GUANABARA BAY, A LOOK AT HISTORY | (Rio de Janeiro) - All You Need to Know
A living witness to our history, Guanabara Bay holds relics dating back thousands of years. The discovery of archeological sites near its banks indicates that these waters may have been used by prehistoric people – known as “sambaquis” (“midden”) people. [1] At these sites, the fossils of small marsupial mammals, terrestrial mollusks, birds and reptiles have been identified, as well as chipped stones and ceramics, which tell us a little of this history.
Outras pesquisas Other research carried out by geographers and geologists concluded that, thousands of years ago, the sea level was around 130 meters below its current level. Pollution in Brazil's Guanabara Bay spoils postcard image of Rio • FRANCE 24 English
Located beside the Brazilian city of #RiodeJaneiro, Guanabara Bay is home to rich #biodiversity and represents the livelihood of thousands of fishermen. But over the past few decades, its beauty has been tarnished by daily dumping of sewage, as well as chemical and #plastic waste. According to a study by Rio de Janeiro State University, some 90 tonnes of waste are still dumped into the Bay every day, complicating the lives of the 12 million people who live nearby. Our correspondents Perrine Juan, Louise Raulais, Amin Guidara and Tim Vickery bring us this report to mark #WorldWaterDay.

Rio de Janeiro's Mangrove Defender: the biologist trying to recover Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro has suffered for decades from inefficient sewage treatment, oil spills and mangrove deforestation.
For over thirty years, biologist Mario Moscatelli has been fighting to reverse this process and revitalize the landscape. For denouncing corruption, environmental crimes and government inaction, he faced intimidation and even death threats.
In 2021, the Rio state government transferred responsibility for sewage treatment and sanitation to private companies, opening a new chapter in this long history marked by broken promises.
Through partnerships with these concessionaires, Moscatelli renews hope in the recovery of the bay's degraded mangroves. However, he knows that his efforts as an individual are a drop in the ocean in terms of what needs to be done.

A living witness to our history, Guanabara Bay holds relics dating back thousands of years.
[2] At this time, therefore, on a large part of the currently submerged continental shelf, there used to be areas of restinga (sandy coastal vegetation), cliffs and dunes, which were home to exuberant megafauna such as mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, giant armadillos, and sloths as much as six meters long. [3] The cause of these animals’ disappearance is still uncertain: there may have been a shortage of food arising from the last ice age, or they may not have survived the rising waters of the
Atlantic Ocean throughout the continental shelf’s coastal zone. At any rate, it is known that it was this flooding event, around 12,00 years ago, that gave rise to Guanabara Bay.

Guanabara Bay is the deepest natural ocean bay in the world located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There are four major cities and more than 130 islands which are connected with this magnificent bay. According to size of the bay, which is 412 square kilometers, it is the 2nd largest bay in Brazil. The four cities connected with the Guanabara Bay are Rio de Janeiro and Duque de Caxias on its western shores and Sao Goncalo and Niteroi on its Eastern shores.
The bay has a high volume of ship and boat traffic. The two airports and the major port of Rio de Janeiro are also located on its shores. The two of the largest islands in the bay are connected by a maze of smaller bridges. The bay used to be home to many whales but due to urbanization and industrialization the bay has suffered a lot of damage. There have been three major oil spills in this bay as well, which has also caused severe damage to the ecosystem of the bay. The bay has seen a severe decline in the population of whales and other marine life due to deforestation and pollution of its waters. However, the bay continues to be one of the spectacular tourist attraction sites due to its location, surroundings and the party environment for tourists.
History of Guanabara Bay
Guanabara Bay was discovered by Portuguese in January of 1502; hence it was given a name Ria de Janeiro which means the “Lagoon of January”. Later the name changed to Rio de Janeiro which means January’s river. The city of Rio de Janeiro is named after this bay.
French soldiers invaded the region in 1555 but they could not stay for a much longer period. Although they built a fort in the Serigipe Island near the shore of the bay, but they were expelled by the Portuguese military in 1563. The colonial government built several forts at many points to make it unconquerable from the sea. Islands around the bay served as storehouses, oil reservoirs, drydocks and hospitals for the navy. Due to a controversial dispute with an American treasure hunter, Brazil government forbid the underwater exploration in 1985.
