The Great Fire of Turku (Finnish:Turun palo and Swedish:Åbo brand) was a conflagration that is still the largest urban fire in the history of Finland and the Nordic countries. The fires started burning on 4 September 1827 in burgher Carl Gustav Hellman’s house on the Aninkaistenmäki hill slightly before 9 p.m. The fire quickly swept through the northern quarter, spread to the southern quarter and jumped the Aura River, setting the Cathedral Quarter on fire before midnight. By the next day, the fire had destroyed 75% of the city. Only 25% of the city was spared, mainly the western and southern portions.
The fire destroyed the historical downtown area of Turku, including Turku Cathedral and the main building of the Imperial Academy of Turku, Akatemiatalo, which were badly damaged. The disaster was made possible by a dry summer preceding the event, a fire-spreading storm rising on the night of the fire, and a lack of extinguishers because a large number of the city's people happened to be visiting a market in Tampere that day. The damage was considerable and was felt for a long period of time in the aftermath of the event. 11,000 people were left homeless, and 27 casualties and hundreds of wounded were recorded.
The fire destroyed about one third of the city and some unburned parts of the city were plundered. Many people believed or assumed that one or more people deliberately started the fire, for a variety of different reasons. British leaders accused revolutionaries acting within the city, and many residents assumed that one side or the other had started it. The fire had long-term effects on the British occupation of the city, which did not end until 1783.
Background
When the American Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, the city of New York was already an important center of business, but had not yet become a sprawling metropolis. It occupied only the lower portion of the island of Manhattan, and had a population of approximately 25,000. Before the war began, the Province of New York was politically divided, with active Patriot organizations and a colonial assembly that was strongly Loyalist. After Lexington and Concord, Patriots seized control of the city, and began arresting and expelling Loyalists.
Turku (Finnish pronunciation:[ˈturku]; Swedish:Åbo[ˈoːbʊ]) is a city on the southwest coast of Finland at the mouth of the Aura River, in the region of Southwest Finland. Turku, as a town, was settled during the 13th century and founded most likely at the end of the 13th century, making it the oldest city in Finland. It quickly became the most important city in Finland, a status it retained for hundreds of years. After Finland became part of the Russian Empire (1809) and the capital of the Grand Duchy of Finland was moved to Helsinki (1812), Turku continued to be the most populous city in Finland until the end of the 1840s, and it remains a regional capital and an important business and cultural center.
Because of its long history, it has been the site of many important events, and has extensively influenced Finnish history. Along with Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia, Turku was designated the European Capital of Culture for 2011. In 1996, it was declared the official Christmas City of Finland.
The Great Fire of Turku as a Media Catastrophe, 1827
“It was on Tuesday, the 23d of August (4th of September), at nine o’clock in the evening, that the dreadful fire broke out at Abo, in the house of Mr Hellman.” These words, copied from the St. Petersburg Journal, were printed by The Times in London on 30 October 1827. The city of Turku in Finland, known also as Åbo in Swedish, had been almost completely destroyed in the devastating conflagration that started on 4 September 1827. This video shows how the news on the catastrophe spread during the subsequent weeks, between 4 September and 1 October.
The video is based on newspaper collections at the National Libraries of Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Norway, Poland and Sweden, as well as Europeana collection and British Library Newspapers.
