Perlman began working on the screenplay in 2009. Producer Kevin Feige first publicly mentioned Guardians of the Galaxy as a potential film in 2010 and Marvel Studios announced it was in active development at the San Diego Comic-Con International in July 2012. Gunn was hired to write and direct the film that September. In February 2013, Pratt was hired to play Peter Quill/Star-Lord, and the supporting cast members were subsequently confirmed. Principal photography began in July 2013 at Shepperton Studios, England, with filming continuing in London before wrapping up in October 2013. Post-production was finished on July 7, 2014.
While it serves as a spiritual continuation of the first film's plot, film director James Gunn has stated that it is not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe nor connected to the feature film or its sequel.
Disney XD later renewed the series for a second season.
Plot
The Guardians of the Galaxy (consisting of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket Raccoon and Groot) have obtained an artifact called the Spartaxian CryptoCube that is tied to the Spartax race. Inside is a map leading to the Cosmic Seed, a powerful weapon capable of creating a new universe. The Guardians of the Galaxy must find and destroy the Cosmic Seed before it can wind up in the hands of Thanos, his minions Korath and Nebula, the Ravagers led by Yondu, and anyone else who would abuse its power to threaten the universe.
The team first appeared in the partial reprint title Marvel Super-Heroes with issue #18 (Jan. 1969), written by Arnold Drake and penciled by Gene Colan. They appeared sporadically in several Marvel titles, such as Marvel Two-In-One #4–5 (July–Sept. 1974) and Giant Size Defenders #5 and Defenders #26–29 (July–Nov. 1975). In each case, other heroes such as Captain America, the Thing, and the Defenders aid them in their war against the alien Badoon.
The Guardians were next featured in Marvel Presents #3–12 (Feb. 1976 – Aug. 1977). This was followed by a series of appearances in Thor Annual #6 (1977), The Avengers #167–177 (Jan.–Nov. 1978) and #181 (March 1979), Ms. Marvel #23, Marvel Team-Up #86 (Oct. 1979), and Marvel Two-in-One #61-#63 & #69 (Nov. 1980).

Gunn felt there was a larger awareness of the character during filming compared to the first film, for which Gunn and the cast "just kind of always forgot he was there," with the stand-in actor not having the same presence that Sean Gunn did portraying Rocket. Diesel added that Baby Groot "couldn't be more naive" and felt the Groot seen in the first film was "a college level Groot. He's not fully grown yet, but he's a man... now he has to start all over, so to speak. So we're going to see this goofy, adorable, baby Groot thing running around the screen. Just kinda learning as he goes." Prop master Russell Bobbitt created a 1:1 scale model of the 10-inch (25 cm) Baby Groot for filming, to use "as a lighting reference and sometimes puppeteered against the actors during the filming of scenes." As Groot only communicates with the phrase "I am Groot" in different inflections, Gunn created a "Groot Version" of the script for himself and Diesel, which contains each of Groot's lines in English. Diesel used a higher register of his voice for Baby Groot, which was then pitched up by seven to nine semitones depending on the take, to achieve "the proper nuance". He also delivered the lines slowly to avoid any time stretching issues that would affect the compression. Diesel recorded Groot's voice for sixteen foreign-language releases of the film, up from six in the first film. Sean Gunn provided on-set reference for adolescent Groot in the post-credit sequence
