North Dakota (pronunciation: i/ˌnɔːrθdəˈkoʊtə/; locally[ˌno̞ɹθ dəˈko̞ɾə]) is the 39th state of the United States, having been admitted to the union on November 2, 1889.
North Dakota has weathered the Great Recession of the early 21st century with a boom in natural resources, particularly a boom in oil extraction from the Bakken formation, which lies beneath the northwestern part of the state. The development has driven strong job and population growth, and low unemployment.
Geography
North Dakota is located in the U.S. region known as the Great Plains. The state shares the Red River of the North with Minnesota on the east; South Dakota is to the south, Montana is to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are north. North Dakota is situated near the middle of North America with a stone marker in Rugby, North Dakota marking the "Geographic Center of the North American Continent". With an area of 70,762 square miles (183,273km2), North Dakota is the 19th largest state.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,666 square miles (4,310km2), of which 1,659 square miles (4,300km2) is land and 6.8 square miles (18km2) (0.4%) is water.Lake Tschida, a U.S. Bureau of Reclamationreservoir and recreation area on the Heart River, is the county's largest body of water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,841 people, 1,195 households, and 800 families residing in the county. The population density was 2 people per square mile (1/km²). There were 1,722 housing units at an average density of 1 per squaremile (0/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.90% White, 1.72% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.35% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. 0.60% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 73.7% were of German, 7.9% Norwegian and 5.2% American ancestry.
Grant County is included in the 8 county definition of Eastern Oregon.
History
Grant County was established on October 14, 1864, from parts of old Wasco and old Umatilla counties. Prior to its creation, cases brought to court were tried in The Dalles, county seat of the vast Wasco County. The great distance to The Dalles made law enforcement a difficult problem, and imposed a heavy burden on citizens who had a need to transact business at the courthouse. In 1889, more than half of the southern part of the original Grant County was taken to form Harney County. Also in 1899, a small part of northwestern Grant County was taken (along with parts of Crook and Gilliam counties) to form Wheeler County.
Native American cultures in the area included the Interior Salish, Wenatchi, Okanagan. The first white settlers began to arrive in the mid-to-late-19th century, primarily with the goal of raising livestock. One government official described the area in 1879 as, "…a desolation where even the most hopeful can find nothing in its future prospects to cheer."
When railroads arrived they also brought new settlers, and the economy began a shift from ranching to dryland farming. This transition required the people to have ready access to water, and irrigation became a necessity. The first large-scale irrigation attempts began in 1898, but it would be years before real success.

[Verse 1:] When I see your eyes. They show me everything. I ever needed to know. The only place I need to go. And when we are together. My whole world disappears. Along with all our fears. We are invincible. [Chorus:] Maybe we should get away. be ourselves, just the two of us. In your car, we'll drive til the road runs out. We can run forever. [Verse 2:] Hey and when we get there. We can find a cheap hotel. Where we can hide from the world. We can pretend that we're all alone. And no one else exists. the streets are ours tonight are ours tonight and no ones here to tell us what to do or tell us what we're not [Chorus:] Maybe we should get away. be ourselves, just the two of us. In your car we'll drive til the road runs out. We can run forever. Maybe we should get away. be ourselves, just the two of us. In your car we'll drive til the road runs out. We can run forever. [Bridge:] And we can be. Who we want to be. So everyone can see. Exactly what we mean. [Chorus:] Maybe we should get away. be ourselves, just the two of us. In your car we'll drive til the road runs out. We can run forever. Maybe we should get away. be ourselves, just the two of us. In your car we'll drive til the road runs out.
