Great Barrier Island
A group of buddies with a simple plan: ditch the city lights of Auckland, load sea kayaks with a ton of food and beer, and cross the Hauraki Gulf to explore the coastline of Aotea.
Also known as Great Barrier Island, Aotea is New Zealand’s fourth-largest landmass. And with only 1,000 year-round residents, this 245 square-kilometer island was the perfect choice for an off-grid adventure. For New Zealand kayaker Mike Dawson and his crew of fellow Kiwis, this backyard adventure delivered it all: wildlife encounters, epic hiking, secluded beach campsites and meals cooked over an open fire.

One of the Coolest Cruising Destinations I have Visited: Smokehouse Bay on Great Barrier Island
Episode 342 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode I have a lovely slow sail across Port Fitzroy to the legendary Smokehouse Bay. I had heard a lot of hype about this spot and I have to say it far exceeded expectations. Where else can you sail up to an almost empty anchorage, drop the hook, head ashore and start a fire for a hot water bath, smoke fish and make a pizza in the pizza oven? Oh Yeah you can also do you your washing in the basins near the pizza oven.
This was a really remarkable place and easily one of the coolest cruising destinations I have ever visited.

Locals on Aotea (Great Barrier Island) are increasingly living off the land to survive.
The cost of living crisis and rising freight prices means growing and hunting your own food and being self-sufficient is an everyday necessity.
Kaitiaki o Aotea Rodney Ngawaka says this means whānau Māori on the off-the-grid island are learning from and living as their tūpuna did before colonisation.
