Grey heron
The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. It feeds mostly on aquatic creatures which it catches after standing stationary beside or in the water or stalking its prey through the shallows.
Standing up to a metre tall, adults weigh from 1 to 2 kg (2.2 to 4.4 lb). They have a white head and neck with a broad black stripe that extends from the eye to the black crest. The body and wings are grey above and the underparts are greyish-white, with some black on the flanks. The long, sharply pointed beak is pinkish-yellow and the legs are brown.
The birds breed colonially in spring in "heronries", usually building their nests high in trees. A clutch of usually three to five bluish-green eggs is laid. Both birds incubate the eggs for a period of about 25 days, and then both feed the chicks, which fledge when seven or eight weeks old. Many juveniles do not survive their first winter, but if they do, they can expect to live for about five years.

Things you need to know about GREY HERONS!
Standing at up to a metre tall and with a wingspan of between 155 and 195 centimetres, the grey heron is almost unmistakable. Adults have an orangey yellow, dagger shaped beak, a dark eye stripe which contrasts with their almost white head and neck, grey wings with dark outer edges and a small crest of feathers protruding from the back of their heads. They also have long spindly legs and hold these and their heads and necks close into their bodies during flight. GREY HERON - The Rat Catcher
Whilst strolling around the park something caught this heron's eye, near the litter bin. It went to take a closer look and, quick as a flash, it caught a rat. Once it got a secure grip of the rat it flew up to the trees to share it with the rest of the family.

The Gray Heron is a large bird, up to 100 cm (39 in) tall and 84–102 cm (33–40 inches) long with a wing span of 155–195 cm (61–77 inches). Body weight can range from 1.02–2.08 kg (2.2–4.6 lb). feathers mostly gray gray up and down grayish-white with some black on the hips. Blue Heron Hunts A Chipmunk
This poor chipmunk is on the ride of his life, but it’s not fun, as a heron holds the cute little rodent with his powerful beak, trying to swallow it, but he’s having a lot of trouble doing so, hence, he repeatedly dips the tiny animal in the water to make it easier to swallow. This cute little chipmunk runs into the wrong bird when this heron grabs it and runs off with it in its mouth.
The chipmunk fights like hell to free itself, and it’s giving the heron a hard time to swallow it, but it does so anyway. This great blue heron is enjoying a day in the park, but what would a day like this be like, without any treats that’s why the heron lunges into the grass to snatch a chipmunk to eat.
Heron Hunts A Frog
This beautiful heron snatches a huge frog from the pond and tries to swallow it whole. It’s a slow process as the heron tries to figure out the best way, can swallow the frog. After a few dips in the water, the big bird gulps the frog. As nature runs its course predators eat prey. Some carnivores will swallow whole whatever they capture.
The Heron captures a bullfrog and does just that. A Heron is slowly and stealthily moving towards its target. Daylight is about to fade away and the heron desperately needs food. Purple herons are skilled hunters, and this heron is no different when it catches a frog. It must kill to survive. This is how nature works.

Grey herons are mostly a waterside bird, found at all inland waterways, along the coast and much to the annoyance of koi and goldfish keepers, theyll frequently attempt to visit garden ponds. With this wetland preference, a lot of their diet is made up of fish and amphibians but they will also hunt away from the water and take small mammals, birds and insects. They catch their larger prey by surprise, stalking it, impaling it and then swallowing it whole.
When it comes to nesting, grey herons will often choose to nest communally in what is known as a heronry. This will usually be in clusters of large trees on islands or close to water and they will sometimes share their nesting areas with other fish eating birds such as great cormorants, spoonbills and egrets. From the age of two years onwards, each adult heron will attempt to find a mate from early spring onwards and once they are successful will begin the construction of a large twig platform nest. Once the nest is complete, each pair will produce between 3 and 5 greeney blue eggs at 2 day intervals. These measure 6cm in length and are incubated by both parents for 27 days from when the first or second is laid. This means that the chick hatch at intervals too and their can be a noticeable size difference between them. Both parents bring food back to the chicks in the nest and they grow rapidly, fledging at 50-55 days old. At this point the young are duller and scruffier looking versions of their parents and are still cared for away from the nest for a further 2 to 4 weeks until they are able to fend for themselves. Each pair will only nest once per year and after nesting they remain mostly solitary, only searching out a new mate the following spring.
There are currently an estimated 13,000 grey heron nests in the UK and 63,000 birds overwintering here. They are also found across most of Europe, Russia, northern Asia parts of Australasia and south Africa. They have a close and similar looking relative in the Americas called a great blue heron. Grey herons in the UK dont migrate and at some point outside of the breeding season they can be seen stood along a waterway or in a field all facing the same direction, and no one really know why they do this although it is thought it might be just for social interaction. They have an average lifespan of around five years but the oldest wild bird on record made it to 23 years of age.

The Gray Heron is a large bird, up to 100 cm (39 in) tall and 84–102 cm (33–40 inches) long with a wing span of 155–195 cm (61–77 inches). Body weight can range from 1.02–2.08 kg (2.2–4.6 lb). feathers mostly gray gray up and down grayish-white with some black on the hips. Adults have a white head and neck with a broad black supercell that ends in a slender, hanging coat of arms and bluish-black stripes on the front of the neck. The scapular feather is elongated, and the feather at the base of the neck is also somewhat elongated. Immature birds lack a dark stripe on the head and are generally darker in appearance than adults, with a gray head and neck and a small, dark gray coat of arms. The pink-yellow beak is long, straight and powerful, it is lighter in color in adults in breeding. The iris is yellow and the legs are brown and very long.
The main call is a loud screaming "fraaank", but various throaty and hoarse sounds are heard in the farm. The male uses an ad call to encourage the female to join him in the nest, and both sexes use different greeting calls after the pairing is established. A loud, sharp “schaah” male is used to drive other birds away from the nest, and a quiet “gogogo” expresses anxiety, as when a predator is nearby or a man passes by a colony. Blue Heron Hunts A Chipmunk
This poor chipmunk is on the ride of his life, but it’s not fun, as a heron holds the cute little rodent with his powerful beak, trying to swallow it, but he’s having a lot of trouble doing so, hence, he repeatedly dips the tiny animal in the water to make it easier to swallow. This cute little chipmunk runs into the wrong bird when this heron grabs it and runs off with it in its mouth.
The chipmunk fights like hell to free itself, and it’s giving the heron a hard time to swallow it, but it does so anyway. This great blue heron is enjoying a day in the park, but what would a day like this be like, without any treats that’s why the heron lunges into the grass to snatch a chipmunk to eat.
Heron Hunts A Frog
This beautiful heron snatches a huge frog from the pond and tries to swallow it whole. It’s a slow process as the heron tries to figure out the best way, can swallow the frog. After a few dips in the water, the big bird gulps the frog. As nature runs its course predators eat prey. Some carnivores will swallow whole whatever they capture.
The Heron captures a bullfrog and does just that. A Heron is slowly and stealthily moving towards its target. Daylight is about to fade away and the heron desperately needs food. Purple herons are skilled hunters, and this heron is no different when it catches a frog. It must kill to survive. This is how nature works.

Standing at up to a metre tall and with a wingspan of between 155 and 195 centimetres, the grey heron is almost unmistakable. Adults have an orangey yellow, dagger shaped beak, a dark eye stripe which contrasts with their almost white head and neck, grey wings with dark outer edges and a small crest of feathers protruding from the back of their heads. They also have long spindly legs and hold these and their heads and necks close into their bodies during flight. For the most part, males and females look the same although the crest of feathers, which are known as Aigrets are slightly longer in breeding condition males.
Grey herons are mostly a waterside bird, found at all inland waterways, along the coast and much to the annoyance of koi and goldfish keepers, theyll frequently attempt to visit garden ponds. With this wetland preference, a lot of their diet is made up of fish and amphibians but they will also hunt away from the water and take small mammals, birds and insects. They catch their larger prey by surprise, stalking it, impaling it and then swallowing it whole.
When it comes to nesting, grey herons will often choose to nest communally in what is known as a heronry. This will usually be in clusters of large trees on islands or close to water and they will sometimes share their nesting areas with other fish eating birds such as great cormorants, spoonbills and egrets. From the age of two years onwards, each adult heron will attempt to find a mate from early spring onwards and once they are successful will begin the construction of a large twig platform nest. Once the nest is complete, each pair will produce between 3 and 5 greeney blue eggs at 2 day intervals. These measure 6cm in length and are incubated by both parents for 27 days from when the first or second is laid. This means that the chick hatch at intervals too and their can be a noticeable size difference between them. Both parents bring food back to the chicks in the nest and they grow rapidly, fledging at 50-55 days old. At this point the young are duller and scruffier looking versions of their parents and are still cared for away from the nest for a further 2 to 4 weeks until they are able to fend for themselves. Each pair will only nest once per year and after nesting they remain mostly solitary, only searching out a new mate the following spring.
There are currently an estimated 13,000 grey heron nests in the UK and 63,000 birds overwintering here. They are also found across most of Europe, Russia, northern Asia parts of Australasia and south Africa. They have a close and similar looking relative in the Americas called a great blue heron. Grey herons in the UK dont migrate and at some point outside of the breeding season they can be seen stood along a waterway or in a field all facing the same direction, and no one really know why they do this although it is thought it might be just for social interaction. They have an average lifespan of around five years but the oldest wild bird on record made it to 23 years of age.

Grey heron
The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. It feeds mostly on aquatic creatures which it catches after standing stationary beside or in the water or stalking its prey through the shallows.
Standing up to a metre tall, adults weigh from 1 to 2 kg (2.2 to 4.4 lb). They have a white head and neck with a broad black stripe that extends from the eye to the black crest. The body and wings are grey above and the underparts are greyish-white, with some black on the flanks. The long, sharply pointed beak is pinkish-yellow and the legs are brown.
The birds breed colonially in spring in "heronries", usually building their nests high in trees. A clutch of usually three to five bluish-green eggs is laid. Both birds incubate the eggs for a period of about 25 days, and then both feed the chicks, which fledge when seven or eight weeks old. Many juveniles do not survive their first winter, but if they do, they can expect to live for about five years.
