The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also called the cavy or domestic guinea pig, is a species of rodent belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia. Despite their common name, these animals are not in the pig family, nor are they from Guinea. They originated in the Andes, and earlier studies based on biochemistry and hybridization suggested they are domesticated descendants of a closely related species of cavy such as Cavia aperea, C. fulgida, or C. tschudii and, therefore, do not exist naturally in the wild. Recent studies applying molecular markers, in addition to studying the skull and skeletal morphology of current and mummified animals, revealed that the ancestor is most likely Cavia tschudii.
The domestic guinea pig plays an important role in the folk culture of many Indigenous South American groups, especially as a food source, but also in folk medicine and in community religious ceremonies. Since the 1960s, efforts have been made to increase consumption of the animal outside South America.
The Guinea Pig films(ギニーピッグ,Ginī Piggu) are a series of seven controversial Japanesehorror films from the 1980-90s. The series achieved global notoriety mostly for the first two films as the producer needed to prove that nobody was actually hurt or murdered. The producer Hideshi Hino's original concept was to create a film adaptation of his manga work.
The tapes gained notoriety in Japan during the late 1980s and early 1990s when the sixth film of the series (Devil Woman Doctor) was found showcased in the 5,763 videotape collection of Japanese serial killerTsutomu Miyazaki. It was erroneously reported originally as being the second film of the series. It was widely but mistakenly believed that Miyazaki re-enacted a scene from the second film as a part of his crimes. Because of the initial controversy surrounding the series, the series went out of production in Japan. However, the entire series has since been reissued on DVD in the United States, the Netherlands, the UK, and Austria.
Guineai/ˈɡɪni/, officially the Republic of Guinea (French:République de Guinée), is a country in West Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea (French:Guinée française), the modern country is sometimes referred to as Guinea-Conakry in order to distinguish it from other parts of the wider region of the same name, such as Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea. Guinea has a population of 10.5 million and an area of 245,860 square kilometres (94,927sqmi).
Guinea is a republic. The president is directly elected by the people and is head of state and head of government. The unicameral Guinean National Assembly is the legislative body of the country, and its members are also directly elected by the people. The judicial branch is led by the Guinea Supreme Court, the highest and final court of appeal in the country.
Guinea is a predominantly Islamic country, with Muslims representing 85 percent of the population. Guinea's people belong to twenty-four ethnic groups. French, the official language of Guinea, is the main language of communication in schools, in government administration, in the media, and among the country's security forces, but more than twenty-four indigenous languages are also spoken.
Guinea is a traditional name for the region of West Africa that lies along the Gulf of Guinea. It stretches north through the forested tropical regions and ends at the Sahel.
Etymology
The etymology of "Guinea" is uncertain. The English term Guinea comes directly from the Portuguese word Guiné, which emerged in the mid-15th century to refer to the lands inhabited by the Guineus, a generic term for the black African peoples south of the Senegal River (as opposed to the 'tawny' ZenagaBerbers, north of it, whom they called Azenegues or Moors). The term "Guinea" is extensively used in the 1453 chronicle of Gomes Eanes de Zurara.
King John II of Portugal took up the title of Senhor da Guiné (Lord of Guinea) from 1483. It is believed the Portuguese borrowed Guineus from the Berber term Ghinawen (sometimes Arabized as Guinauha or Genewah) meaning "the burnt people" (analogous to the Classical GreekAithiops, "of the burned face"). The Berber terms "aginaw" or "Akal n-Iguinawen" mean "black" or "land of the blacks."
The guinea is a coin of approximately one quarter ounce of gold that was minted in the Kingdom of England and later in the Kingdom of Great Britain and the United Kingdom between 1663 and 1814. It was the first English machine-struck gold coin, originally worth one pound sterling, equal to twenty shillings, but rises in the price of gold relative to silver caused the value of the guinea to increase, at times to as high as thirty shillings. From 1717 to 1816, its value was officially fixed at twenty-one shillings. Then, Great Britain adopted the gold standard and guinea became a colloquial or specialised term.
The name came from the Guinea region in West Africa, where much of the gold used to make the coins originated. Although no longer circulated, the term guinea survives in some circles, notably horse racing, and in the sale of rams to mean an amount of one pound and one shilling (21 shillings) or one pound and five pence in decimalised currency. The name also forms the basis for the Arabic word for the Egyptian poundالجنيهel-Genēh / el-Geni, as a sum of 100 qirsh (one pound) was worth approximately 21 shillings at the end of the 19th century.

In this video, we’ll discuss the top 18 things that guinea pigs hate and you should avoid.
Loud Noises
Loud noises are stressful for your guinea pig because they have much more sensitive hearing than humans. Keep in mind that guinea pigs are prey animals and their sense of fear is a survival tactic.
The sound of fireworks, thunder, loud music, horror movies, loud vehicles, slamming doors, shouting or your vacuum cleaner can be terrifying for your guinea pig.
Having nowhere to hide
Guinea pigs are prey animals and open spaces without a hideout make them feel nervous and vulnerable.
It is important for your little pet to have a safe place to hide when they feel threatened or get spooked. Hideouts are an essential item for your guinea pigs' cage and they will help your pet feel safe and confident.
Cold Temperatures
Guinea pigs hate cold weather. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit, but anything below that is chilly for guinea pigs and they need your help to stay warm.
Heat
Guinea pigs are very vulnerable to heat. They don’t like to be hot, just as much as they don’t like to be cold. In fact, guinea pigs cannot sweat because they have no sweat glands. If it gets hotter than 80 degrees Fahrenheit, your pet could get heatstroke.
It is advisable to keep them in an air conditioned and ventilated room. If they are outside, it’s important to keep them away from direct sunlight.
Being picked up
Guinea pigs hate being picked up. In the wild, only predators pick them up, and after that not much is left. So when you try to grab them, it reminds them of being captured by a predator, which can cause them a lot of stress.
Being lonely
Guinea pigs are very social creatures, and they need constant companionship.
Ideally guinea pigs should be kept in pairs – but if you have a single guinea pig, then make sure the company comes from you. A lonely piggy can suffer from depression, stress and boredom.
Traveling
Guinea pigs hate traveling because they would rather be at home where they feel safe. Being outside of their known environment makes them feel anxious and vulnerable.
Touching their butt
Most guinea pigs don’t like being touched on their rear end. They prefer to be scratched on the nose, under the chin or behind the ears, but try to keep your hands away from their butt. This is especially true with male guinea pigs. Touching their butt is an act of dominance and they don’t like being dominated.
A home full of urine and droppings
Guinea pigs are very clean animals and they appreciate a clean, nice environment.
Damp, stale dusty hay
It’s important to give your guinea pig high quality hay. It needs to smell nice and be dust free. Hay is the most important part of a guinea pig's diet as it provides the fiber necessary to keep their digestive systems healthy.
Guinea pigs should have a daily diet of mostly hay, a smaller amount of fresh vegetables, and a limited number of pellets.
And remember, guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so they require vitamin C-rich foods in their daily diet. Be sure to provide them with vitamin C-rich vegetables and fruit on a daily basis. You can also choose vitamin C-fortified pellets with no seeds or dried fruit added.
Socializing with predators
By nature, dogs and cats are predators, and guinea pigs are prey.
You may think it’s cute to introduce your little pet to cats or dogs, but these are predatory animals and they can be very frightening for your little pet.
Washing them
Guinea pigs are known to be very clean animals who groom themselves often. Therefore, they rarely need to a bath. These animals also have sensitive skin and unnecessary baths may result in dry fur coats and skin.
Guinea pigs are also sensitive to temperature changes, which is another reason why bathing them isn't recommended. Damp fur can keep their little bodies too cold, and that chill can cause upper respiratory infection.
Not enough space to exercise
Although guinea pigs are small, they need plenty of room to exercise, explore tunnels, and play hide and seek. This is because their bodies are built to run and jump around. A pair of guinea pigs need a space that is at least 10.5 square feet.
Being held for too long
You’ll find guinea pigs don’t like being held for more than 15 minutes.
And guinea pigs urinate approximately every 15 minutes, so your piggy may actually be trying to save you the trouble of getting wet.
Living with rabbits
Rabbits and guinea pigs are similar in size and both are prey animals but they should not be kept together in the same hutch. This is because rabbits may injure guinea pigs by kicking them with their powerful back legs.
Dressing them
Some guinea pig owners confuse caring for their pets with treating them like babies.
A common example is an owner who dresses up their pet for a cute photo, or because they may look cute in them.
Keep in mind that guinea pigs are animals and keeping clothes on them will agitate them.

I gave my guinea pig Lumi a bath! Usually guinea pigs clean themselves and don't need bathing but since she's han an upset stomach we had to help her clean.

Thinking of starting out with guinea pigs? Taking on guinea pigs, just like any other pet, is a big decision and a real commitment, especially if you want to be a good owner to them.
This is the morning routine for my five guinea pigs. There's lots of loud guinea pig wheeking so be careful if you're watching this with headphones.
