HIV & AIDS - signs, symptoms, transmission, causes & pathology
What are HIV and AIDS? HIV, or human immunodeficiency virus, is a virus that targets cells in the immune system. Over time, the immune system begins to fail which is called immunodeficiency, and this increases the risk of infections and tumors that a healthy immune system would usually be able to fend off. These complications are referred to as AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Immunology wars: The battle with HIV
HIV pushes the immune system to its limits. Our body's usual antiviral arsenal is coordinated, in part, by immune cells called Helper T cells. But HIV attacks Helper T cells directly, eventually leading to AIDS. In this animation we show the cellular and molecular mechanisms employed on both sides of the fight, and how antiretroviral drugs can help swing the balance in our favour.

Can a twice-a-year shot help end the HIV/AIDS epidemic
HIV infects more than a million people every year worldwide. While decades of research have led to effective treatments and pre-exposure prophylactic (PrEP) drugs that have dramatically reduced the impact of HIV/AIDS epidemic, completely wiping the virus out has remained out of reach. Lenacapavir, a new twice-yearly PrEP injection, may be the solution. Two clinical trials this year showed the drug can offer near complete protection from HIV infection, and the long-lasting effects mean daily pills could be a thing of the past, as long as it is accessible to populations who need it most. Science journalist Jon Cohen, physician-scientist Linda-Gail Bekker, and biochemist Wesley Sundquist describe the history of HIV/AIDS prevention and the unique mechanism that led lenacapavir to be named the ...

HIV pushes the immune system to its limits. Our body's usual antiviral arsenal is coordinated, in part, by immune cells called Helper T cells. But HIV attacks Helper T cells directly, eventually leading to AIDS.

Visit https://brilliant.org/scishow/ to get started learning STEM for free. The first 200 people will get 20% off their annual premium subscription and a 30-day free trial.
As of 2024, exactly seven people have been cured of HIV, most recently the "next Berlin patient." Why aren't we sharing this cure with everyone living with HIV? It's complicated.
