Andrew James "Andy" Summers (born 31 December 1942) is an English musician, born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. Best known as the guitarist for the rock band The Police, he has also recorded twelve solo albums, collaborated with many other artists, toured extensively under his own name, published several books, and composed several film scores.
During Summers' childhood, his family moved to Bournemouth in Dorset, England. After several years of piano lessons, he took up the guitar at the age of thirteen. By age sixteen he was playing in local clubs and by nineteen he had moved to London with his friend Zoot Money to form Zoot Money's Big Roll Band.
Summers' professional career began in the mid-1960s in London as the guitarist for the British rhythm and blues band Zoot Money's Big Roll Band, which eventually came under the influence of the spreading psychedelic scene and evolved into the acid rock group Dantalian's Chariot.
After the demise of Dantalion's Chariot, Summers joined The Soft Machine for a period of three months and toured the United States. For a brief time in 1968, he was a member of The Animals, then known as Eric Burdon and the Animals, with whom he recorded one album, Love Is. The album features a recording of Traffic's "Coloured Rain", which includes a guitar solo by Summers. The LP also included a reworked version of Dantalion's Chariot's sole single "Madman Running Through the Fields".

Most well known as the guitarist for the Police, many may not be familiar with Andy's amazing solo material in the world of ambient new age-y fusion music. This album is my absolute favorite solo CD by Andy Summers, his debut on Private Music, with evocative tracks like "Emperor's Last Straw" and "Red Balloon" taking me instantly back to 1988 when I first heard them...definitely my top picks from this one. I always take this album on my mp3 player when I go on my isolated backpacking trips through the Nantahala National Forest, provides nice ambience. Tracklist: 1. Red Balloon 0:00 2. Records and was the first of four albums to be recorded with lead singer Sammy Hagar, who replaced David Lee Roth. The album was named after Eddie Van Halen's home studio, 5150, in turn named after a California law enforcement term for a mentally disturbed person (a reference to Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code). The album hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, surpassing the band's previous album, 1984, which had peaked at number 2 behind Michael Jackson's Thriller album, on which Eddie made a guest appearance. Creep in through my window
Dance upon the wall
Come in here beside me
Climb into my soul
Take me to the water,
Down into the cool
Everlasting memory
Everlasting pool
Aching in the darkness
Burning in the sun
Calling from the water
This life has just begun
Strength of blood and muscle
Life of wood and bone
Searching for a fire
Searching for a home...
Home...home...home...
Crouching in the darkness
Hiding in the stone
Trembling in the darkness
This man is not alone
Hit me by the memory
Hurt me to the bone
Make my fists with starlight
Carry me back home...
Home...
