19
On 24 October 1914 she became the first Allied ship to successfully attack a German NavyU-boat when she rammed U-19 off the Dutch coast.U-19 was severely damaged but managed to return to port, was repaired and survived the war.
HMSBadger(1808) was 10-gun Cherokee-classbrig-sloop launched in 1808. She was used as a mooring vessel from 1835, was beached in 1860 and broken up in 1864.
HMSBadger(1854) was a wood screw gunboat launched in 1854. She was to have been named HMS Ranger, but was renamed prior to her launch. She was broken up in 1864.
HMSBadger(1872) was an Ant-class iron screw gunboat launched in 1872 and sold in 1908.
HMS Badger was a Dutch hoy, one of some 19 that the Admiralty purchased for the Royal Navy in 1794 after France's declaration of war in 1793. The intent was to create quickly a class of gun-vessels for operations in coastal and shallow waters. Of all the hoys, she had probably the most distinguished career in that she helped fend off two French attacks on the Îles Saint-Marcouf, and participated in the capture of several French vessels. She was sold in 1802.
Career
Badger was fitted out at Deptford between April and 25 May 1794, with Lieutenant Lewis Mortlock commissioning her in April.
In 1795 Captain Sir Sidney Smith seized the uninhabited Îles Saint-Marcouf, which lie 3.5 nautical miles (6.5km) off Ravenoville on the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy. Smith constructed barracks and gun batteries and manned the islands with 500sailors and Royal Marines, including a large proportion of men unfit for ship-board service, described as "invalids". Smith supported the islands with several gunvessels, including Badger, Hawke, and Shark, and the floating batterySandfly. Lieutenant Charles Papps Price assumed command of Badger in August 1795, with Mortlock moving to command of the newly-captured and commissioned Crachefeu. For administrative purposes, the Navy rated Badger a sloop-of-war, and technically gave Price command of both the Saint-Marcouf islands.
HMS Badger was commissioned on 13 September 1939 as the headquarters of the Flag Officer In Charge, Harwich and was decommissioned on 21 October 1946, although the Operations Room remained as the Emergency Port Control for the Harwich area. The site was Parkeston Quay, now Harwich International Port, and the bunker lies under Hamilton House, currently an occupational health centre, close to the entrance to Harwich International Port, a few miles west of Harwich.
After a short period accommodated in the Station Hotel at Parkeston Quay, the accommodation and administration moved in 1940 to Hamilton House, the former Georgiancustoms house. A bunker was built under Hamilton House, and this opened in 1941 as an underground operations room. Anti-aircraft sea-forts (known as HM Fort Roughs), located 10 miles offshore, were kept supplied from HMS Badger. An alternative deceptive site for Parkeston Quay was sited at East Mersea, but the port area suffered extensive damage from air attacks during the course of World War II

A Model in Paper and Card of HMS Badger c.1760
Ian McLaughlan introduced a series on the building of a model of the Brig-Sloop HMS Badger, allegedly Lord Nelson's first command. This project will use the paper and card printed kit as a template for a hybrid model built out of wood and card. This session covered just the preliminaries of material, basic structure and tools. This talk was given to the Society of Model Shipwrights at its Zoom meeting on Friday 14th April 2023.

Penetanguishene, HMS Badger, boomerang June 5
Today I had the pleasure of delivering instructions to a new property that one of our clients acquired in Penetanguishene. It was a beautiful morning and headed down the street, to the local marina. Walked out of the dock and spotted the 1812 replica gunship HMS Badger. After talking to one of the gentlemen on board, I was granted permission to use the drone to capture this video.
I can not tell you how amazing it is to manage so many rentals in such amazing communities. It opens the door for personal adventure too.
